Act Now to Close Borders to Prevent Slaughter of Horses

A recent Appeals Court decision upholding Illinois’ law banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption has closed down the final horse slaughterhouse in the U.S. Unfortunately, while horse slaughter has been effectively shut down here, the number of horses shipped to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada has more than tripled in the past year. To counteract this, Congress is considering the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 311, H.R. 503), to ensure the ban on horse slaughter and stop the shipment of American horses over U.S. borders for the purpose of slaughtering them for overseas human consumption. Activists of the Month: Shon and Mike Chaffee

When an animal rights publication showed up on the Chaffee’s doorstep about 20 years ago, they had no idea it would contain the motivation they needed to change their lives forever. Today, they are rock solid members of Farm Sanctuary’s Activist Network, tirelessly educating their community about the plight of farm animals and annually organizing our life-saving Walk for Farm Animals fundraiser in Cincinnati, Ohio. Need inspiration? Look no further than the Chaffees’ heart-warming story.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming.
