National Alert: Get Active For Elephants on Elephant Appreciation Day

There’s no time like the present to get active for elephants. Elephant Appreciation Day, a national day to raise awareness for these majestic animals, is Saturday, September 22. What better time to learn more about how you can help improve their lives, and share this knowledge with friends and family in your community.

API currently works on a variety of elephant issues, particularly the plight of elephants in the circus. In fact, API is a key plaintiff in a lawsuit against Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus regarding its treatment of endangered Asian elephants. The lawsuit alleges that the circus violates the Endangered Species Act by abusively training and disciplining elephants with sharp implements such as bullhooks, and by intensively confining and chaining them for prolonged periods.

In captivity, the needs of elephants can never be fully met. It is up to us to advocate for the protection of these elephants, and to work to improve conditions in the wild so that elephants can continue to exist in the natural environments in which they belong.

The Animal Protection Institute offers a variety of resources to help you take action for elephants. So celebrate the elephant on Saturday, and every day of the year.

Alaska/California Alert” Update: Maggie the Elephant Moves to California

Great News! On September 13, the Alaska Zoo board of directors voted unanimously to relocate Maggie the elephant to an elephant sanctuary — the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in San Andreas, CA.

This is fantastic news for Maggie who will soon be leaving a solitary life and cold Alaska winters in favor of milder temperatures, companionship with other elephants, and the many other benefits of life in a true Sanctuary.

PAWS and the Alaska Zoo intend to finalize relocation plans this month, hopefully allowing Maggie to make her move before the Alaska winter sets in. PAWS has agreed to fund the $100,000–$200,000 costs of Maggie’s relocation. Additionally, Bob Barker, of The Price is Right fame, has agreed to donate $750,000 toward her care at PAWS.

Many thanks to everyone who contacted the Zoo board back in May to ask that Maggie be relocated. Your efforts have helped make a wonderful difference for this elephant.
