BACKGROUND:

3/24/07, from Marijo [at] wagny.org — The Clock is Ticking - We Need International Assistance Urgently. We are no closer to securing the release of the 100 Greek strays, rescued, nursed back to health and loved by Greek and foreign advocates. Confiscated in Ancona, Italy, on their way to permanent homes in Germany and Holland, the dogs are the victims of a witch hunt carried out by a woman convinced the animals are headed for vivisection…The Italian public prosecutor will make a decision regarding the fate of the dog’s lives on Monday or during the week. IT IS CRITICAL THAT WE ACT NOW.

Original message from artutier [at] web.de, Tierschutz-Notruf [at] t-online.de

BACKGROUND:

3/20/07, www.Tierschutz-Notruf.de — I am a citizen of India. I wanted to bring this to your notice that stray dogs are being slaughtered in the city of Bangalore, India. The government has ordered for the culling of the entire stray dog and pet dog population. Also, since New Delhi is the venue for The Commonwealth Games in 2010, the government plans to kill all the stray dogs here too. The dogs are being butchered. They are being caught by inexperienced dog catchers. Their jaws are being broken while they are still alive, acid is being thrown at them to ‘calm’ them down, they are being burnt alive and also buried alive, their throats are being slashed, cyanide is being injected in their hearts leading to the bursting of their hearts, and are being inhumanely electrocuted. There are very few animal lovers in Bangalore and they are threatened by anti-dog societies…

To the Government of India / To the Administration
Subject: Burning of living beings

Dear Excellency, Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Mahatma Ghandi is until this time for a lot of people in the world an ideal of a person in India, living for non-violent dealing and for freedom.

Now we must hear that in this country India, where Mahatma Ghandi lived and worked, where he fought against violence, animals in Bangladore, dogs are burned still alive! What kind of cruelty in a country of Mahatma Ghandi is going on there? The peaceful people from India- what are they doing? When we heard this news a world in us, the image of India was totally broken in our minds. Our sympathy for your country is finished suddenly.

We please you in the interest of your country, in the interest of all peaceful people to stop this violence now! Animals, dogs are living beings, they have souls and emotions. Your religion of Hinduism is a leading religion and a example for the respect of all living beings!

We can imagine, that to solve the problems with dogs in the street isn’t easy. But we believe to your intelligence to solve this problem without murdering life!

If you don’t know to manage this problems of the dogs: Please ask for substitution! Castrating dogs, to put them outside in a special good place would be a solution. BUT: This murdering, burning life with fire, burning the souls of life, life perhaps of a earlier life… These cruelties are to stop at once! You are burning the lives and souls….

Here are the proofs going around the world in internet:

What is with this country India, with its religion, with the country of Mahatma Gandhi? We are totally disconcerted…

EDITED FOR LENGTH

3/21/07, From OIPA International Campaigns Director, international [at] oipa.org

3/21/07, From Suzi Psenicnik, sxp2010 [at] yahoo.com — Please advise if you can help save two young lions in Osijek, Croatia Zoo. The news story attached below was printed in newspaper in Osijek, Croatia on 18 March 2007.

“Young lions are nameless, totally neglected, starved and sick. It appears that euthanasia is the only way out for them. Even though Osijek Zoo management is trying to portray an ideal situation for the animals in the zoo, especially noting that the animals enjoy the largest living areas in this part of Europe, the situation is exactly the opposite.

…Two young lions, almost 2 years old will be put to sleep. This tragedy is even bigger because they were mistreated by the zoo staff. Two lions were placed in small enclosures even though other lions have a large living area. They were malnutritioned and their legs were shaking when they attempted to stand, and some areas of their bodies were completely hairless. We also found out… they are blind. Miroslav Dolezal, the new Unikom director told us that he is aware of the situation even though he has been the director only two months. He confirmed our information and… that they will most likely have to put lions to sleep…

Keeping lions in condition like that is violation of Animal Protection Law and violation of Croatian Law itself, I’ve mentioned that at press conference in front of the media.

We are asking people who are experts or know know an expert on big cats (lions especially), to visit Osijek, examine the young lions and make an educated and decision regarding possibility of life of these young animals.

WE NEED YOUR URGENT RESPONSE! Suzana Psenicnik

8. Teacher Says Iditarod Musher Was Slugging, Kicking Dogs

REPLY TO DIRECTLY TO: SledDogAC [at] aol.com
Sled Dog Action Coalition, www.helpsleddogs.org

BACKGROUND: EDITED FOR LENGTH

By GEORGE BRYSON / Anchorage Daily News, 3/20/07 — A Golovin village grade-school teacher who observed Iditarod musher Ramy Brooks mistreat his dog team — an episode that led to the veteran Healy musher’s disqualification — saw something more disturbing than what Brooks or Iditarod officials have reported.

When Brooks’ team refused to move, said 28-year-old Maude Paniptchuk, who teaches kindergarten through second grade at Golovin School, he kicked the dogs and hit them with his fist and a ski pole. He didn’t merely spank them with a thin piece of lath used as a trail marker Sunday…

And contrary to an earlier account reported by Brooks’ business manager, it wasn’t a tangle of students that caused the dogs to stop on a patch of ice on the outskirts of Golovin, a small village on the Iditarod Trail about 15 miles west of White Mountain — the dogs appeared exhausted, she said.

Besides herself and her 1-year-old son, there were only two small children and a grown man who observed the incident, she said… Reached in Nome on Monday night, Nordman acknowledged that he spoke with Paniptchuk, and he doesn’t dispute her story…

“I didn’t want to get too close, because I didn’t want to upset the dogs,” Paniptchuk said. “I heard him swearing at his dogs, trying to get them to go. Then I saw him hit a couple…” She never saw Brooks hit the dogs with a piece of 1/4-inch by 1- 1/2-inch lath used as a trail stake — as first Brooks’ business manager, Greg Louden and later Nordman reported.

“No, he used his hand,” she said. “And then he kicked a couple, and he used his pole — like a ski pole — to hit them.” …She continued to watch for about 15 or 20 minutes as Brooks continued without success to grab his leaders and try to pull them forward, Paniptchuk said.

…Nordman acknowledged that the account conveyed to Iditarod officials by Brooks himself differs from the school teacher’s. But even the musher’s version was grave enough for the three race judges to rule that he should be disqualified on those grounds alone, Nordman said. “By no means am I disputing what Maude saw,” he said. “This had to be dealt with and it had to be dealt with in a quick fashion.”

Right now, Nordman said, he’s still trying to officiate the end of the Iditarod. “Once we get back to town, I’m sure there will be much more discussion on it.”

CONTACT INFORMATION TO PROTEST:

According to a March 20 article in the Anchorage Daily News, witnesses report that Ramy Brooks was slugging and kicking his dogs in the Iditarod this year. Brooks’ dog Kate died shortly afterwards. Please ask Brooks’ sponsors to end their support:

9. Urge South Africa to ‘Cull’ Elephant Killing From Policy

REPLY DIRECTLY TO: Melgraj2 [at] aol.com

BACKGROUND: EDITED FOR LENGTH

South Africa’s newest elephant “management” policy includes killing as an option for controlling elephant populations.

These mass killing operations tear apart elephant families and leave the survivors permanently scarred. Between 1967 and 1995, 14,562 elephants in South Africa’s Kruger National Park were culled. Terrified elephants were herded into groups with helicopters while people on the ground and in the air opened fire with high-powered weapons. Elephants are capable of communicating over long distances, and their death screams were undoubtedly heard by other elephants miles away. Innumerable orphaned calves, who were regarded as valuable collateral, were sold to zoos and circuses, where many were beaten into submission, chained, and confined and had their precious freedom taken and their spirits broken. And scientists are now determining that these individuals were left with lifelong emotional trauma from witnessing the violent executions of their families.

Although elephants are considered by many to be the quintessential symbol of the African continent and ecotourism plays an important role in the South African economy, many of the country’s officials treat elephants as nuisances to be “controlled,” marketed, and profited from…

Numerous scientists have condemned South Africa’s proposal to kill elephants. There is no evidence that elephants pose an imminent risk to biodiversity. Reducing the elephant population is arbitrary and scientifically unsound, and it reflects outdated wildlife-management principles.

Please urge South Africa to remove culling from the list of options for elephant “management” and implement the humane, sensible suggestions advocated by scientists and reported by Care for the Wild International, including the following:

• Reduce the number of artificially created watering holes — this would divert elephants to previously underutilized areas.

• Expand protected elephant habitats by linking them to adjacent areas, and develop migration corridors to other regions.

• Develop community-based wildlife-conservation programs outside the existing protected areas to increase the benefits of tourism to nearby rural areas.

• Protect vulnerable and valuable areas by erecting and maintaining fences and implementing other nonlethal deterrents.

• Administer contraception, which is affordable and involves minimal intervention that can reduce the number of elephants in a large population.

10. Nearly 2 Years Since Rescue, We Return To Same Place

REPLY DIRECTLY TO: Forwarded by R.A. Kirkpatrick, raaz-k [at] airmail.net
Original message: Refugio KIMBA, protectorakimba [at] hotmail.com

BACKGROUND:

3/9/07, From protectorakimba [at] hotmail.com — First of all, we would like to remind you of the 17 dogs who we, along with the Seprona, rescued in the town of Chiclana de la Frontera (Cadiz) on May 25, 2005. On that day we were able to see with our own eyes how a woman, with obvious mental problems, was keeping some poor dogs in conditions that were terribly denigrating, unhygienic, repugnant, and all of the other qualifying adjectives imaginable to turn their lives into an authentic horror story.

You can see the first rescue by going to the following link: [here]

The above mentioned woman was living among dead bodies of dogs in different stages of decomposition… We at Kimba were involved in that rescue, along with the Seprona division of the Guardia Civil. Also present were members of the city council of Chiclana along with the local police, the city’s municipal veterinarian, and a social worker from the above mentioned town…

On March 6, 2007, nearly two years after that rescue, we returned to the same place and again, along with the Seprona, rescued 20 dogs from the hands of that same woman, still alone and sick, and still living in the midst of garbage. You can see in these photos that dogs were living in the same terrible conditions as the first ones that we rescued.

Atentamente.

E-activism campaign to urge the U.S. Department of Defense to improve the lives of animals in Iraq.

PRAYER OF A STRAY
Dear God please send me somebody who’ll care!
I’m tired of running, I’m sick with despair.
My body is aching, it’s so racked with pain.
And Dear God I pray as I run in the rain,
That someone will love me and give me a home.
A warm cozy bed I can call my own
My last owner neglected me and chased me away
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
But now God I’m tired and hungry and cold.
And I’m afraid that I will never grow old.
They’ve chased me with sticks and hit me with stones
While I run in the streets just looking for bones!
I’m not really bad God, please help if you can.
For I have become just a “VICTIM OF MAN!”
I’m wormy, dear God, I’m ridden with fleas
While all I want is an owner to please!
If you find one for me God, I’ll try to be good
I won’t run away and I’ll do as I should.
I don’t think I’ll make it too long on my own,
Cause I’m getting so weak and I’m so all alone.
Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
Cause I’m so afraid God, that I’m gonna die!
And I’ve got so much love and devotion to give,
That I should be given a new chance to live.
So Dear God PLEASE, PLEASE answer my prayer
And send me somebody who WILL really care…
