An alarming number of farm animals die regularly in catastrophic highway accidents when the trucks hauling huge loads of these animals overturn. In the past week, the media reported on at least two such incidents, each of which resulted in massive mortality and suffering for the animals involved. Despite this industry-wide problem, neither the U.S. Department of Agriculture nor the agribusiness industry has adequately addressed the issue. As a result, farm animals are subjected to yet another level of unnecessary suffering. Farm Sanctuary is urging the USDA to establish a protocol to prevent these accidents from happening in the first place and to respond to these accidents when they happen in a way that will minimize animal suffering. Nobody knows how long they stood inside the transport trailer, or what condition they were in when they entered. What we do know is how they looked when they emerged. Emaciated. Lice-ridden. Weak and scared. Though Allene, Dorothy and Cathy were in bad shape, their condition was heads above that of the other animals found on a property in central New York this spring. In sum, 43 goats were found dead. Now rehabilitated and nursed back to health, these girls call our New York Shelter home—and are ready to make the most of their second chance at life. Read more.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. Today, Maxine munched on sweet hay in her pen in Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter cattle barn. The young Hereford cow was soaking up the peace and quiet, the tranquility quite a bit different than what she experienced not 72 hours ago, when she ran for her life through the streets of Queens, N.Y. Maxine likely escaped from one of New York City’s many slaughterhouses, auctions or live markets, but, like Joey the goat and Lucky Lady before her, Maxine’s quest for freedom was a rousing success. Within the next few weeks, the U.S. Senate will debate the 2007 Farm Bill, which will set agricultural policy for years to come. The Farm Bill is particularly important for farm animal protection because it contains various measures that address funding for the factory farming industry. Traditionally, Congress has disproportionately allocated funding toward animal factory farms, while leaving fruit and vegetable farmers lacking for support. However, this year, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) is proposing a measure that will rectify this inequality and route money toward produce growers and away from factory animal farm operations. Read more.

As a lady of certain years, Meghan the sheep counts herself a member of an esteemed group found in Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter sheep barn. Two weeks and 250+ emails later, and I’m ba-ack. Kinda, sorta. Blogging will remain sporadic for a bit longer, at least until I get the rest of my crap unpacked. Clearly, I have more stuff than I thought. Anyway, here are all the action alerts, newsletters, and petitions that have gathered in my inbox since the move. I almost deleted them all and started from scratch, but my anal-compulsive tendencies damn did done me in. This should certainly be enough to keep y’all busy ’til the next post, no?
Oh, and from here on out I think I’ll just file these link roundups in the “Action Alerts” and “Quick Links” categories. The dozens upon dozens of categories I was checking off per post was getting a wee bit out of hand.
Consumer’s Union: Recall after recall… Tell Congress we need a product safety agency with real power to protect! So when you think CPSC you think “safety first, not recall later!”
House, that is. Posts will be sporadic to nonexistent (what’s new, right?) for a few weeks while the furbabies and their harried parents get settled in.
