Subject: LETTER/ End Stu’s Nightmare Inside LAAS
Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Relief List
permission to crosspost
This alert is non-disaster related and was posted to Kinship Circle Primary. Since many on our Disaster Relief List work in hands-on rescue, we felt you might want to write/call on behalf of Stu. If not, simply delete this alert.
Stu, a wounded dog who bit (minor) a babysitter who unwisely approached him last year, is set to be euthanized — possibly next week — even though a hearing ruled him non-dangerous. Please write on behalf of Stu and thousands of animals killed at L.A. Dept. of Animal Services shelters every week.

Dear LAAS Officials, Mayor Villaraigosa and Staff:
Impound #A455017 has a name. It’s Stu. And as this plain black dog’s ordeal gains international publicity, his life becomes a symbol for others lost in a mismanaged city shelter system.
A year ago, Stu inflicted a minor bite and some scratches upon his babysitter, who then filed a complaint with Los Angeles Animal Control and attempted to sue Stu’s guardian. I understand the L.A. Animal Services Commission held a subsequent hearing, after which the Commission Hearing Examiner determined the dog posed no significant threat.
But former LAAS General Manager, Guerdon Stuckey, overruled the examiner’s judgment, classified Stu as dangerous, and ordered his euthanasia. For the last year, Stu has languished in a cage, his execution stayed after his guardian filed a lawsuit to save him.
Now, current LAAS General Manager Ed Boks intends to destroy Stu, possibly next week. I call upon your compassion and prudence. Please reexamine pertinent details from hearing transcripts:
* The examiner classified Stu as non-dangerous.
* The alleged bite victim possessed no medical documents depicting intensity of the incident. Photos showed a minor bite and some scratches.
* The alleged victim said Stu pulled her the width of a room three times, but the examiner indicated her story was fabricated.
* Prior to the bite episode, the dog had been injured during a clash with another dog in the same household. Stu’s ear was ripped in the fray.
* Stu’s ear ached and he retaliated defensively as the woman moved within reach of him.
* Stu is a first-time offender. With his ear throbbing, he reverted to self-protection instinct when the woman — aware of the risk in approaching a wounded animal — moved toward him anyway.
Please let Stu go home. The Commission’s initial evaluation did not show a pattern of aggression. Return Stu to the comfort of familiar surroundings, perhaps with stipulations such as muzzling in public or behavioral training. Stu and his guardian do not need to suffer any longer.
The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services cannot afford another black mark on its record. Within the six-shelter system, known to kill animals prematurely and not uphold its own euthanasia rules, thousands of animals die each week. If current management lacks humane, progressive vision, please recruit new employees.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration,
