…and he was to become eligible for euthanasia after a three-day stay.

You know, like incarcerated canines.

If only. *

Anyway, that’s enough for Vick-related alerts tonight. You can view an extensive archive here.

IDA: Urge Atlanta Falcons to Kick Vick Off of the Team

Urge Atlanta Falcons to Kick Vick Off of the Team; NFL star pleads guilty to dogfighting charges but remains on Falcons’ roster

Photo via macwagen

Standing before a U.S. District Court Judge in a Richmond courthouse today, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pled guilty to federal charges of conspiring to run an illegal dogfighting operation over the last six years out of his Virginia home. In hearing his plea, the judge emphasized that he is not legally obligated to follow the prosecutors’ reduced sentencing recommendations, and that he could send Vick to prison for up to five years. Vick’s sentencing is scheduled for December 10th.

Even though the NFL has suspended Vick indefinitely from play and may eventually ban him from the league for good, the Atlanta Falcons have chosen not to sever their ties with the disgraced athlete. The reason, according to team owner Arthur Blank, is that cutting Vick from the team is “not in the long-term best interests of (the) franchise.”

Yet the fact remains that Michael Vick has finally admitted to a serious criminal offense after weeks of denial during which he essentially lied to Blank, his teammates, football fans, and the public. Considerations about what is best for Atlanta Falcons, Inc. pale before Vick’s ongoing abuse and murder of innocent dogs. Regardless of how much money is at stake in ending his lucrative contract, Blank needs to do the right thing, which in this case is cutting Vick from the team now.

Michael Vick Pleads Guilty & Suspended Indefinitely!

Michael Vick entered a guilty plea this morning to conspiracy charges in Federal Court in Richmond, Virginia after being suspended indefinitely from the NFL on Friday. Federal prosecutors recommended a 12-18 months sentence.

The plea agreement stated that he took part in an illegal, interstate dog-fighting enterprise. In documents filed Vick said he knew dogs that did not perform well were killed. He said the fights involved gambling although he did not personally place bets. To read the full text of the plea submitted by Michael Vick on Friday click here.

Judge Hudson scheduled the sentencing hearing for Michael Vick for December 10 and stated he will take the prosecutors recommendations under consideration.

Michael Vick last week was also suspended indefinitely from the NFL. In a statement from the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that Vick’s admitted conduct was “not only illegal but also cruel and reprehensible”.

Please contact the commissioners of the major professional sports leagues and urge them to update their personal conduct guidelines by including animal abuse in their prohibited conduct policy! Sample text see below.

ASPCA: Michael Vick Pleads Guilty/ASPCA President Invites Letters of Thanks

From: ASPCA – website [at] aspca.org

Subject: Michael Vick Pleads Guilty/ASPCA President Invites Letters of Thanks

Dear ASPCA Members and Supporters:

With Michael Vick today appearing in federal court to file his plea in the federal dog fighting case that has been pending since July, I wanted to let you know directly that today we revealed our role in the federal investigation: ASPCA Forensic Veterinarian, Dr. Melinda Merck, participated in the excavation of the graves, and examination of the remains.

It has been an honor for the ASPCA to assist federal authorities in this case. We are also extremely proud to be working with the National Football League to raise public awareness of the humane treatment of animals. The NFL took strong, swift and decisive action against Michael Vick on Friday by suspending him indefinitely without pay.

Please join the ASPCA in sending a message of support to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Inspector General, USDA, letting them know that their efforts are not going unnoticed: www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty_letters.

DawnWatch: Michael Vick case spurs comments on other animal cruelty 8/22 — 8/26/07

From: DawnWatch – news [at] dawnwatch.com

Subject: DawnWatch: Michael Vick case spurs comments on other animal cruelty 8/22 — 8/26/07

It has been another of those weeks in which I was unable to focus on DawnWatch, so I now find myself playing some catch-up on the weekend. I start by noting that on Wednesday, Aug 22, the Los Angeles Times published five fabulous animal advocacy letters in response to last week’s front page story on the random killing for kicks of farm animals. The letters discussed various aspects of animal cruelty, including dogfighting, the circus and the meat industry. The following letter, from Pat Sommer, reminds us what can happen when we close our hearts to the suffering of others:

“I do not fear evil; I fear apathy. For a decent society to overlook base cruelty because it is directed at those we consider unworthy of our pity shakes me to the core; I am German and live with the legacy of that mind-set. May God forgive us.”

I send a huge thank you to all who wrote and were therefore part of the effort that resulted in a block of five pro-animal letters to the editor on the Los Angeles Times editorial page.

Michael Vick has remained in the spotlight this week. The headline on the front page of the sports section of the Saturday, August 25, New York Times announces, “After Plea, Vick Is Barred Indefinitely By the N.F.L.”

The article opens:

“The National Football League suspended Michael Vick indefinitely without pay yesterday after he admitted in court papers that he paid for dogfighting bets and helped kill underperforming dogs.

“The 27-year-old Vick, the Atlanta Falcons’ star quarterback, will be out for at least the 2007 N.F.L. season and probably much longer. If he serves a year in prison — the sentence recommended in the plea agreement — he will probably not be eligible to play again until 2009.”
