Why:

Proceeds from the November edition of the monthly drum & bass Dream will benefit The International Fund for Animal Welfare and the right whale. With only 350 right whales remaining, the right whale is poised to follow the fate of the baiji—a white dolphin found off the coast of eastern China, and the first large aquatic mammal driven to virtual extinction since hunting and overfishing killed off the Caribbean monk seal in the 1950s—as legislation that could save the right whale languishes with the Administration. As the primary cause of mortality is vessel strikes, the National Marine Fisheries Service has proposed a Ship Strike Rule, calling for reductions in boat speed limits to 10 knots–an impact of $116 million a year, less than four-hundredths of one percent of the $300 billion East Coast shipping trade. Top scientists all concur that this rule must be enacted in order to save the species. The final rule was expected to be issued in June 2007, yet it remains held by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget—which has offered no public explanation. Lawmakers—including Senator John Kerry, Senator Olympia Snowe, and Senator Edward Kennedy—are joining in the effort to push the Ship Strike Rule forward. Tell your Congressman what you think, get more information at www.ifaw.org, and come out to support the cause on Nov. 16.

FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE, Brenda Shoss: Familiar? This flood is happening RIGHT NOW in the state of Tabasco, in southeastern Mexico. Tabasco’s governor has called the massive flooding “Just like New Orleans.” People and animals stranded atop homes and swimming down streets make the comparison inevitable. 700,000 (and counting) people affected. Similar story, different country? [MORE PRESS PHOTOS BELOW]

YET, WHERE IS THE ANIMAL DISASTER RESPONSE? I’ve scanned the internet and consulted personal rescue contacts for two days now, but have found nothing about local/national/international groups on the scene to aid animals.

Normally, Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Relief brings you a resource directory so we can all network supplies, volunteers and donations for animal victims — as we just did for the California wildfires — but this time we need everyone’s help.

Anyone with leads, links, or contact information — for local, national or international animal aid in Mexico — PLEASE SEND ME WHAT YOU HAVE FOR CIRCULATION ON KINSHIP CIRCLE’S DISASTER NETWORKING EMAIL LIST.

This list was born of Katrina. We’re linked by a spiritual and functional network that drove us (literally and figuratively) to the Gulf Coast. Let’s keep the network alive and do something FOR DOGS, CATS, HORSES, FARM ANIMALS…stranded, starving, afraid…in Mexico’s worst flood in 50 years.

Send any leads, links and/or contact information for local, national, or international animal rescue operations in Mexico’s flood to:
Brenda Shoss, kinshipcircle [at] accessus.net

In the meantime, I’ll keep looking for answers too!
I’m sure some group is there, or mobilized to go…

11/3/07: Cave Dogs Saved From 30 ft. Abyss. Stop More Killing In Ethiopia!
KINSHIP CIRCLE DISASTER VICTIMS SITE:

www.kinshipcircle.org/disasters/

FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE, Brenda Shoss: At AR2007 this summer, I chatted with Dr. Anteneh Roba, the Houston doctor who helped orchestrate the rescue of dogs tossed into a cave to die in Ethiopia. Thanks to Dr. Roba and Homeless Animal Protection Society (HAPS), Ethiopia’s ONLY animal rescue/welfare group, these four dogs are on their way to forever homes in the U.S. And incredibly, government officials closed the cave (where 20-30 unwanted dogs perished each month) due to publicity about the four saved dogs. Still, more homeless dogs in Ethiopia now face death by strychnine. Please support Dr. Anteneh Roba with donations through his Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation. He is the stuff tireless and brilliant animal activists are made of!

www.amsalefoundation.org

11/2/07, from Anteneh, AAmsale [at] aol.com — My name is Anteneh. I have been involved in a rescue of 4 dogs from a cave in Ethiopia. After the rescue they were staying at the only shelter for homeless animals run by an awesome organization called HOMELESS ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY (HAPS).

Unfortunately due to lack of funds they are closing down their operation. Nowhere to go the dogs who went without food or water for 2 months thrown into a cave about 20 to 30 ft. deep…were going to end up killed or homeless. So, I decided to get them to the USA for adoption, but also to raise awareness about the terrible plight of animals in Africa and to see if I can get money to help reopen the only shelter for homeless animals in Ethiopia. If there is anything you can do to help it would be appreciated.

ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Netanya Nathan, rodsandra [at] gulftel.com

BACKGROUND:
Blaze rages at ‘dog farm’ / Peter Wynne 10/18/07

EDITED FOR LENGTH

Last Friday’s fire at Alder Ridge Farms Inc., a dog-breeding facility on Reynolds Road near Lakewood, has focused attention on a business that has usually managed to avoid such exposure.

The smoky, early afternoon fire raged for more than four hours, requiring the efforts of firefighters from nine different volunteer companies to bring it under control. The blaze destroyed a metal building said to have been 450 feet long and 70 or more feet wide, making it one of the biggest in northern Wayne County.

The fire also caused the death of an untold number of animals, which Alder Ridge Farms normally would have sold for use in biomedical research.

For many area residents, the existence of such a business in northern Wayne was news. No sign along unpaved Reynolds Road announces Alder Ridge Farms; no street numbers identify the place as No. 442, the company’s address. Some residents knew about the “dog farm,” but had little idea about the scale of the operation or what goes on at the 290-acre hilltop property…

U.S. Air Force pilots successfully complete Operation Maggie Migration

After 25 years, Maggie has finally made the move from a tiny enclosure at the Alaska Zoo to her new home at the Performing Animal Welfare Society elephant sanctuary in Northern California. This is a great day not only for Maggie, but for IDA and everyone else who has worked to secure her freedom. We offer our sincerest thanks and congratulations to everyone who helped make this victory possible.

This historic trip included a five-hour flight in a temperature-controlled crate aboard a United States Air Force C-17 cargo plane from Alaska to Travis Air Force Base, followed by an 85-mile drive in a flatbed truck to PAWS. Maggie arrived safely on schedule at the sanctuary at 6:30 this morning.

Breeding elephants doesn’t protect them

Zoos like those in Pittsburgh should help preserve the animals’ native habitat instead

Wednesday, October 31, 2007
By Marianne Bessey

During this month’s ground-breaking ceremony at the Pittsburgh zoo’s proposed elephant breeding facility in Somerset Country, lots of lip service was paid to “conservation.” It is without question that elephants, endangered in Asia and threatened in Africa, desperately need help. But will spending millions of dollars on breeding a handful of elephants actually help elephants — or just the zoo’s bottom line?
