CBS Evening News is asking viewers to vote on stories for next week’s “Assignment America” and Best Friends Sanctuary has sent out the following alert. It suggests that votes must be cast by noon Eastern Time on Sunday, however, the CBS website says 12am Sunday, which more commonly refers to midnight, though a website search prove much confusion about that. Let’s all vote on Saturday night to be safe!

And please forward this immediately to all your animal loving friends.

The Best Friends alert provides the link to the web information. The actual voting page can be found here OR at tinyurl.com/le345.

Today’s papers include two stories on welfare issues for animals raised for food. The Friday, Septemer 29, Des Moines Register covers a ruling that will require animals being trucked to slaughter to be unloaded every 28 hours. The Washington Post covers a call for labels telling consumers that their eggs come from caged hens. The articles are perhaps most useful in their ability to provide some public education regarding the horrendous treatment of animals used for food.

The Des Moines Register article is headed, “USDA says rule on livestock stops applies to trucks. The regulation, originally used for rail shipments, requires most animals to be unloaded every 28 hours.”

The word “most” is included since as the article tells us, “Chickens and turkeys won’t get any relief from the rule.” Chickens and turkeys are exempt from even that minimal protection, as they are from the federal Humane Slaughter Act.

The article tells us:

“It has become common practice in the pork industry, in particular, for trucking companies to assign two drivers to each load to avoid having to stop en route, these officials say.” And we learn that “more than a million pigs were shipped from North Carolina to Iowa in 2001, the latest year for which USDA has records on state-to-state shipments. Another 1.7 million originated in Canada.”

The story does not mention that the trucks making those lengthy journeys have no protection from the elements. There is no airconditioning in the summer. In the winter, some animals arrive dead, while others, less fortunate, arrive alive but frozen to the truck and have to be ripped out of it.

Press Conference Held to Reject Repeal of Humane Law

Earlier this week, Alderman Joe Moore, who was responsible for initiating the Chicago ordinance to ban the sale of foie gras within city limits, was joined by Farm Sanctuary, The Humane Society of the U.S., animal experts, religious leaders and legal scholars to express strong support for the city’s enacted ban on this cruel product. Many media reporters attended this press conference at Chicago’s City Hall to hear statements calling upon the Chicago City Council to stand by its principled vote against animal cruelty, and to reject any attempt to repeal this humane law. Lamb Rescued from “Educational” Farm Safe from Slaughter

In late September 2006, a bright-eyed, fuzzy little lamb was brought to Farm Sanctuary to begin a new life full of peace and freedom. Chico, now happy, safe and surrounded by caregivers here at our New York Shelter, was once slated for the slaughterhouse to make money for continuing programs at the “educational” farm camp where he was born. He was rescued by two loving girls who met him at the camp and knew he was meant to live a long, bountiful life. Were it not for these diligent girls’ gigantic hearts and dedication to saving Chico, his life would have ended when it had barely even begun. Click here to read more.

A Dangerously Misleading Label – Don’t Let It Lead to Lost First Amendment Rights!

Influential animal exploiters are pushing to enact a law that would punish those who protect animals! The increasing successes of animal protection advocates who have exposed institutionalized animal cruelty in various industries has lead to widespread paranoia and erroneous labeling of animal advocates as “terrorists.” This is all too apparent with the name and hidden agenda of the Federal “Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act” (AETA). A U.S. House of Representatives vote is planned for Friday, September 29th, so PLEASE ACT NOW to stop this bill in its tracks!

Stay Warm this Fall with Compassion

The beauty of autumn makes it one of our favorite seasons. However, it also signifies additional misery for our farm animal friends. Millions of animals used for clothing endure horrific pain: birds are painfully plucked for their down feathers, sheep are shorn for wool, and calves are slaughtered for their leather hides. Unfortunately, these are but a few of the animals exploited for their fibers and skins. Learn how you can stay warm this fall in cruelty-free fashion.

Farm Sanctuary Receives Fifth Consecutive Four-Star Charity Rating

For the fifth consecutive year, Farm Sanctuary has been awarded a four-star rating by Charity Navigator, America’s premier charity evaluator. The four-star rating is the highest rating given, and indicates excellence in fiscal responsibility and efficacy. Only 12 percent of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least two consecutive four-star ratings. To view our ratings page, click here. Thank you for all you do to make Farm Sanctuary the strongest organization it can be for the animals!

About Farm Sanctuary

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. Add Your Voice and Oppose the Sell-Off of Our Public Lands

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Via Zion-Mojave Wilderness.org:

Let Your Voice be Heard!

Join Others in Telling Congress Not to Sell Off Public Lands for Private Gain

Congress is about to head home for a 6-week recess so members can campaign for the midterm elections.

When they return to Washington in mid-November — regardless of how the election turns out — it is highly likely that attempts will be made to push through the bill to sell off our public lands in Utah before the lame duck session expires and Congress adjourns for good.

This terrible bill could even be attached as a “rider” to spending bills — meaning Congress could sell of our public lands without even a vote on the bill itself.

To prevent that, we need to demonstrate to each member of Congress that their constituents care about what happens to America’s public lands in Utah.

The easiest way to tell your representatives that you don’t want this sell-off to sneak through is to add your voice to the online petition opposing this bill.

We are excited to let you know that all of your help making phone calls, writing letters, and sending emails over the past several months has resulted in great news — for companion animals in California, and all across the U.S.

In California, Governor Schwarzenegger has just signed two important pieces of legislation into law. We hope this will pave the way for other states across the U.S. to take these important steps.

Earthjustice: Stop the “Bad Samaritan” bill: No free ride for toxic polluters

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Via Earthjustice:

Stop the “Bad Samaritan” bill: No free ride for toxic polluters

The National Mining Association and other supporters may call it the “Good Samaritan Bill,” but the Cleanup of Inactive Mines and Abandoned Mines Act (S. 1848) has nothing good about it. If passed, this legislation would allow mining companies and others to conduct remediation activities at abandoned and inactive hardrock mining sites without taking basic steps to meet water quality and other environmental standards.

No true “Good Samaritan” would want to let mining companies or anyone else spread pollution that hurts people; and why would a “Good Samaritan” want to bypass critical environmental protections? But that is just what this misleading bill would do. And by waiving environmental laws like the Clean Water Act and Superfund, S. 1848 could allow pollution at these toxic sites to get even worse.

This dangerous bill has already been voted out of the Senate Environment Committee, and may get on a fast track to pass the Senate before the end of this session of Congress. Please ask your senators to oppose S. 1848 today!
