Kevin Eubanks:
Big zucchini, or world’s biggest zucchini?

Subject: DawnWatch: Jay Leno nominates Kevin Eubanks as sexiest vegetarian 6/15 – 6/19/07

Perhaps you have heard of PETA’s “sexiest vegetarian” contests. They are in line with PETA’s general attempts to put an animal friendly message wherever there is public attention — and for as long as anybody can remember there has been plenty of attention on sex. The competition has leagues for sexiest vegetarian celebrities and also for the tofutti cuties and sultry soy boys next door.

The contests get a lot of press, and thanks to Jay Leno, millions of Americans heard about them over the last week. On the Friday, June 15th Tonight Show, Leno introduced the topic telling us that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking folks to vote for the sexiest vegetarian. He said, “I guessing the winner will be the guy with the biggest zucchini.” Then he said to the Tonight Show’s band leader, Kevin Eubanks, “Hey, Kev, you’re a vegetarian, I should nominate you. We should get people to vote for you.” Then he started teasing Kevin about having photos he shot of him at Pismo beach.

On Monday, June 18, Leno reminded viewers that PETA is looking for the sexiest vegetarian of the year and he said that he had nominated Kevin. And he said, “I want people to go to the PETA website and vote.” (The competition is at www.GoVeg.com )

Greening the intertubes (and the halls of Congress)

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

As promised, a roundup of recent green legislative alerts. So many bills, so little time. Even a link dump feels like heavy lifting.

Audubon: Better Fuel Standards for a Clean Future

The U.S. Senate is debating America’s energy policy, and we need to make sure that any energy legislation includes at least some increase in corporate average fuel economy standards (CAFE), which have not been improved in over 25 years. Raising the fuel economy of cars and trucks reduces our addiction to oil, helps to clear our skies and reduces global warming pollution. This is off-the-shelf technology we have right now, but we need Congress to act.

Please write to your U.S. Senators and tell them to oppose the Levin-Stabenow amendment to weaken the modest CAFE standards in HR 6.

Greenpeace: Put Congressional Leaders in the Hot Seat

When the Democrats took over they promised bold action on global warming. Now halfway through the year and two weeks before the 4th of July recess, it appears that the first major action on energy in the House of Representatives will take us in the wrong direction. Instead of creating an energy bill that solves global warming, the legislation that has emerged thus far protects the auto and coal industry.

Chairmen John Dingell and Rick Boucher are proving to be poor leaders in the important fight to create sensible energy policies and to stop global warming. The chairmen of the House Energy and Commerce Committee are doing just the opposite of what the Democratic majority said they would do—push for smart energy policies and attack global warming head on.

America needs real leadership on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, not more of the same.

Take Action>>Tell Speaker Pelosi to use her power as Speaker of the House and get Congress back on track.

True Majority: Tell Congress – “You’re in the Hot Seat”

It’s now or never for Congress to get serious about global warming. Scientists tell us that if we don’t put a cap on global warming pollution and reduce emissions 80% by 2050 that the situation could become completely out of control. So we’re turning up the heat on Congress and demanding that they support strong action to solve global warming. Help us reach our goal of 50,000 signatures nationally by August by adding your name to the list. Let your Rep. know that “We’re counting on you: You’re in the Hot Seat.”

Union of Concerned Scientists: Our Chance to Raise Fuel Economy Standards is Here!

The average fuel economy of American automobiles hasn’t changed in decades, despite steady advances in vehicle technology. More fuel-efficient cars would give American drivers much-needed savings at the pump while helping to reduce our oil dependence and global warming pollution. Now is our chance to lock-in stronger fuel economy standards for all vehicles! As early as tomorrow, the Senate will vote on an Energy Bill provision that would raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020.

Please call your senators and tell them to support CAFE reform of at least 35 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks by 2020 with no loopholes. Any attempts to weaken this long overdue reform will be a vote for higher gas prices and continued oil dependence.

RAN: Tell Toyota to follow Google’s lead and add plugs to their hybrids!

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Via the Rainforest Action Network:

Tell Toyota to follow Google’s lead and add plugs to their hybrids!

Google has just launched a multi-million dollar investment in plug-in hybrids and technology, but thanks to the foot-dragging of automakers like Toyota, it’s almost impossible for anyone who doesn’t work at Google to get a plug-in car for themselves.
Google plugs in

Automakers have refused to add plugs to their hybrid cars, and so if consumers want a plug-in hybrid, they have to buy a regular hybrid and THEN go through the expensive process of having another company convert their hybrid to a plug-in.

This foot-dragging is especially outrageous because Toyota — supposedly an environmental leader — is one of the main obstacles to the large-scale manufacture of plug-in cars. It’s high time for automakers to hurry up and meet Google in the 21st century by building plug-in hybrids, the best existing solution to gas-powered vehicles.

Let’s get as many people as possible to let Toyota know that the public is demanding plug-in hybrid cars be made available.

Via Earthjustice:

It’s Time to Clean Up Coal Combustion Waste!

Millions of tons of hazardous coal ash are dumped into mines, polluting our drinking water and putting our communities’ health at risk. The federal government is considering now whether it should finally take action on how to dispose of toxic waste.

Let them know that we want the strongest protections against this pollution!

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has the opportunity to listen to the most recent scientific studies by the National Research Council and adopt enforceable standards for all states to meet when they allow coal combustion waste to be dumped into coal mines.

Please act now and send the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement your comments through June 22nd!

IDA Writing Alert: Elephant euthanized at Wild Animal Park

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

While reading through the article, this sentence jumped right out at me: “In the early 1990s, the zoo stopped chaining the animals and allowed them to roam freely at night.”

Early ’90s, you say? How progressive. Not. Seriously, you want kudos for unchaining your elephants in the 1990s? That’s like the World Health Organization bragging that they no longer consider homosexuality a mental disorder…as of 1992. (Even the APA was late to the party…in 1973.) Bully for you!

Elephant euthanized at Wild Animal Park

North County Times – Escondido,Calif.
By: PAUL EAKINS – Staff Writer

SAN PASQUAL VALLEY — A North County celebrity who appeared on “The Tonight Show” with the late Johnny Carson and whose feats of strength and agility kept crowds in awe has died.

But critics say the death could have been prevented.

Carol, a 39-year-old Asian elephant, was euthanized because of health problems Tuesday at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park east of Escondido, zoo officials said.

Officials said euthanasia was the “humane” thing to do, but wildlife advocates said Tuesday the animal should have been sent to an elephant sanctuary instead. At a sanctuary, advocates said, the elephant might have recovered from the illnesses they say were caused by poor treatment at the animal park.

In August, 2006 concerned animal lovers like you flooded the Mayor of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Animal Services offices with emails, calls and faxes to save Stu from a planned “euthanasia” for haphazardly being declared a “dangerous dog.” Please, I need your help again.

Stu is still alive a year after he was supposed to be killed because LAAS and Ed Boks believe the experts report that Stu was not dangerous.

But on June 18, 2007, Stu had his day in court again… I’m sorry to say the our petition for a Writ to overturn the City’s ruling was denied this morning by the most erratic, rude and belligerent judge my attorney has ever encountered. I am preparing an appeal to the California Supreme Court to overturn Judge Yaffe who has been overturned before for such reckless disposition of the law.

Legally, they can kill Stu at any moment. I am writing an informal notice of appeal which I will deliver to L.A.A.S tomorrow asking them to keep him alive until a formal stay can be granted.

I am not finished trying to save him. At this point any letters of support to the department and the Mayor of L.A. would be appreciated.

Defenders of Wildlife: Stop the Poisoning of the American Prairie

Via Defenders of Wildlife:

Stop the Poisoning of the American Prairie

Last fall, more than 35,000 activists like you sent comments asking the Forest Service to stop the massacre of tens of thousands of prairie dogs on our National Grasslands.

Prairie dogs provide food for eagles, hawks, badgers, swift fox, endangered black-footed ferrets and other Great Plains predators. Prairie dog burrows provide shelter for burrowing owls, salamanders, black-footed ferrets and many other creatures.

But the Forest Service wants to use your tax dollars to poison and kill tens of thousands of these furry critters and destroy the vital habitat prairie dogs create in our National Grasslands.

Take action now — write the Forest Service and urge them to stop the prairie dog massacre.

Campaign for America’s Wilderness: Help protect the Roan Plateau from irresponsible drilling!

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Via Campaign for America’s Wilderness:

Help protect the Roan Plateau from irresponsible drilling!

The Roan Plateau is a beautifully varied landscape of wide meadows, deep canyons, and gentle trout streams. Located in northwest Colorado, the plateau hosts aspen and spruce forests, towering cliffs, and dramatic waterfalls. The Roan Plateau attracts visitors for camping, sightseeing, world class deer and elk hunting, and backcountry fly fishing. But with your help, we can save the spectacular Roan Plateau. Tell your representative to vote for a funding limitation amendment that would postpone irresponsible oil and gas drilling for one year so a plan to protect the wilderness values of the area can be developed.

nullTiny Violin Alert!: You know the, erm, “drill” – if you use the sample letter, cut out the part about how “drilling atop the plateau would ‘displace’ hunting and fishing outfitters who use the Roan”. Boohoo. I think I’ll save my concern for the fish y’all (they’all?) “displace” from their streams, thanks.

Shane Worships the Wiener

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Not that I blame him, when said wiener looks this good.

2004-08-06 - RalphieBikini-006

Yes, our wiener dog sure is some kind of stud. Yes, I said “dog”. Now get your mind out of the gutter, ya perve.

Seriously, though, Shane has taken up penning poetry dedicated to our canines in his spare time. Which is totally awesome – I love critter lit! Doubly so when it’s dedicated to my very own furbabies.

So here’s Shane, worshiping Ralphie the wiener dog. More gratuitous wiener shots after the flip. (What? Throw enough “wiener-minus-the-dog” phrases in there, and the traffic on this post will, errr, “shoot” through the roof. Come for the porn, stay for the animal rights activism?)

Ralphie

2004-01-11 - RalphieTire2-010

He never sees a hole not to dig
He never stops his breakfast jig
His bark is loud, constant, and deep
He gives us so many memories to keep

His snout slightly grayed and covered in mud
His body, long and lean, a true canine stud
He loves to sleep , curl up and snore
Taking care of him is never a chore

He loves to take walks, and trot along
He’s great on a leash, never does wrong
Just say “Walk” and that tail wags
His nose to the ground, he never lags

He grunts, and snarls, to rule the home
He’s the king of where he roams
Sitting on the top of his sofa throne
Keeping all away from his treasure bone

Then at night, he runs on ahead
In the room, up the ramp, onto bed
He puts his head down for a dream
As quiet and content as he ever seems

He softly barks at dreamland prey
Never catching what he sees every day
We always smile at Ralphie at rest
Of all our dogs, he sleeps the best

DawnWatch: Alaska’s elephant Maggie to be moved — Edmonton’s Lucy soon to be alone 6/15/07

Subject: DawnWatch: Alaska’s elephant Maggie to be moved — Edmonton’s Lucy soon to be alone 6/15/07

(DawnWatch subscribers: You haven’t heard from me for a few days because my dear old computer suffered a heart attack last week and is still in Intensive Care. Though he is expected to recover, I can no longer avoid admitting that it is time for him to retire. Loyal to the last, he will be back at work this coming week in order to tie up loose ends and train his successor. I will then be able to respond to the emails that have piled up over the last week or so. Meanwhile, today I will do the best that I can, without my computer’s full resources, to do a little DawnWatch catching up.)

A recent story important to many of us concerns Maggie, the elephant who lives alone at the Alaska Zoo. I first learned of her plight from a heartbreaking cover story about her, by Robert Meyerowitz, printed in the February 12 2005 Anchorage Press. The Elephant Sanctuary still has that article on its website at www.elephants.com/pr/2_17_05_AnchoragePress.htm. I strongly recommend reading it. It tells us, “In 1983, a Zimbabwe cull left five baby elephants watching on grassy plains as all the adults in their herds, all the elephants they’d ever known, were cut down around their ears.” The baby elephants were flown to the US, and Maggie was brought to Alaska to accompany the lone elephant there named Annabelle. When Annabelle died, Maggie was left alone. Because of the climate, Maggie spends much of her life inside a heated barn. When activists complained that she desperately needed exercise and should be released to a sanctuary where she would have acres on which to roam
with other elephants, the zoo’s solution was to design an elephant-sized treadmill for her.

The movement to free Maggie received renewed media attention in May this year, when twice in on one week Maggie lay down and was unable to stand up until local firefighters intervened to lift her. Finally, the Alaska Zoo Board has agreed to let Maggie go to a better facility with a warmer climate. Whether that will be a sanctuary or just a somewhat better zoo has not been announced.

Defenders of Wildlife: A Rockin’ Way to Help Wildlife!

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Via Defenders of Wildlife:

A Rockin’ Way to Help Wildlife!

It was music to my ears: On Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Committee passed H.R. 2337, legislation that would offer a crucial lifeline to polar bears, monk seals and other wildlife threatened by global warming.

Now we need your help to ensure that this important bill becomes law… and we’re pulling out all the stops to address global warming and save wildlife. Here are two things you can do right now to help…

1. Take Action.

Urge your Representative to support H.R. 2337, vital energy and climate change legislation. This bill would create a much-needed national strategy to help polar bears, monk seals, sea turtles and other wildlife survive and adapt to global warming’s impacts.

2. Spread the Word.

Send our free e-card to 3 friends to encourage them to take action to save wildlife, and you will be entered for a chance to win 2 tickets to see the The Police, Melissa Etheridge, Kelly Clarkson, Kanye West and more at the historic July 7th Live Earth concert to raise awareness about global warming. You can learn more about Live Earth on the concert’s website.*

Why are we giving away concert tickets to one lucky winner and a guest? Because global warming is a clear and present danger to our wildlife, and Defenders of Wildlife needs to engage as many wildlife supporters as possible before Congress heads home for its July 4th recess.

KEEP DOG MURDER IN JAIL – GIVE HIM THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE

Our loving, young pet Mimi, a very small, chi was murdered by a man named Frank on Tuesday afternoon. Frank took our little dog and slit her throat then threw her over his back fence. Thanks to the excellent, diligent work of the Novato Police Department, Frank was arrested and is in jail with a over $100,000 bail. This man took the life of our family member, a dog that gave nothing but love to all that she met. She made our family laugh everyday with her antics. Her best friend was Ty the big black Great Dane, who is now moping around the house looking for his little friend. When I found my dog with her throat cut, ants crawling on her body, blood coming out of her ears, my belief that every human being has some level of basic kindness, died in that moment. Who is this man, whatever reason he has for committing this act, this is a sick person who does not belong in our society. He should be listed as a predator, just like sex offenders. Living Graves

We are the living graves of murdered beasts,
Slaughtered to satisfy our appetites.
We never pause to wonder at our feasts,
If animals, like men, can possibly have rights.
We pray on Sundays that we may have light,
To guide our footsteps on the path we tread.
We’re sick of war, we do not want to fight -
The thought of it now fills our hearts with dread,
And yet – we gorge ourselves upon the dead.

Living Graves (PETA2)

Like carrion crows we live and feed on meat,
Regardless of the suffering and the pain
we cause by doing so, if thus we treat
defenceless animals for sport or gain,
how can we hope in this world to attain,
the PEACE we say we are so anxious for.
We pray for it o’er hecatombs of slain,
to God, while outraging the moral law,
thus cruelty begets its offspring – WAR.

- George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

Chicago Update: Lawsuit Rejected; Repeal Ordinance Introduced

On Tuesday, June 12, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Illinois Restaurant Association (IRA) to overturn Chicago’s foie gras ban. U.S. District Judge Blanche Manning summed up her 26-page ruling by stating, “Chicago’s ban of foie gras sales in restaurants does not exceed the City’s home rule powers or violate the dormant Commerce Clause. Thus, the Ordinance does not violate the Illinois or United States Constitutions.” Read more.

Zoop in Top Form for ZOOP!

What would ZOOP! A Benefit for Farm Sanctuary be without Zoop, a favorite friendly veteran of Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter goat barn? Fortunately, we won’t have to find out. The benefit concert, featuring indie musician John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, will be held this weekend bringing more than 200 people out to the farm to listen to great music and hang out with the animals. After a tough spring that saw her battle myriad health problems, Zoop is ready for the weekend guests—and the rest of her life. Read more.

About Farm Sanctuary

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. For more information about Farm Sanctuary or our programs, please visit www.farmsanctuary.org or call 607-583-2225.
