Dear Governor Schweitzer, Dr. Rankin and Ms. Lewis:

Please consider me part of the escalating public outrage over plans to roundup and slaughter roughly 300 Yellowstone bison, including newborn calves. I respectfully implore the Governor to uphold his campaign vow of lenience for Montana’s bison and urge the Acting State Veterinarian to abandon this hostile approach to wildlife management.

I understand Montana’s Department of Livestock already erected a bison trap on state grounds close to West Yellowstone airport, but temporarily suspended capture due to public opposition. Please do not resume the roundup and kill plan next week. The government’s taxpayer-funded war on our last migrating buffalo herd must end.

Brucellosis, a European livestock disease, is the apparent rationale behind the continual harassment, quarantine, and massacre of buffalo. Yet there are no documented cases of wild buffalo transmitting brucellosis directly to cows. Elk, believed to spread brucellosis, are not systematically herded and killed. They roam freely, as the buffalo should.

Wildlife and park agencies ought to do their job: Safeguard the free-roaming buffalo herd. It is the responsibility of the livestock industry to practice cattle-based risk management, including vaccination of all livestock against brucellosis.

I cannot support tourism in Montana until officials protect wild buffalo rather than track and kill them. The estimated 50 million buffalo who once ranged public lands have dwindled to less than 3,500. It is irresponsible to let Montana’s Department of Livestock shape their fate.

Thank you,
