- URGENT -
House to Vote on “Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act” TOMORROW – FRIDAY, SEPT. 29

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) is a bill that, if passed, could make it a crime to cause any business classified as an “animal enterprise” (e.g., factory farms, fur farms, vivisection labs, rodeos and circuses) to suffer a profit loss — even if the company’s financial decline is caused by peaceful protests.

Outlawing non-violent activist tactics that don’t physically hurt anyone and defining them as “terrorism” is a completely unacceptable violation of our constitutionally-granted First Amendment rights to freedom of speech as Americans. We must take action NOW to defend our right to protest cruelty against animals — before it is too late!

Industry groups are pushing AETA through quickly and with little public scrutiny (fast-tracking it like they did the Patriot Act: first through the House of Representatives, then through the Senate) before the current Congressional session ends. In fact, the House is scheduled to vote on this bill (HR 4239) TOMORROW, Friday, September 29th!

We need to flood the lines with calls in opposition to AETA now! This is the most important call yet because it affects our ability to help ALL animals!

Call your Representative and Senators TODAY and urge them to protect our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech by opposing the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.

Newsday ran an article about Assemblymember Michael Panter’s plan to introduce a bill that would ban the distribution and sale of foie gras throughout the state of New Jersey. Besides a great number of restaurants that serve the “delicacy,” New Jersey is home to a major supplier of foie gras, D’Artagnan Inc.

Please send letters to the editor to Letters [at] newsday.com.

Environmental Defense: Support Energy Security Resolution

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Via Environmental Defense:

Support Energy Security Resolution

America currently imports nearly 60% of the oil we use. At current rates of growth, America’s oil demand will rise more than 50% in the next 20 years. Much of this demand will likely be met by importing more oil.

America already possesses the technology to dramatically reduce our dependence on imported oil. We need political leadership to tackle this important issue.

Help reduce our foreign oil dependence! Ask your Representative to co-sponsor House Resolution 971, an energy security bill calling on Congress to pass legislation to slow, stop and ultimately reverse the growth of our dependence on imported oil.

Celebrity Chef Promotes Foie Gras Cruelty!

Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse continues to promote foie gras (pronounced ‘fwah grah’), www.nofoiegras.org, in his recipes, in his restaurants and on his television shows. In fact, The Food Network’s “The Essence of Emeril” show, which aired on September 26, 2006, was devoted entirely to foie gras!

What You Can Do!

DawnWatch: Ben & Jerry’s commits to egg producer changes — NY Times and others — 9/27/06

Subject: DawnWatch: Ben & Jerry’s commits to egg producer changes — NY Times and others — 9/27/06

Ben & Jerry’s has committed itself to abandoning its current egg supplier and phasing in the use of eggs that come from hens housed under higher welfare standards. That story is in a few papers today, Wednesday, September 27. Associated Press coverage means it is likely to be in more tomorrow.

The New York Times carries the story as part of Marian Burros’s “Eating Well Notebook” on the front page of the Dining Section (F1). Burros heads the piece, “Et Tu, Ben and Jerry?” and writes:

“First Chicago banned the sale of foie gras. Then Whole Foods stopped selling live lobster. Now Ben and Jerry’s has pledged not to use eggs that come from a farm that the Humane Society of the United States has accused of being cruel to its laying hens. Animal rights activists are on a roll. While they pursue high-profile cases they are also signing up farmers who, in exchange for taking a pledge to treat their animals humanely, are permitted to label their products ‘Certified Humane. In its latest efforts on behalf of animals, the Humane Society has shamed Ben and Jerry’s into changing to eggs from cage-free hens by calling the company hypocritical for criticizing ‘giant industrial farming operations’ on its Web site.”

Satya Magazine Presents: The Humane Meat Discussion

Satya invites you to join us in a public dialogue. Satya’s September and October issues explore the growing interest in “humane,” “organic,” “cage-free” and “compassionate” animal products, by both consumers and animal advocacy groups. This forum will address questions like, what do these trends mean for the animals, vegan activism and meat consumption? Satya staff and some of the contributors will be in attendance.

We strongly encourage all attendees to read both issues before this discussion. Come ready to share your thoughts, ask questions, debate and participate.

7-9 pm, Jivamukti Yoga Studio Café, 841 Broadway (between 13 & 14 Streets), 2nd floor, Manhattan, NYC. Free.

Info and RSVP: 718-832-9558; feedback [at] satyamag.com.

* Special Offer: Any new-to-Jivamukti-attendees of this event will also receive a free yoga lesson!
