PET FOOD RECALL UPDATE: YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT HOMEMADE DIETS

With the list of recalled foods expanded to include certain products containing rice protein concentrate, the ASPCA has received numerous inquiries from concerned caretakers regarding the safety of homemade diets. In response to your questions, ASPCA toxicologists and veterinarians urge pet parents to fully research homemade diets before pulling out the chef’s hat–and we continue to encourage all caretakers to regularly visit the ASPCA Pet Food Recall Resource Center for the latest updates on the crisis.

Although a federal judge’s recent ruling has temporarily halted the slaughter of horses for human consumption, Illinois, home to one
of our nation’s few remaining horse slaughterhouses, must pass HB 1711 to make the victory permanent. We’re one big step closer
to success, as earlier this week the bill passed the House and now heads for the Senate.

FEDERAL: THE DOWNED ANIMAL & FOOD SAFETY PROTECTION ACT

The risk of tainted meat entering our food supply increases when downed animals are allowed to be slaughtered for human consumption. Contact your U.S. representative and senators now and urge them to protect both livestock and human health by supporting S. 394 and H.R. 661.
