Public Campaign Action Fund: Addicted to Big Oil’s Big Money

Monday, September 18th, 2006

Via Public Campaign Action Fund:

Addicted to Big Oil’s Big Money

President Bush declared that America is “addicted” to oil, but few steps have been made to address the problem by Congress. Record high gas prices topped $3.00 in the last year, oil companies raked in huge profits, and their executives’ pay soared to extremes. Meanwhile, experts say that our dependence on oil puts us at risk around the world, damages our environment and public health, and hurts our economy.

Despite widespread acceptance that we have to change our ways, why has Congress continued to reward the oil companies, like giving them $3.8 billion in tax breaks and subsidies in last year’s energy bill?

Follow the money.

The oil and gas industry has poured $194.4 million into the campaigns of our federal elected officials (75% to Republicans, 25% to Democrats) since 1989, and wields enormous influence in Washington, D.C. If America is to kick the oil habit, we’ll have to reduce the role of private money in politics by passing Clean Elections-style public financing.

Congratulations to Marsha Alexander, whose letter to the Indianapolis Star on elephants in zoos was published.

The El Paso Times published an article about the El Paso City Council’s decision to put off voting on sending the elephants at the El Paso Zoo to a sanctuary in the wake of the recent alleged beating of an elephant at the Zoo by a zoo employee.

Read “City delays action on elephants till Dec. 4” online.

Please write a letter to the editor of El Paso Times to urge readers to support sending Savannah and Juno to a sanctuary. Implore the City Council to stop delaying and do the right thing. Send letters to the El Paso Times via an online form.

American Rivers: A Dam Runs Through It?

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Via American Rivers:

A Dam Runs Through It?

After a year of delays, the U.S. Forest Service is set to decide the fate of the Mike Horse Dam, a monstrosity built to contain metallic mining waste, perched precariously atop the headwaters of Montana’s famous river. Located about 100 miles east of Missoula, this glorified pile of zinc, copper and silver mine tailings threatens to pollute the river with more than two million cubic yards of toxic sediment.

In July 2005, your comments to the Forest Service bolstered local efforts to remove this mountain of noxious mine tailings — and now your help is needed to close the deal. Tell the Forest Service that protecting the Blackfoot River requires removing the Mike Horse Dam.

The comment deadline is Monday, September 18, so please act today!

The Wilderness Society: Protect Wild Utah

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Via The Wilderness Society:

Protect Wild Utah

The wild lands of the Zion-Mojave region of southwestern Utah feature stunning and dramatic landscapes of sandstone cliffs and canyons, Joshua tree forests, and more. These lands, many of them wilderness quality, are located in one of the fastest growing counties in the U.S. and are increasingly threatened by sprawl and off-road vehicle use.

Under a wilderness bill being proposed by Utah Sen. Bob Bennett and Rep. Jim Matheson, less than a third of these wild areas will win long-term protection and up to 40 square miles of the region could be sold off to private developers. This bill is moving forward with inadequate public input.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Let your Representative and Senators know that you oppose this bill.

Victory for Horses! Horse Slaughter Ban Passes U.S. House of Representatives

Now it’s time for the Senate to act and pass S. 1915 (identical to H. 503). Your calls and letters are now needed to your two U.S. Senators to ensure that this important bill achieves victory there as well, and America’s horses are finally afforded the protection they deserve.

Tell Paris Hilton No! Help Free Exploited Wildlife!

Alleged singer and celebutante Paris Hilton, desperate for attention – any attention – has recently inflicted her lifestyle on a succession of exotic pets as a publicity ploy. The latest victim of Paris’s affections is a captive “pet” kinkajou cloyingly named “Baby Luv,” which has appeared in public draped across Paris as if it were the latest fashion trend. [...]

Fortunately, the state of California recognizes the serious threats that the international wildlife trade poses, both to wild animals from other countries and to U.S. species when these animals are imported and then abandoned or released. Due to these threats, it is illegal to import or possess kinkajous or other wild animals in California without a valid permit.

But unfortunately, Paris Hilton does not seem to understand or share these serious concerns – and it’s unlikely she will unless she knows a growing number of people think her “fashion statements” are barbaric and tragically unhip. Please send a letter today to demand that Paris Hilton stop collecting and exploiting exotic wildlife and that she immediately free Baby Luv, the kinkajou!

Attend Puppy Mill Awareness Day – Sat. 9/16

Approximately 500,000 puppies per year are bred in puppy mills across the country, facilities known for their filthy, overcrowded conditions and the unhealthy animals they produce. Only half of the dogs bred at puppy mills make it to the pet store; the other half die from the mill’s squalid conditions, hypothermia, starvation, or other horrors of transport.

Puppy Mill Awareness Day 2006 is an event aimed at educating consumers and mobilizing activists to combat the horrors of ‘puppy mills.’

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania — known as “The Puppy Mill Capital of the East Coast” — has the largest concentration of dog breeders for any county in the United States. Lancaster is commonly recognized for its large Amish population. Although the Amish are known for their very traditional, religious lifestyle, they also own and operate many of the worst puppy mills in Lancaster. Their involvement with these mills brings them millions of dollars each year.

This year’s event includes speakers, booths and a protest march through the “Puppy Mill Capital of the East Coast” – Lancaster County.

Farm Sanctuary: Support Needed to Prevent Repeal of Foie Gras Ban in Chicago

Support Needed to Prevent Repeal of Foie Gras Ban in Chicago!

A ban on the sale of foie gras (French for “fatty liver”) recently went into effect in the city of Chicago, and in response, a group of chefs has initiated a campaign to repeal it. Opponents of the humane ordinance assert that serving the cruelly produced appetizer should be their “choice.” Two Chicago Aldermen have introduced an ordinance seeking to repeal Chicago’s foie gras sale ban, denigrating the council’s compassionate stance and calling it “silly.”

www.farmsanctuary.org/campaign/state_chicago.htm#Update

It is critical that they hear from us. Chicago’s foie gras sale ban is humane and upholds societal values. It restricts cruel and unacceptable behavior. We cannot allow the abuse of children or animals to be a “choice.” Foie gras is a product of extreme cruelty, and selling it should not be a “choice.”

Please contact Aldermans Bernard L. Stone and Burton F. Natarus and tell them that compassion is not “silly,” and cruelty should not be a “choice.” Urge them to withdraw their unprincipled proposal.

Church Promotes Cole Brothers Circus – Pls Call/Write

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY – contact info contained in the message below.

Everyone, please call the church that is being bamboozled into promoting the circus as a “family value.” Politely tell them that circuses represent cruelty, slavery and poaching animals from the wild. For more information about circuses, visit: www.circuses.com/

For words to use in your comments, go to: www.circuses.com/educators.asp

Just when we thought that the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus would no longer appear in the Washington area, we have discovered that it is returning, this time under the name of Cole Brothers Circus of the Stars.

We had also thought that Cole Brothers no longer exploited elephants, but the circus advertises that Tina and Jewel are back, along with camels. It appears that circuses no longer perform on Fairfax County (D.C. metro area) public land, but this one is appearing at a church, The Community Church in Ashburn, Virginia, from Thursday, Sept. 14 thru Sunday, Sept. 17.

The link below will allow you to contact church officials to educate them about the miserable lives of circus animals. If you wish to call the church, the number is 703-450-2152.

Pomegranates are Wonderful; Animal Testing Isn’t

Friends of Animals Boycotts Juice Company

Friends of Animals members and supporters have spoken. And they don’t want animal testing in their pomegranate juice.

The group called for a boycott of POM Wonderful brand juices until the company and its profits cease to be implicated in animal research or testing.

According to an April 2006 report in The New York Times Magazine, POM Wonderful owners Lynda Resnick and Stewart Resnick have funded $15 million in research on the health benefits of pomegranate juice. Friends of Animals members were stunned to learn that some of this money went to animal testing.

POM Wonderful has supported tests published in June 2005 on the effects of the juice on brain injuries in mice and on erectile dysfunction in rabbits.

“POM Wonderful should and can be mindful of the health of all species, not just our own,” said Friends of Animals president Priscilla Feral.

“Why not simply support and cite studies on human populations?” asked Feral. In 2005, Dr Dean Ornish published a paper in the American Journal of Cardiology, looking at blood flow to the heart in 45 patients with blocked arteries who were given a placebo or pomegranate juice.

“Until POM Wonderful makes a public commitment against animal testing, we’ll encourage people to choose a different juice.”
