From info [at] equineadvocates.com:

Monday, December 4, 2006 marks the day the U.S. Senate reconvenes for the last time in 2006, giving us approximately two weeks to pass S.1915, the Senate version of The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. The version that passed in the House of Representatives on September 7, 2006, H.R. 503, is already on the Senate calendar. In order for it to be brought to the full Senate before adjournment, a motion must be made to proceed so that it can come to the floor for a vote. If that happens, we believe it will pass easily. Then it can go to President Bush for his signature and take effect in 2007…

Please keep the pressure on for the next two weeks and urge your family and friends across the country to do the same. Repeat your calls, faxes and emails everyday or every couple days. This is a matter of life and death for America’s horses…

S.1915 currently has 33 cosponsors.

If one or both of your Senators are cosponsors, ask them to work hard to get this bill passed this year.

Dear Elected Officials,

I respectfully ask Senators representing my district to:

* Urge Senate leadership to proceed with the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915) — so this bill reaches the floor for a vote BEFORE Congress adjourns.

I implore the Senate Majority Leader, Minority Leader, and Majority Whip to:

* Dedicate a few hours of your time to America’s treasured horses. Please move to proceed with S. 1915 so it can come to the floor for a vote before Congress adjourns. On 9/7/06, a House version of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503) passed by a vote of 263-146. The Senate companion bill has 33 cosponsors and is scheduled on the Senate calendar.

I thank S. 1915 sponsors, Senators John Ensign and Mary Landrieu, and:

* Encourage you to work toward bringing this vital bill to the floor before adjournment.

I commend incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for voting to pass H.R. 503:

* Please contact Senate colleagues — specifically incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — to ask him to urge outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to mobilize S. 1915 before adjournment.

A federal ban is imperative to stop the annual killing of some 100,000 horses for consumption abroad. Horse slaughter is a profoundly inhumane industry. Discarded horses are sent from auction to slaughter inside double-decker livestock trailers built for smaller animals. Most arrive weak, dehydrated and injured after treks that last up to 30 hours.

At the processing plant horses are herded into holding pens, where they subsist amid the inescapable stench of blood and death. On the killing floor, workers fire metal shunts into their brains. The captive bolt pistols (crafted for cows, sheep and pigs) are rarely forceful enough to stun these long-necked animals. Dangling by a shackled rear leg, many regain consciousness as their throats are slit and their bodies dismembered.

I call upon each of you to act on behalf of U.S. voters who overwhelmingly support a ban on horse slaughter. Americans don’t consume horsemeat and don’t want our horses killed for overseas diners. Please address S. 1915 before adjournment and bring it before the full Senate for a vote.

Thank you,

  1. Ivanka Steener Says:

We must get this bill passed and stop the slaughter of an American icon. Please call your Senators and urge them to pass this bill. 70 percent of Americans are against the slaughter of horses and the Senate is still sitting on it.
