Tell Congress: Animal Testing Has No Place in Federal Agencies

Right now in laboratories across the U.S., small animals are confined to stocks while chemicals eat away their soft skin, right down to the muscle and tissue. Who is responsible for this suffering? Federal agencies including the EPA, the FDA, and OSHA, among others. This suffering is completely unnecessary! Faster, less expensive, and better non-animal tests are available – and they are already the standard in many countries. [Read more...]

Over 100 Birds from New York City Find Refuge in the Country

On Thursday, Farm Sanctuary welcomed over 100 “broiler” chickens to our New York Shelter. These birds were among over 900 chickens abandoned in a Brooklyn, New York garage. Investigators found dead birds among the living, and several birds were too weak to survive the rescue. Two little birds, Karina, who is unable to walk, and Bette Davis, who is blind and missing part of a toe, are getting stronger by the hour, and giving us all hope that they will one day be able to scratch the earth, and dust bathe as every chicken should. Arizona’s Largest Newspaper Endorses Prop 204!

The Arizona Republic recently endorsed the state ballot initiative which would ban veal and gestation crates within Arizona by stating that “it is appropriate to restrict business practices that fall below a level of basic human decency….Proposition 204 is right for Arizona. The Arizona Republic recommends a ‘yes’ vote.” This is a huge victory! If you live in Arizona or know anyone who does, please urge them to vote Yes on Proposition 204 this coming November 7th!

Stock donations are a convenient way of giving and can provide significant tax savings benefits as well. When you donate stock, you receive a federal tax deduction for the full market value (selling price) of each stock contribution you make, and avoid paying capital gains taxes, so both you and the animals benefit. Make a difference this holiday season – your stock gift will help end suffering and save lives.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. DawnWatch: Arizona Republic comes out in favor of Prop 204 against gestation and veal crates — 10/19/06

Subject: DawnWatch: Arizona Republic comes out in favor of Prop 204 against gestation and veal crates — 10/19/06

The Arizona Republic has come out in support of Proposition 204, which would ban, in Arizona, the housing of sows and calves in small individual crates. The Thursday, October 19 editorial is headed: “A simple case of decency.”

It opens:

“Look into the eyes of an animal. What responsibilities come with the power humans have over such a creature?

“We think part of the answer lies in Proposition 204, the Humane Treatment of Farm Animals Act.

“It imposes restrictions on a particularly egregious practice in which pregnant pigs and baby cows are kept in enclosures so small that the animal cannot turn around.

“These practices are not part of traditional animal husbandry. They are part of a process correctly called factory farming, where animals are kept alive to grow and produce, but none of their basic instincts are given consideration.

“They have no access to sunlight. No chance to walk. Not even the ability to turn around.

“We believe this is wrong.”

IFAW: Tell Iceland to Stop Hunting Whales

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Via the International Fund for Animal Welfare:

Tell Iceland to Stop Hunting Whales

Despite an international ban on whaling adopted in 1986, Iceland has announced plans to hunt whales commercially for the first time in twenty years. Permits have been granted by Iceland’s Ministry of Fisheries for the hunting of 30 minke whales and nine endangered fin whales. Commercial whaling is an out-dated and unnecessary industry that should have ended a century ago with the use of whale oil lamps. The government of Iceland should be supporting its nation’s thriving and growing whale watching industry rather than sinking money and its political reputation into promoting the cruel hunting of whales.

Write a letter to Iceland’s Embassy urging Iceland to call off this hunt before it’s too late.

Keep O&G Rigs Out of America’s Special Places

The Bush Administration has pulled out all the stops to ramp up oil and gas leasing on public lands, with a target of drilling more than 118,000 new wells within the next two decades. This accelerated level of drilling could mar upwards of one million acres of our public lands, and some of the places being targeted are irreplaceable for their solitude, wilderness and wildlife habitat.

We can and we must put pressure on the Bush Administration to rescind this misguided plan. Please use our letter below to send an urgent message to Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne.

Dear Kinship Circle Member,

Kinship Circle is a 501c3 nonprofit organization… And has never before asked for your help.

But, we are in critical need of donations in order to fund our educational literature, website, and action campaigns. Unfortunately, Kinship Circle founder Brenda Shoss has depleted her personal savings and is uncertain about Kinship Circle’s future.

At AR2006 we were happy to send conference-goers home with piles of Kinship Circle literature! We write, design and produce original FACT SHEETS on most animal cruelty issues. But our literature racks came home empty and we do not have the means to print more.

Many of you have asked about bulk copies of our AR literature. We would LOVE to provide this, but cannot do so without significant contributions. If 100 people donate even $5, that is a start. We know you are inundated with requests for money… But don’t worry, you won’t find any glossy pamphlets from us in your mailbox because we can’t afford it!

In the last few years, Kinship Circle grew larger than anticipated. Without you, there is no Circle. Still, managing our list, website, research, writing, and campaigns have become a full-time job — with zero income. Please help Kinship Circle “stay in business” for animals.

You may send donations directly to:
Kinship Circle

John Grogan, famous for his sensitive portrayal of his relationship with his dog in the bestseller “Marley and Me,” writes about the elephants at the Philadelphia Zoo in his column in the Philadelphia Inquirer on Monday, October 16. The piece is headed, “Pack them off, but never forget” (p.B1)

Grogan describes walking around the zoo with the new zoo president. He writes:

“Up ahead are three of the zoo’s four elephants, standing close together in their small, dusty enclosure, looking lugubriously out over the crowds.

He notes that the elephants are an attraction, “Yet there is something undeniably sad about them, these intelligent and complicated mammals hardwired to roam freely across the vast savannahs of Africa penned into a mere one-third of an acre.

“It’s a little like squeezing four humans into a phone booth and saying, ‘Have a happy life.’
