CAMPAIGN UPDATE: HUGE LEAPS FORWARD
March 13, 2007
********************************
I have big news to share with you today on three of The Humane Society of the United States’ priority campaigns:
COCKFIGHTING VICTORY: FORTY-NINE DOWN, ONE TO GO
Yesterday, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson signed a measure that outlaws cockfighting in that state, a major victory in our campaign to rid the nation of this barbaric and cruel practice. The HSUS worked closely with Animal Protection of New Mexico to achieve this historic outcome. The ban leaves Louisiana as the only state where the centuries-old bloodsport remains legal, and
The HSUS will mount a major effort to outlaw the practice there when the state’s legislative session begins on April 30.
Thank you for speaking out for tougher penalties for illegal animal fighting and supporting the Animal Fighting Prohibition
Enforcement Act. Please let your friends and family know how they can help move this bill to the finish line.
HSUS TO CONSUMERS: BEWARE OF DOG
Today, The HSUS escalated our campaign to protect animals and consumers from widespread abuses by the apparel industry. We
filed a legal petition with the Federal Trade Commission this morning seeking to enforce the Fur Products Labeling Act against
14 major retailers and designers concerning false advertising and false labeling of garments with fur trim. Click here to read more.
Also this morning, the “Today” show reported on our investigation that turned up products made with fur from dogs and other species that were sold as either fake fur or other types of animal fur in violation of the Federal Fur Products Labeling Act. In response to our investigation, many retailers and designers acted to put customers and animals first — notably Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, which have both pledged to go fur free within a year. But a disappointing number of stores and designers did not take appropriate action and are listed in our petition.
Click here to watch this morning’s “Today” show segment, then tune in tomorrow for a scheduled follow-up story.
And I want to thank you contacting your U.S. Representative about the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act, which
will close the loophole that allowed this deception. Please urge your friends to take action, too.
TEXAS SHUTTERS TWO HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANTS
Finally, I’m pleased to report that we are striking at the heart of the grisly horse slaughter industry. Thanks to a federal
court ruling that upholds a Texas law banning horse slaughter for human consumption, Texas’ two plants may be permanently shut
down. Only one slaughterhouse will remain open — in Illinois, and now we are targeting that operation.
You’ve been a strong voice for ending horse slaughter; thank you. We need every American who cares about the humane treatment of animals to speak out and finally end this grisly practice. Please let your friends and family know that their voice
matters, too.
Thank you for taking action today, and for all you do for animals.
Sincerely,
Wayne Pacelle
