Compassionate Holiday Celebration

Join Farm Sanctuary for a Compassionate Holiday Celebration on Sunday, December 3 in Philadelphia! Your support will benefit Farm Sanctuary’s legislative efforts to ban foie gras in Philadelphia and cruel factory farming practices across the U.S. Guests will gather at Horizons to enjoy gourmet vegan hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, desserts, a silent auction, and special presentations by Farm Sanctuary President Gene Bauston and Councilman-At-Large Jack Kelly. To register or make a donation in support of this event, call 607-583-2225 ext. 221 or click here.

The Final Countdown

Less than two weeks remain before Arizona citizens will decide the fate of thousands of farm animals by voting on Proposition 204, which prohibits the cruel confinement of pigs in gestation crates, and calves in veal crates. Dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to collect enough signatures to place this measure on the ballot. We now need this same commitment to get the word out to Arizonans to stop animal cruelty by voting Yes on Prop 204 on November 7, 2006!

University Piglets, Once Slated for Slaughter, Embrace Life at Farm Sanctuary

In May 2006, Farm Sanctuary had the pleasure of welcoming six precious piglets to our California Shelter. Until their rescue they were seen as commodities, simple “test” subjects at a university veterinary school. Thankfully, a kind vet student, who did not want to see them sent to slaughter after they were of no “use” to science, spoke up for the piglets. Now their days are full of happy squeals and mud baths, as they enjoy sanctuary life and all that freedom has to offer. Click here to read more.

About Farm Sanctuary

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. Earthjustice: Save Our National Forests!

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Via Earthjustice:

Save Our National Forests!

This September, Earthjustice scored a huge victory for our roadless national forests when a federal district court ordered the reinstatement of the 2001 Roadless Rule. But today the Bush administration is scrambling to challenge this decision.

Today, we need your help to fight back and safeguard our victory. We need to generate as many letters as possible to Secretary of the USDA, Michael Johanns, demanding that he honor and enforce the Roadless Rule.

API to be featured in ABC News “20/20” investigation airing 10/27/06

Earlier this year API launched a groundbreaking investigation into the private ownership of dangerous exotic animals in the U.S., showcasing footage gathered by our investigative team during the latter part of 2005. (See our footage at www.api4animals.org/a3b_exotic_pets.php.) In an effort to bring this vital information to a wider audience, API contacted ABC following our launch, and triggered producers’ interest in knowing more about roadside zoos, private menageries, and private owners of exotic animals; the dangers of keeping wild animals in private settings; and the laws and regulations that protect the animals — and the people around them.

For more than 8 months, API has since been working with producers from ABC News on a story born from our investigation. Tonight this story will air and 20/20 will feature API, including an interview with API CEO Michelle Thew, in its investigation into the dangers of private animal “sanctuaries.”

Be sure to tune in and watch this important edition of 20/20!

The Wilderness Society: Stop the Public Lands Giveaway!

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Via The Wilderness Society:

Stop the Public Lands Giveaway!

New legislation has been introduced in Congress that could lead to the construction of thousands of miles of damaging and unnecessary new roads in Wilderness, National Parks, Wildlife Refuges and National Monuments. We need your help to stop it.

H.R. 6298 would undercut the protection of our national parks, wilderness areas, wildlife refuges, and other public lands by granting antiquated “rights-of-way” claims across federal lands. If passed, this bill would crisscross our public lands with a spider web of roads and development.

Please ask your representative to oppose it.

UCS: Challenge Your Candidates To Address Global Warming

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Via the Union of Concerned Scientists:

Challenge Your Candidates To Address Global Warming

You ask the questions. We help you get answers.

Ask the candidates for US House and Senate some tough questions about global warming and energy.

Energy affects nearly every aspect of our lives. Our nation’s energy choices affect the taxes we pay, the cost of heating our homes and getting to work and school. These choices affect the health of our communities and the safety of our nation. And with global warming, our energy choices are already affecting the world we leave to our kids.

One of the most powerful ways to tell future policymakers what’s important to voters is to ask them questions about the issues that affect us all, and to remind them that we want answers.

QuestionsforCandidates.org is an on-line toolkit you can use to ask candidates about their position on energy and global warming, remind them to answer your questions, and then view share their answers with others.

Take a few minutes to send a questionnaire to the candidates in your area – you’ll be glad you did – and we’ll all be better off for it.

DawnWatch tip: ABC’s 20/20 to cover privately held wild animals — 10/27/06

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: DawnWatch – news [at] dawnwatch.com
Date: Oct 26, 2006 10:30 AM
Subject: DawnWatch tip: ABC’s 20/20 to cover privately held wild animals –10/27/06

On Friday, October 27, ABC’s 20/20, which airs at 10pm ET/PT, will include a segment titled “Lions and Tigers and Bears in the Backyard.”

You can read a lot of the transcript and see a three minute version of the story on line at abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=2604901.

Michelle Thew of the Animal Protection Institute is interviewed.

In the three minute video on the website we see Dave Salmoni of Animal Planet mauled while “doing a live show at a Toronto zoo with a mild mannered lion named Bongo.” What we see is Salmoni taunting that wild animal with a stick and we see Bongo attack when he has had enough.

Salmoni says, “You believe they love you like you love them.” He continues, “They don’t have the same feelings that we do and they won’t think twice if they come to kill you.”

Really? They don’t have the same feelings we do? I wonder how Salmoni would feel and what he would do if some little guy half his size was bossing him around with a stick. Perhaps they have feelings much like we do, but they don’t have the same feelings for us, their jailers, as we have for them, our beautiful captives.

The show covers the tragic death of teenager Haley Hilderbrand who was killed on a visit to a tiger “sanctuary.” The tiger was also killed.
