Animal Abuse
URGENT! Please help Bobo, the dog dragged behind his owner’s SUV
I need some help on behalf of a little dog dragged behind his owner’s SUV. I am a TN resident who has watched with great interest as well as great horror the developments in Bobo’s tragic story of being dragged behind his owner’s SUV for a mile. Link to story: www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=40677. I called LaFollette Veterinary Services (providing medical care for Bobo), and was told that his owner, Susan Baird not only didn’t show any remorse when confronted by an animal control officer, but she has not checked on her dog since his trauma, and Bobo has endured several surgeries already, including 2 surgeries just to re-attach his ears. When the animal control officer notified Susan Baird of the little 10 pound dog attached by a leash to the trailer hitch of her SUV, she removed the leash from her dog and made him get into her SUV unassisted. She is charged with animal cruelty, a misdemeanor. [Read more...]
Stop “TERRORISM” against Wild Animals in India

KFC Cruelty – We do chickens Wrong
PETA is asking KFC to eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer on the factory farms and in the slaughterhouses of its suppliers, including live scalding, life-long crippling, and painful debeaking. The more than 850 million chickens killed each year for KFC are tortured in ways that would result in felony cruelty-to-animals charges if cats or dogs were the victims, but KFC still refuses to make changes. As the leader in the chicken industry, KFC has a responsibility to ensure that the chickens raised for its buckets are protected from the worst cruelties. [Read more...]

JAPAN’S CATS & DOGS NEED OUR HELP
The public finally has to become informed about the living situation of our animal friends in High-Tec-Japan. There have been several reports about whale-hunting and dolphin massacres for many years. However, not only whales and dolphins suffer and die, slaughtered by humans, but also many other species. They haven’t been taken into account yet by the international animal welfare organizations or animal rights associations, because outside of Japan none or only very few facts about their sad destiny are known by the people. There has been a recent outbreak of Ebola in West Africa. It has killed 5,000 gorillas, and the species faces extinction, especially due to hunting of the animal. DawnWatch: Year end round-up — plus a calf finds sanctuary, and two elephants await it — 12/22/06

Subject: DawnWatch: Year end round-up — plus a calf finds sanctuary, and two elephants await it — 12/22/06
As I wrap up for the year, first I get to share a beautiful story of a calf named Herbie, who made a break for it on his way to the slaughterhouse. He ended up at Animal Care and Control in New York, where it was decided that his owners did not have the best intentions for him. He has been released instead to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. You can watch the delightful story on the WCBSTV website at wcbstv.com/local/local_story_356155241.html.
Please send a thank you for the coverage, which the reporter chose to close with the line:
“After all it is that time of year when a child born in a manger, surrounded by animals, reminded us that we are all, people and animals, unique and living creatures bound together.”
Go to wcbstv.com/contact and choose reporter Pablo Guzman’s name from the pull-down menu.
There has been so much on elephants in the news this year, it is fitting that the last DawnWatch story sent out in 2006 concerns them. In the Friday, December 22, Washington Post we see an article by Marc Kaufman headed, “Two Elephants Must Relocate, Seek Good Home.” (p A2) It is about Nicolas and Courtney who are the last of the Hawthorne elephants still in the barn North of Chicago. The article tells us:
“The barn’s owner, who rents out circus animals, was ordered by the Agriculture Department to give away his 16 elephants in early 2004 because of a long list of violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.” Most of the elephants went to the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, but that sanctuary has a females only policy, so Nicolas was not accepted and Courtney was left behind as his companion.

LCA: AETA Update from Chris DeRose
Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

From: Campaigns Department – campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: Dec 22, 2006 4:37 PM
Subject: AETA Update from Chris DeRose
“I Am Not a Terrorist”
LCA is unwavering in our commitment to challenge the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), no matter how hard or how long it takes.
We are continuing our coalition building with other major animal groups, welfare, protection, rescue and rights organizations, as well as legal organizations and non-animal organizations, to work together so that there is a single message from all of us. This is important! Our voices must be strong and unified to gather support for the repeal of the AETA.
We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback and the number of people that want to join the fight. We have been in touch with people all over the county. The public needed someone to carry the torch and to have a main focus.
I want to continue stressing that the AETA has the ability to affect all animal groups; welfare, protection, rescue and rights. In LCA fashion, we will stay on it and pursue it until it no longer exists.
Please continue contacting your senators and representatives. Let them know that you support the repeal of the AETA and you want them to support the repeal also! Call back frequently; become familiar with the staff…you can make a difference.
For those of you near Washington D.C. – members of Congress will be sworn in on Thursday, January 4th, and most will hold receptions for their constituents. This is a great opportunity to approach your representatives (and others) about repealing the AETA. They usually require an RSVP, but they may not be too strict about barring unannounced visitors.
Check in with LCA and Equal Justice Alliance often for updated information on the fight against the AETA.
We’re going to kick ass and stop this damn thing!

Chris DeRose

Farm Sanctuary’s E-News & Action Alert 12/22/06

Snowflake and Snowball: Two Leghorns Find Freedom at our California Shelter
Snowflake and Snowball, at only a few months old, were to be euthanized before they came to Farm Sanctuary. However, nothing was physically wrong with these beautiful, healthy leghorn hens. Instead, they were simply going to be killed because the researchers who used them in university experiments did not need them anymore. Thankfully, with the help of a compassionate student/staff person at the university, their lives did not end prematurely. Snowflake and Snowball instead are now happy and thriving at our California Shelter! Click here to read more.
Make it a happy holiday for the sanctuary animals! From blankets and towels for the shelter to pens and copy paper, we are in need of equipment and supplies for both our New York and California Shelters. The animals are hoping for their favorite holiday treats, too! In-kind donations are tax-deductible and reduce our costs so that every dollar possible is spent helping more farm animals. See Farm Sanctuary’s complete Wishlist online.
Make a New Year’s Resolution to join the Say No to Foie Gras Campaign!
Activists have helped make great strides in 2006 by educating the public about the extreme cruelty involved in foie gras production, as well as making legislative history in Chicago. However, the powerful and wealthy foie gras industry and their supporters are fighting back hard. Please renew your commitment to ending this cruel and unnecessary animal product by making 2007 the year that gets foie gras off more menus and into more laws!
Farm Sanctuary is very grateful to the more than 800 individuals, as well to the generous coordinators and donors who took part in our 2006 Walk for Farm Animals. Held in over forty-four cities across the U.S. and Canada, and raising more than $120,000 for our rescue, education and advocacy programs, our 21st annual Walk has not only been the most successful to date, but has also educated more people than ever before about the cruelty of factory farming.
