You can use the following points to help you with your letter:

* Experts, eyewitnesses, and video documentation prove that physical abuse is standard practice for training elephants in circuses. True elephant sanctuaries and many zoos do not force elephants to perform confusing tricks because it cannot be done humanely.

* Tim Frisco, the Carson & Barnes trainer videotaped viciously attacking elephants, embedding sharp metal bullhooks deep into their flesh, shocking them with electrical currents, and instructing other trainers to hurt the elephants until they scream learned the trade from his father, a former Ringling trainer.

* Keeping elephants, tigers, and other exotic animals in captivity and forcing them to perform in front of crowds is dangerous and inherently cruel. Tigers in the wild can secure a territory of up to 2,000 square miles depending on the availability of food. They are nocturnal and solitary.

* In the wild, female elephants remain with their mothers their entire lives and males until they are 15 years old. Ringling prematurely removes baby elephants from their mothers, a barbaric practice that has contributed to the deaths of two elephants and caused serious injuries to two others.

* Circuses that use animals have no place in a compassionate society. Caring individuals should take personal responsibility by avoiding circuses that use animals.

Don’t forget to include your full name, address, and phone number (for verification purposes—street names and phone numbers will not be published). Letters should be less than 200 words. Thank you for writing!
