Subject: DawnWatch: Tammy Grimes arrested for saving dog — petition, DA info, and news stories 9/16/06

There has been much local media in Pennsylvania about the arrest of Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, for saving the life of a chained dog so weak he could not stand.

Lancaster’s Intelligencer Journal carried the story on the Friday, September 15, front page, headed, “She’s not afraid of a dog fight; Woman charged in hound flap to speak here.”

It opens:

“The dog appeared to be dead Monday morning, passersby said.

“Chained outside a residence, the shepherd mix lying on his side in dirt and puddles had been unable to stand for several days, they said.

“A neighbor repeatedly called a Central Pennsylvania Humane Society officer charged with investigating animal abuse and neglect in the Altoona area. No one responded, the neighbor said.

“So the neighbor called Tammy Grimes. Then another person called Grimes about the same dog. That’s when Grimes took action, video camera in tow.

“By early Monday evening, the dog Grimes dubbed Doogie was resting inside a safe home after a $170 visit to a vet. After taking painkillers, vitamins, a hearty meal and water, he was even walking a little.

“That night, not unexpectedly, police came for Grimes.”

We learn that she was charged with theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief and trespassing. She was released on $50,000 unsecured bail. And she is a featured speaker, today, Saturday, at the annual Puppy Mill Awareness Day at Intercourse Community Park.

Pennsylvania’s state college Centre Daily Times has more on the story on page 5 of the Saturday, September 16 edition. The article is headed “Dog-napper ‘willing to go to jail’; Activist takes animal to vet, refuses to tell its whereabouts.”

It opens:

“A Tyrone woman and founder of “Dogs Deserve Better” vows she will go to jail before she gives up Doogie, the dog she is accused of stealing from an East Freedom family.

“Tammy Grimes insists the mixed breed dog was being treated cruelly, chained up outdoors while suffering from medical problems brought on by neglect.

“So she dog-napped the canine she called Doogie and won’t reveal his whereabouts. Grimes said she will not give the dog back, even if ordered to do so by a judge at a preliminary hearing Wednesday.”

We learn, “Her preliminary hearing on the charges is set for 1 p.m. before District Judge Craig Ormsby in Roaring Spring. Before her court appearance, a support rally will be held at 11 a.m. at the Blair County Courthouse.”

And, “Grimes said Utah-based Best Friends is offering to take Doogie into their animal sanctuary, an offer Grimes hopes will settle the dispute.” (Check out www.BestFriends.org to learn more about that wonderful organization.)

There is also a request that you contact the DA and ask him to drop all charges against Grimes, and file charges for cruelty against the Arnolds based on video, photos, eye witness accounts, and veterinary witness.
