USDA’s Downed Cattle Ban Now Permanent

The USDA recently made permanent its prohibition on slaughtering downed cattle for human food. The interim policy was first instituted at the end of 2003 after a downed cow in the U.S. was confirmed to have mad cow disease. We are very pleased that this ban is now permanent, but still concerned that other downed animals, including pigs, can be transported and slaughtered for human food. We are also uneasy that the downed animal ban allows too much leeway in the case of downed veal calves, whom it allows to be set aside and held for treatment and re-inspection. Farm Sanctuary maintains the position we have held since 1986–namely, that downed animals should not be transported and slaughtered for human food, and that the industry should be required to take better care of the animals to prevent them from going down in the first place. Jayne’s gone swimming

Between the new house (renovations on which are slowly starting to wrap up), the impending move across town, and the new workload I’m trying to take on to pay for it all, spare time for blogging has been tight. So, for the time being, easyVegan will be on a semi-vacation. Not that your trusty blogger will be getting much rest. No siree. I’ll just be sacrificing my metacarpals to my corporate overlords rather than the greater good, at least for the foreseeable future. Sigh.

So what does this mean for easyVegan the blog? Well, I’ll continue to bring you all the rage-inducing action alerts of days past, but rather than create a separate, detailed post for each issue, methinks I’ll post a “link roundup” every day or two instead. This near-daily link dump will consist of (links to) animal rights/welfare and enviro action alerts, petitions, newsletters, carnivals, press releases, and campaign updates (etc., etc.) that have already been published on the internets. I will, however, continue to reprint emails that have not otherwise been reprinted online (the Friday Farm Sanctuary newsletter comes to mind). (And of course, news items via delicious!)

I expect the new setup to continue until at least October, though I have a sneaking suspicion that I just might like it enough to stick with it fur-ever. Hopefully, once I’m all snuggled into the new digs, I can use my free time to write some original content as opposed to re-editing, re-formatting, and re-gurgitating everyone else’s stuff. That’s the plan, anyway.

DawnWatch, while not officially on a break, will not be functioning at full throttle this week or next. (The final of my book is due next week! I will be telling you more about it before it comes out early next year.) I will only be able to send occasional news updates over the next couple of weeks.

The story that is impossible to ignore this week is the indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. He is charged with dogfighting, a felony, and with other hideous crimes that traditionally accompany it. I will share some of the coverage below and encourage you to respond. At the very least, please vote in the ESPN and NY1 polls.

“Losers allegedly didn’t fare too well with Michael Vick. His pit bulls were often summarily executed after losing fights, according to a federal indictment that portrays a disturbing picture of animal cruelty.

“In April, just before authorities raided his property in rural Virginia, the Falcons’ star quarterback was there ‘rolling’ some of his pit bulls — that is, putting them through test fights to see if they were ‘game,’ federal authorities said.

“Eight of the animals didn’t make the cut, and were executed by Vick and two co-defendants by ‘hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground,’ authorities allege.

Urge Your Representative to Conserve Fish and Ocean Ecosystems

In January, Congress responded to public pressure from citizens like you and passed a strong new law [the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act] to end overfishing and put ocean wildlife on a course toward healthy population levels. But without strong rules from the National Marine Fisheries Service, the federal agency responsible for enforcing the new law, Congress’ action will be meaningless.

Send a message to your representative asking him or her to sign on to a letter calling on the National Marine Fisheries Service to enact strong new rules to protect fish and fishermen by ensuring sustainable fish populations through well-informed decision-making.

The Representative must consider the issue and sign the letter on or before Friday the 20th, so time is of the essence. Thanks for your help!

PLEASE HELP PROTECT WHALES AND DOLPHINS FROM DEADLY SONAR

We need your help to urge the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce to deny permission to the U.S. Navy to use its dangerous Low Frequency Active (LFA) Sonar systems in the world’s oceans. As you may recall, under a court order and resultant settlement, the Navy is currently only permitted to use this extremely loud active sonar in a limited area of the Pacific Ocean.

Now, the Navy wants to double the number of platforms that use LFA sonar, and to deploy it across vast ocean basins throughout the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. The NMFS is poised to issue a rulemaking that will allow the Navy to use the LFA as it pleases for the next five years.
