1. Cats Outlived Katrina, But Now Face Desertion

SOURCE: RAMONA BILLOT, ramonabillot [at] yahoo.com

7/9/07, from ramonabillot [at] yahoo.com — A colony of roughly 25 cats face life with no caregiver by the end of July. Their wonderful guardian Janice — who maintains this colony at the state facility in Belle Chasse, LA (Plaquemines Parish) where she’s employed — will be blocked from the property as it closes to await new tenants. Once closed, no one can set foot on the grounds, even to feed the cats.

We have no idea how long these cats will wait and wait and wait… We are desperate to remove them before the facility it closes.

They relied upon Janice for the last 10 YEARS and survived Katrina. They do not deserve to suffer without food or a caregiver.

PLEASE HELP OR FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO SOMEONE WHO CAN:
- We need a sanctuary or individual with ample property willing to take the cats and temporarily confine them for adjustment before release.
- All cats are spayed, neutered and healthy.

3. Can You Help A Once Loved Pet, Cast Out By Katrina?

Kinship Circle - 2007-07-07 - 01 - Sassy

CAN YOU HELP SASSY?
Contact: Ramona Billot, ramonabillot [at] yahoo.com

7/5/07, from ramonabillot [at] yahoo.com — Sassy survived hurricane Katrina and lived inside a crushed store in Empire, Louisiana (Plaquemines Parish) until recently. About a month ago, the building she inhabited for almost 2 years was suddenly demolished.

Sassy lost her home for the second time in the last 2 years, and needs a safe place where she’ll never have to worry about howling winds, dodging 30 feet of water for 6 weeks, or starvation…

Kinship Circle - 2007-07-07 - 02 - Sassy

Sassy’s “home” before rescue

Sassy also needs someone willing to work with her and help her trust people again. She is very sweet and begs to be petted, but will swat with claws extended if you reach toward her face with your hand. I’m only able to pet her quickly when she rubs against my legs or furniture… Sassy was spayed when I found her. I truly believe she was a loved pet who is very traumatized and just needs to know she is safe and cared for.

Sassy is not ready to be put up for adoption. I am looking for someone in rescue willing to take her and work with her, or possibly accept her into a sanctuary environment.

This is an urgent situation.

We are in HURRICANE SEASON here and if I have to evacuate, I have 8 pets of my own and it will be extremely difficult to evacuate with Sassy and put her through the stress of a new environment. I am afraid she’d really digress if put into a stressful situation like an evacuation.

CAN YOU HELP SASSY?

5. Jefferson Parish Shelter Desperately Needs Volunteers

Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, www.petfinder.com/shelters/LA73.html

The Animal Shelter Department for Jefferson Parish (Louisiana) Operates two open-admission animal shelters at:

1. Jefferson Parish East Bank Animal Shelter
#1 Humane Way in East Jefferson near Elmwood
Jefferson, LA 70123
504-736-6111; nbriscoe [at] jeffparish.net

2. Jefferson Parish West Bank Animal Shelter
1869 Ames Blvd. in Marrero
504-349-5111

7/11/07, from Bert Claverie, claverie [at] cox.net — I went to the East Bank Shelter on Monday and the conditions at the shelter were pretty bad. I witnessed exactly what is described below. Lee Ann and I spent several hours cleaning and working to get things in order and there were still many animals that were left unattended to. I am begging and pleading for any help anyone can give to help the poor cats and kittens living in the heat and without being well cared for. Read below. Thank you, Bert C. **This is for the Jefferson Parish Shelter on the East Bank of the river. All you locals please please pass the word around.

From Peggy Malouse, IrishEyes681 — [Situation at Jefferson Parish East Bank Shelter]: There were cat cages that had not been cleaned or given fresh food and water in 2 days. There were very small kittens who were only given dry food (which they are not old enough to eat) and they were starving. Lee Ann has made sure that the young kittens and sick cats are now getting wet food.

If you can only spare an hour or two to help, the animals need it desperately. Please forward this to anyone you think might be able to help. A member of the Jefferson Parish Animal Task force has contacted Aaron Broussard personally to advise him the shelter needs IMMEDIATE assistance.

7/11/07, forwarded by Maria Kinney mjkinney [at] bellsouth.net, Julie writes — As many of you know, the [Jefferson Parish Shelter on the East Bank of the river] lost several employees after the March incident that left 13 dogs dead. The new shelter director, Lee Ann Matherne, starts on July 23. In the meantime, Beverly Williams is acting director and Lee Ann makes frequent visits to the shelter to start her mission.

They have put out a call for help and we are asking any volunteers who can help out at the animal shelter (cleaning cages, scooping litterboxes, feeding/watering, whatever), to please call Elena Jones at 504-736-6111.

Kinship Circle - 2007-07-12 - 01 - Pit Bull

This dog was found in the vicinity of Chef Menteur and America St. - New Orleans East - and transported to LA/SPCA. She is off the street, but her offspring will be having more puppies soon. SO SAD.

Also, Pit Bull (no photo) in the backyard of 14,5-hundred block of Duane has one side of face severely injured.

Dear Council and Mayor:

Something needs to be done about folks returning and breeding Pit Bulls (and other animals, for that matter) indiscriminately and needlessly. The majority, if not all, of these folks have no good plans for the offspring, who often end up as strays, for Pit Bull bait or to fight. It is an embarrassment to the parish. You guys, as leaders of the Parish of Orleans, need to take action to stop New Orleans from getting back to “normal” in this aspect. We ask that you make this a priority in your agendas.

In an excerpt from a LA/SPCA immediate release newsletter in Nov. 05:

Next Steps
There is still much work to be done. To take advantage of New Orleans’ unique opportunity to get a grasp on its stray population, the LA/SPCA will contract with a high-volume, experienced humane trapper being provided by the Humane Society of the United States to manage a comprehensive 4-6 week program. Both national and local groups are willing to provide staff and volunteer trappers that will be trained and dispatched from Animal Control.

Sincerely,
Maria Alvarez, Stewardship For Strays

SLIDE SHOW OF REUNION: www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2oZLLRAMuo

Kinship Circle - 2007-07-12 - 02 - Tigger

Nearly two years after their separation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, 9-year-old Taylor Morales is cuddling once again with her prized cat Tigger. The cat’s microchip is credited with bringing the two back together. Photo by Christopher’s Photography, Metairie, LA

6/29/07, By Cathy Scott, Best Friends Staff — Tigger, who was about two years old when Katrina hit, was rescued in mid-September 2005 from St. Bernard Parish by a Best Friends’ rapid response team. The tabby was taken to a base camp set up by Best Friends on the grounds of the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary outside of New Orleans.

Earlier, Taylor’s father, David Morales, had driven to Delacroix Island, ahead of the storm. He was a fisherman and wanted to secure his boat. The rest of the family stayed behind and packed a few belongings. During their haste to evacuate, Tigger hid either in or outside the house and was separated from the family. The Moraleses did not live in a flood-plain zone and expected, like many residents, to return in a couple days and find their cat there waiting for them.

As it turned out, extensive flooding destroyed the Morales’ home and everything in it. Weeks later, when the family was able to go home, they found Tigger’s paw prints on their sofa, but Tigger was gone. Thus began their lengthy search.

Meanwhile, Best Friends had placed Tigger with a rescue group that, in turn, put him in a foster home with a family. He was safe, but the Moraleses didn’t know it yet.

Because of the lack of electricity and lack of resources in the early days of the rescue effort, it wasn’t known that Tigger had a microchip (a permanent identification chip that’s injected just below the skin).

Eventually, however, through a lost-and-found pet database listing photos and information, the family learned that Best Friends had rescued a cat that resembled Tigger. Tigger was scanned, the microchip registered in Taylor’s name was confirmed and plans began to reunite Tigger with his family. The case was similar to one earlier this year, when a small dog named Pablo was reunited with his person after Best Friends took the case to court to have the pet returned to his legal owner.

“It’s important that Taylor had him chipped,” said Russ Mead, general counsel for Best Friends. “Once he was scanned, it made it very easy to find out he belongs to Taylor.”

Once the news of Tigger’s imminent return reached Taylor, who had slept with Tigger every night prior to the storm, she cleaned her room and prepared for the homecoming.

Taylor was at the airport, waiting for Tigger, on June 15 when he arrived. Tigger’s carrier was unzipped, he poked his head out and Taylor cupped her hands around his face. She then lifted him in her arms. Tigger was, indeed, home again.
