National Alert: Update: “Guess?” to Drop Fur in 2008

API would like to thank all of you who joined activists around the world in writing letters to Guess? and urging the company to go fur free. This international effort has resulted in a recent announcement by Guess? that it will phase out fur — it will no longer buy fur after September 2007, and will stop selling fur in stores by April 2008.

Guess? is a multinational clothing chain headquartered in Los Angeles. With about 800 stores in over 60 countries around the world, Guess?’s influence on the international fur trade is considerable.

While Guess?’s announcement is significant, there is still more it can do to show consumers that it is truly committed to ending its role in the horrendous cruelty involved in fur fashion. Now is the time to urge Guess? to put its fur free commitment in writing — by signing on to the Fur Free Retail program — and to ask that it not spend even one more season trading in animal lives.

National Alert: API Helps Make San Francisco Coyote-Friendly — Try It in Your Community

Recently two coyotes were shot to death in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park after the coyotes, a male and a female, attacked two domestic dogs in the park. Authorities later learned that someone had been feeding the coyotes daily in the park, which likely led to the aggressive attack. Feeding coyotes causes the animals to lose their natural fear of humans leading to abnormal aggressive behavior.

With the help of API, San Francisco Animal Care and Control has embarked on a major public education campaign to teach residents how to coexist with coyotes. They began by ordering 2,000 of API’s coyote doorhangers to educate residents surrounding the park. But they did not stop there. Using information from API, the agency is developing its own PSA and will be including information about coexisting with coyotes in the city water bills and voter registration materials. In addition, API is
assisting the agency in developing “Be Coyote Aware” signs and posters for use in the city and around the parks.

Together we are working to make San Francisco coyote-friendly. You can do the same in your community, and API is here to offer assistance.
