National Alert: Save Dogs from Dying This Summer

2005-08-07 - MyDogIsCool-0008

Every year, countless dogs die after being left in cars in hot weather. These deaths are entirely preventable. Many people simply don’t realize how quickly a closed car can become a death trap for a companion animal. Already this summer a number of incidents have made headlines across the country, highlighting the often tragic consequences of bringing a beloved companion along for the ride.

To combat this tragic trend API’s national campaign My Dog is Cool works to save animal lives each summer through education and public service announcements.

You can help API save the lives of dogs in your area by taking a few easy actions to educate people on how quickly a car can heat up in hot weather, even in the shade, and even with the windows open a crack — and why it’s never cool to leave a dog in hot car.

Please work with API to make this season a safe one for companion animals and their families.

National Alert: Protect Primates from the Exotic Pet Trade

A bill that will protect primates from the perils of the exotic “pet” trade is now pending in the House and the Senate. H.R.2964/S.1498 (The Captive Primate Safety Act) will amend the Lacey Act Amendments of 1981 to include nonhuman primates as a prohibited wildlife species under the Act. It will thus outlaw the interstate and foreign commerce of these animals for use as “pets.” This bill will help reduce the number of animals that suffer from neglect and abuse at the mercy of the exotic “pet”
trade.

Please contact your federal legislators today and ask that they support this crucial piece of legislation.
