Dear Mr. Passalacqua,

I thank the Sonoma County District Attorney for pursuing felony animal cruelty charges against two teenage girls who set fire to a feral kitten in Santa Rosa on June 21, 2007.

While I am aware California law forbids disclosure of juvenile proceedings, please know I fully support your prosecution of the girls accused of burning “Adam.” This kitten has undergone skin grafts and reconstruction of his rectal area, simply because disturbed teens amused themselves with his torture.

If the accused are convicted, please advocate the maximum three years of confinement. Both teens should undergo psychological counseling and be barred from possessing or living with animals. I urge you to forego any plea bargains that reduce the crime to a misdemeanor with slap-on-the-wrist penalties.

When our society and its courts excuse fundamental cruelty because victims are deemed undeserving of our mercy, our mindset reflects worlds where bloodshed and genocide are possible. As you know, the intensity of vicious behavior — regardless of the victim’s identity — is a forerunner to more violence.

Indeed, adolescent pranks that victimize animals are a known precursor to aggressive crimes. Columbine shooter Eric Harris, 18, smashed mice with a crowbar and set them on fire. Washington D.C. serial killer Lee Boyd Malvo killed stray cats with a slingshot. Kip Kinkle blew up a cow and burned a live cat. He then shot 25 classmates and murdered his parents in Springfield, Oregon. Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson, both 13, brutalized dogs before killing five people in an Arkansas school rampage.

Randall Lockwood, Ph.D. — regularly enlisted to aid cruelty investigators, law enforcers, court officials and mental health professionals — identifies violence against small or non-threatening creatures as a precursor to assaulting children, the elderly or disabled, and other vulnerable victims.

No one is more helpless than a domesticated animal, especially a stray kitten.

These girls pose a risk to other animals and humans in your community. At the very least, each requires extensive probation with behavioral rehabilitation and juvenile hall time. Please keep me informed of any progress in this case.

Thank you,
