National Alert: Take Action for World Farm Animals Day

Free outreach materials available

World Farm Animals Day is October 2, and the Animal Protection Institute is offering several tools to help you speak out for farmed animals.

Every year billions of animals are raised and killed for human consumption. In the U.S. alone, more than 10 billion land animals are slaughtered annually. (Billions more fish are raised and killed in fish “farms” or are taken from oceans, rivers, and lakes.)

In addition, as API uncovered last year farmed animals are often forced to endure long periods of grueling travel. Our investigation documented the transport of live cows within the U.S. and the transport of pigs from the U.S. to Mexican slaughterhouses.

Animals can legally be transported for up to 28 hours, but this law is rarely if ever enforced. Even if enforced, 28 hours is far too long to assure the well-being of transported farm animals.

California Alert: The Circus Show & Other Atrocities

If you live in Northern California, or may be visiting this coming weekend, API invites you to attend the following event in Sacramento, September 7–9:

“The Circus Show & Other Atrocities” is an art show extravaganza featuring amazing one-of-a-kind art, unique and entertaining live performances, and the longest circus train ever made – by the biggest artists around. This special show is designed to raise awareness of the plight of exotic animals in the circus. Partial proceeds from art sales will benefit animal charities, including API.

Also on display will be the Controversial “Ella PhantzPeril” sculpture, designed by New Yorker cover artist and cartoonist Harry Bliss, depicting a chained and weeping baby elephant with the inscription “See Shackles, Bullhooks, Loneliness — All Under the Big Top.”

With what’s in store, you won’t want to miss the gallery reception on Saturday, September 8, from 5:00pm to 10:00pm.

Minnesota Alert

This alert is sent by the Animal Protection Institute on behalf of Circus Reform Yes

Proposed Amendment Threatens to Derail Circus Ban in Minneapolis

Last month we notified you about an important hearing in Minneapolis on the Animal Protection Amendment, which would prohibit wild animal circuses in Minneapolis.

As you may already know, City Council Members postponed the originally scheduled public hearing due to the tragic I-35W bridge collapse. The hearing is now scheduled for September 12 at 1:00 p.m.

Your attendance at this hearing will play a key role in ending Minneapolis’s endorsement of this cruel and archaic form of “entertainment.”

Your help is also needed regarding a recently introduced circus amendment that directly threatens the protection of animals from inhumane conditions in the circus.

This amendment has been proposed by Council Members Paul Ostrow and Betsy Hodges, and is currently scheduled to be heard the same day as the Animal Protection Amendment. However, your phone calls and emails can help ensure that it is the Animal Protection Amendment that moves forward.
