* Urgent: Five Dogs Dead on Their Chains in Georgia

Also, more info on the Menu Foods recall:

Is Iams’ Dry Food Also Contaminated?

DDB: Anti-Tethering Bills, Rally for Grimes on 4/17

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

The latest issue of Dogs Deserve Better’s eNewsletter (which does not appear to be available online) includes the the following items of interest:

Eight States are Hard at Work on Anti-Tethering Bills

Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, and Rhode Island

Maryland’s legislation is highest priority right now, if you live in Maryland, it’s critical for you to visit the site and start contacting your representatives to get the bill out for a vote. Most of the others are just getting started, and need all citizens help to progress. If your state is listed amongst these, please visit the link, below, and see how you get involved. If your state isn’t listed, visit the link anyway to see what kind of laws are being proposed this year, and get ideas for your state. It’s not too late for this legislative session!

More excellent legislative news: Troy City, Michigan, Middletown, Ohio, Texas City, Texas have all passed anti-tethering legislation in the past month! Lee’s Summit, Missouri, DeSoto, Tennessee, Denver, Colorado, Deerfield Beach, FL, New York City, Arkansas City, Kansas, and Austin, Texas are all considering anti-tethering legislation as we write as well.

Please visit DDB’s State Legislative Effort Page for current info and local calls to action.

Also, those in the PA area (specifically, Hollidaysburg) may want to attend the April 17 9AM pre-trial rally for DDB founder Tammy Grimes:

Come to a Rally for Grimes before the Motion to Dismiss Hearing April 17, 2007 at 9:00 a.m.

Can you come to a pre-trial rally at the Hollidaysburg Courthouse for Tammy Grimes at 9:00 a.m. April 17th?

The pre-trial hearing is at 10:30, so let’s be there at 9:00 a.m., sporting signs, listening to a few speakers, and in general showing support for Tammy and what she did for Doogie.

We’ll make sure we have new signs made from the Doogie material and buttons for everyone that comes. If you can come in from out of town, please try! The more people we have standing together, the better for our cause and for justice. To see Altoona hotels and motels, visit the Altoona.com site. If we have a lot of people who need rooms, we will see if we can get a cheap room block somewhere.

Background and additional info on the case is available here.

The Wilderness Society: Keep Wyoming Wildlife Safe!

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Via The Wilderness Society:

Keep Wyoming Wildlife Safe!

The Pinedale Anticline in western Wyoming’s Upper Green River Valley harbors significant winter range for world class populations of mule deer, pronghorn and sage grouse, as well as large herds of moose and elk. It also occupies ground zero in the Bush Administration’s plan to sacrifice ecologically sensitive public lands to the oil and gas industry.

The Anticline is a highly profitable gas field outside the town of Pinedale where industry is seeking to radically escalate the level of development, from 500 wells now to more than 4,000 in the future. This, despite ample evidence that past drilling has pushed wintering mule deer off this crucial piece of winter
habitat.

The Wilderness Society is part of an effort to reduce the scale of this project. You can help by weighing in with the BLM. To send a letter and be heard, click here.

Subject: Feral Cats in Syracuse, KS Need YOUR Help!

Large Feral Cat Colony in Syracuse, KS Needs YOUR Help!
100 barn cats in Syracuse, KS need new homes!

The owner of the farm where these cats have resided for years has moved to a nursing home. Feral cat groups in your community have intervened to save these cats. Relocation is the only option.

Friends of Felines in Sedgwick, Kansas, Cat Care Network in Raton, New Mexico, and Best Friends Animal Society have made plans to humanely trap, spay/neuter, and vaccinate these feral cats but they still need your help.

With the efforts of feral cat groups, concerned veteranians, and local citizens, these cats will find new and welcoming outdoor homes.

Friends of Felines is leading this effort and needs your help:

* Volunteers to help with trapping and transporting the cats

* RELOCATION SITES! Friends of Felines can assist with preparations at the relocation site. They will only relocate cats in groups of five or more

* Donations to purchase traps and carriers

If you are interested in joining others in your community to help these cats, please contact Ray Huff of Friends of Felines:

RAN: Real Forest Protection Now

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Via the Rainforest Action Network:

Real Forest Protection Now

Though ANZ is Australia’s third largest bank, it is the country’s leading financier of environmentally destructive projects. One of ANZ’s most controversial clients, Gunns Limited, is rapidly destroying Tasmania’s forests. ANZ recently developed a draft forests policy that was supposed to apply ethical criteria to its investments. Unfortunately, the policy doesn’t reflect our discussions with the bank and would allow the bank to continue funding destructive projects, including Gunns’ pulp mill in Tasmania and illegal logging in Indonesia.

Tell ANZ’s Sustainability Director Gavin Murray that his company should develop a real forests policy and commit to not funding the Gunns pulp mill project!

Then, head on over to The Wilderness Society of Australia’s web site for updates and a list of additional actions you can take.

Mighty Morphin Bush Babies

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Via Defenders of Wildlife, a really cute but totally time-wasting, errr, time waster:

Visit YouWild.org and transform yourself — or a friend, family member, or pet — into a wolf pup, panda, sea otter, or one of our other adorable, majestic, or scary-looking critters!

Just create your personal animal morph page, and then share it with friends, family, co-workers and others to help us raise awareness about the plight of our imperiled wildlife.

YouWild.org is simple to use — you start by choosing one of twenty one different imperiled animals. Then, upload a photo of your own or choose a sample photo from our gallery of people and animals.

Finally, watch as the face you chose gradually transforms into your chosen animal. And if you like the results, you can save your morph and send it to your friends and family (and even post it on your website, blog or MySpace page)!

Here’s Baby Kelly morphing into a chimp. You can see the original photo on Flickr, where it was uploaded as part of my Bush Babies series (“Wow! Brazil is big!”).

Speaking of GW, here’s the obligatory Bush-or-Chimp? morph. Dunno how long the good Defenders will leave that one up, so you might have to create your own.
