Urgent: Bills to Ban Horse Slaughter Need a Push through Congress

Ask your elected officials to support important legislation to save equines today!

In our February 7th eNewsletter, we reported that two important bills to end horse slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. had been reintroduced to Congress. Since then, these two pieces of legislation — the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA) and the Rahall/Whitfield amendment — have been steadily wending their way through the legislative process. Congress is scheduled to review both of these bills this week, so animal advocates can help ensure their passage by urging their federal legislators to support them.

1) The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 311): On April 25th, the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will hold a mark-up for their version of the AHSPA (S. 311) during which committee members will decide on the language of the measure they expect to send on to the full Senate. Please “Take Action” to urge all committee members to vote in favor of the AHSPA and encourage Senate leadership to move the bill swiftly to the full Senate for consideration. Also follow up with a polite letter, phone call, or fax. If your own Senator is on the committee, it is especially important that you contact him/her directly. Find out the names and contact information for your Senators and then see if either of them is a member of the committee.

2) The Rahall/Whitfield amendment (H.R. 249): Members of the House of Representatives will have an opportunity to take a stand against the slaughter of wild horses when H.R. 249 comes up for a vote on Thursday, April 26th. Please “Take Action” to urge your Representative to vote Yes on this bill that would restore protections for wild horses. Also follow up with a polite letter, phone call, or fax. Get contact information for your Representative.
