True Majority: Protect our coasts, not oil profits

UPDATE, 12/5/06: One more action alert regarding S. 3711 – this one from the League of Conservation Voters (LCV).

Via True Majority:

Protect our coasts, not oil profits

This week the House is voting on a bill (S. 3711) that would benefit the oil industry by opening up more of our coastal areas to off-shore drilling — starting with Florida.

Tell your Representative to oppose this bill and protect our coasts, not Big Oil’s bottom line.

Find out more about S. 3711 here.

Audubon also has an action alert/sample letter available here.

Subject: Update on Coastal Drilling Bill

I was really hoping to have good news for you today, but Congress doesn’t always do the things we want them to, making our job of speaking out for what’s right even more important. Last week, nearly 20,000 of you asked your representatives to oppose a bill that would expose more of our coasts to offshore drilling. Thanks in part to your outcry, the bill couldn’t muster the support needed to pass on its own. But due to some underhanded (yet legal) tactics that they don’t teach on Schoolhouse Rock, it was pushed through at the last minute as an amendment to a more popular bill.

Instead of feeling defeated by this setback, we are planning more ways to get the change we know can happen. A new Congress is shaking up Washington next month, offering new opportunities to protect our environment and support real alternative energy solutions. We’ll be watching to make sure they live up to that promise, and we’ll keep you in the loop on how you can be part of it.
