Tuesday night’s (January 23) wonderful episode of Veronica Mars is now up on line at video.cwtv.com/.

It is lots of fun and fantastically animal friendly. Enjoy!

The plot teaches viewers about the plight of animals in university research. And it looks like Veronica’s best friend is about to get involved with a charming animal rights activist. What a nice addition to the cast of characters!

If you missed yesterday’s DawnWatch write-up on the episode, which summarized the plot, it is on line at tinyurl.com/2zw8wk.

Defenders of Wildlife: Save Peruvian Jaguars and Other Rainforest Wildlife

Via Defenders of Wildlife:

Save Peruvian Jaguars and Other Rainforest Wildlife

The Peru Free Trade Agreement would sanction the destruction of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest — home to jaguars, long-haired spider monkeys, blue-headed macaws, giant river otters and other endangered species — by failing to address the illegal harvest and trade in mahogany.

Free trade shouldn’t mean illegal trade! Send a message to your Representative and Senators urging them to reject the Peru Free Trade Agreement.

DawnWatch: NY Times Dining cover on vegan punk chef 1/24/07

From: DawnWatch – news [at] dawnwatch.com>

Subject: DawnWatch: NY Times Dining cover on vegan punk chef 1/24/07

There is a delightful article by Julia Moskin on the cover of the Dining Section of the Wednesday, January 24, New York Times, headed, “Strict Vegan Ethics, Frosted With Hedonism.” It is about Brooklyn vegan chef Isa Chandra Moskowitz, the co-author of “Vegan with a Vengeance,” “Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World,” and the host of the public-access television cooking show, the Post-Punk Kitchen.

It tells us, “As a vegan and a follower of punk music since age 14, she is also part of a culinary movement that helped turn the chaotic energy of punk culture of the 1970s and 1980s into a progressive political force….The charm of Ms. Moskowitz — in person, in her cookbooks and on her public-access television cooking show, the Post-Punk Kitchen (theppk.com/shows/) — is that she makes even the deprivations of veganism and the rage of punk seem like fun. Like feminism that embraces makeup and miniskirts — the frivolous bits — Ms. Moskowitz’s veganism embraces chocolate, white flour, confectioners’ sugar, and food coloring.”

Moskowitz says, “I would love to live in a world where I knew the eggs came from happy chicken. But in Brooklyn? That’s not going to happen.

And, “I learned knife skills by cooking for Food not Bombs. But I also learned to love Julia Child and Martha Stewart. Vegan food can and must be pretty.”

Protect Polar Bears From Global Warming

In response to the Center for Biological Diversity’s petition and lawsuit, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to list the polar bear as a threatened species. Polar bears are threatened with extinction as global warming literally melts away their Arctic sea-ice habitat.

Please let the Bush administration know that you support the proposal to list the polar bear, and that we must reduce greenhouse gas pollution immediately to slow global warming and save the polar bear from extinction.

American Rivers: U.S. to Canada – Stop Mine Threat to Montana’s Flathead River

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Via American Rivers:

U.S. to Canada – Stop Mine Threat to Montana’s Flathead River

It’s called the North Fork River by some, but most know it as the Flathead River. Regardless of the name, this Wild and Scenic River is one our country’s natural jewels, blessed with crystal clear water and unparalleled beauty. Not for long, though, if the Cline Mining Corporation convinces Canadian officials to destroy the headwaters of the Flathead in British Columbia. The company’s proposed open-pit mine would gouge two million tons of coal per year from the river’s source for the next 20 years. Not if we (and you) can help it!

There’s more at stake than this one river. The Flathead also serves as the source of Flathead Lake’s crystal clear waters. And its watershed supports a vast array of wildlife in Montana, including more grizzlies per acre than anywhere else in the Rocky Mountains. Touted as America’s “wildest valley,” the area surrounding the river and its namesake lake is protected by Glacier National Park and a Wild and Scenic River designation.

While the mine proposal is being assessed, Canadian authorities have graciously agreed to accept comments from U.S. residents — but only until Thursday, February 1. Please take a moment to let them know that you appreciate the opportunity to provide input, and then tell them you OPPOSE the mine affecting our beloved Flathead River.

WWF: Help save Australia’s ‘Galapagos’

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Via the World Wildlife Fund:

Help save Australia’s ‘Galapagos’

Barrow Island is the second largest island in Western Australia, and is one of Australia’s oldest nature reserves. But this remarkable place, described as Australia’s ‘Galapagos’ because of its rare and endangered species, now faces unprecedented threats.

In December 2006, the Western Australian Government overruled the advice of its own Environmental Protection Authority and approved the development on the island of a huge gas plant by the energy companies, Chevron, Shell and ExxonMobil.

Risks to wildlife from the massive project include the introduction of invasive species and diseases in the thousands of tonnes of material and equipment needed to build the plant. The development would also require the construction of a port in a pristine tropical area previously
earmarked for inclusion in the surrounding marine park and the dredging of deep shipping channels in coral reef habitat.

You can help protect Barrow Island by signing our petition to the energy consortium (Chevron, Shell and ExxonMobil). Tell them to halt plans to locate the gas plant on the island and
instead look to alternative mainland locations.

Center for Biological Diversity: Stop the war against the Mexican Wolf!

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Via the Center for Biological Diversity:

Stop the war against the Mexican Wolf!

Fewer than 10 years ago, the federal government reintroduced Mexican Gray Wolves into Arizona and New Mexico: progeny of the few wolves that survived the government’s six-decade extermination program and that were trapped for captive breeding. The reintroduction was meant to recover and restore to the wild Mexican Wolves after their near extinction from an extermination campaign that included poisoning, trapping, shooting, and den-excavating.

But now the government is again killing Mexican Wolves: locating them by radio collars and shooting them from the air, digging up wolf pups that then don’t survive captivity, trapping wolves and splitting up family packs.

Why is the government doing this? Because the livestock industry successfully pushed for rules and protocols that require such aggressive predator control of wolves in the Southwest, far beyond government violence carried out against wolves or other endangered animals elsewhere. [...]

Last month the Center for Biological Diversity sued the Fish and Wildlife Service to save the Mexican Wolf. The lobo also needs your direct help. Please request congressional hearings into this mismanaged program in order to apply added pressure on the Bush administration to stop the war against the Mexican Gray Wolf.

Legal Standing Argued in Landmark Lawsuit

This week, Farm Sanctuary argued in court that we should have legal standing to defend pregnant pigs who are confined for most of their lives in narrow metal gestation crates without the ability to even turn around. This intensive confinement without any exercise area is in violation of California’s animal anti-cruelty law. To make the case in our lawsuit against Corcpork, Inc., one of California’s largest pig breeding facilities, Farm Sanctuary’s attorney cited an earlier ruling (Farm Sanctuary vs. California Department of Agriculture) that said unless an organization like Farm Sanctuary was able to speak on behalf of the animals, the animals would have no protection.

In Loving Memory – Sweet Pie

Sweet Pie – all 2,300 pounds – lived up to every bit of his gentle name. An unwanted by-product of the dairy industry, he was found on November 26, 1993 as a young bull, and was one of the first animals to be brought to Farm Sanctuary’s then newly opened California Shelter. Abandoned, destitute and deprived of food and water, Sweet Pie was near death when finally found and taken to safety. He was thankfully brought back to health by our staff, and lived a long and peaceful life at Farm Sanctuary. Click here to read more.

Dogs Die at the End of Chains as Cold Sweeps the Nation

Nonprofit Urges Citizens to Report Abuse/Media to Remind People to Bring Companions Out of the Cold

Tipton, PA January 18, 2007

18 January, 2007, Altoona, PA — Dogs Deserve Better, a national nonprofit working to bring dogs into the home and family, has received reports of dogs dying as a result of being left chained or penned in frigid temperatures. “Two pitbulls were removed from a home in Boulder County, CO, last week after neighbors called animal control. The dogs had been left outside in extremely cold temperatures for several days. One of the dogs suffered from frostbite and the other had to be euthanized because of the severity of its injuries,” the Boulder Humane Society said.

This scenario is repeating itself across America with dogs whose stories will never be told and whose deaths will go unnoticed, unmourned, and unjustified.

As cold sweeps as far south as Texas, San Antonio drew press reports of a dog chained outside without shelter. “He’s suffering. He cries a lot,” said neighbor Josie Jeffries, “At nighttime, he starts crying. And he’s not barking, he’s crying. Officers came and they saw the dog tied up outside freezing. They’ve talked to the owner and they won’t do anything about it,” said Jeffries.

They aired a follow-up the following evening, the anchor holding a big stack of emails received from viewers in response to the first story.

Yesterday, January 17, the station aired a piece about the prosecutor’s choice to move forward. The anchors mentioned that the case had generated interest not just across the viewing area but on the internet around the world. I send a huge thank you to all who wrote!
Signing off last night’s story, reporter Bill Safos said, “We will follow the story because there has been much interest in this…”

It includes horrifying footage of a conscious sow being hung, strangling slowly.
