Farm Sanctuary News: Meet Clyde and Take Action on Cloning

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Farm Sanctuary – info [at] farmsanctuary.org
Date: Jan 23, 2008 6:43 PM
Subject: Farm Sanctuary News: Meet Clyde and Take Action on Cloning

Neglected Stallion Convalesces At Farm Sanctuary

Trapped inside a dilapidated 20-by-20 feet shed for more than four years, Clyde had nearly lost all hope by the time help reached him. Here, the approximately 20-year-old stallion stood in place on several feet of his own manure—suffering through the pain caused by his severely overgrown and cracked hooves. Isolated from the only other horse—his mother—on the upstate New York property, Clyde was denied much-needed companionship, pasture to graze in, and freedom to engage in even the most basic behaviors. Read more.

FDA Makes “Appallingly Irresponsible” Move to Approve Cloning

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a ruling permitting the use of cloned animals for human food. Farm Sanctuary subsequently issued a public statement denouncing the FDA’s decision and called for a mandatory moratorium on cloned animals and their offspring to be established immediately. We need your help to urge your federal legislators to pass important legislation that would place restrictions on this ethically unsound technology. Please take action today!

Farm Animals Hit Mainstream Media in 2007

In 2007, farm animals hit the mainstream media and Farm Sanctuary played a key role in bringing their issues to the fore, gaining attention to our cause like never before! Last year, we garnered more than 3870 media mentions, representing a seven-fold increase in only three years, educating millions of people about the plight of farm animals. From Maxine and Lucky Lady’s high-profile rescues to Wolfgang Puck’s decision to forgo foie gras, a deeper interest from media led to coverage on CNN, NPR, the Food Network, two cover stories in the LA Times, one cover story in the New York Times on Thanksgiving morning, and four living, breathing sanctuary residents featured above the fold on the front page of the New York Times’ Dining section. Click here to read some of our biggest media stories of the year!

GULF COAST
1/24/08: ABC Blog Wants Comments On Case Closure In SBP Dog Killings

www.KinshipCircle.org

FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE:

In the last several days, you should received urgent alerts related to the dismissal of the St. Bernard Parish street shooting case:
[history & facts] 1/20/08: Breaking News – Case Dismissed In SBP Street Shootings?
[letter-writing alert] 1/23/08: Demand Justice In Dog Killings, St. Bernard Parish

If you want either of these alerts resent to you, request them at: kinshipcircle [at] accessus.net

Another component to publicizing this miscarriage of justice is MEDIA. Today, ABC26 (local ABC affiliate in New Orleans) contacted Kinship Circle about an upcoming story. In the meantime, the ABC reporter asked that I direct people to a related blog question at the TV station’s website. He is looking for “good comments” to create buzz around the story.

Go the link below to leave comments. You may reference information from Kinship Circle’s sample letter (sent 1/23/08), but write in YOUR OWN WORDS.

And remember: There are two SEPARATE St. Bernard Parish animal shootings:

1. Sept. 2005: Street shootings videotaped by a Dallas photojournalist
2. Oct. 2005: Execution-style shooting of evacuees’ pets inside SBP schools

CASE THAT WAS RECENTLY DISMISSED: 1. Sept. 2005 street shootings
The SBP school shootings case is still open.

Delilah

Meet my newest foster, Delilah (who rumor has it is considering me for her new mommy…she talks in her sleep when she’s snuggled up to me at night, and I swear I heard her say it!) She, like Riley who so many of you generously sponsored this Holiday Season, had been living on a chain without even the ability to see to relieve the daily boredom, loneliness, and yearly sojourn into Pennsylvania’s winter cold. For she’s blind.

Can you imagine even for a moment living your life on the end of a chain not able to see? How terrifying, and so helpless to even defend yourself against intruders.

Thanks to a network of Pennsylvania volunteers, Delilah is now free and loving her inside home and family here with me, even sharing in the Christmas joys with her siblings.

Action Alerts

Stop the Spying
Speak out against telecom immunity with your photos, videos, and phone calls!

American Freedom Campaign: Tell your U.S. senators to reject telecom immunity in the FISA legislation
The U.S. House has already passed an update to FISA that does NOT include immunity for the telecommunications companies. As the Senate considers its own legislation, it is imperative that it exclude immunity, as well.

The Center for Food Safety: Protect rBGH labeling in Ohio!
Following in the foot steps of Pennsylvania, the State of Ohio is considering making it illegal for dairies to label their milk as “artificial growth hormone-free.”

Columbia and Snake Rivers Campaign: Urge your Rep. to Sign the ‘08 Salmon Letter
The Administration recently released its “new” salmon plan for Columbia and Snake River salmon. Still in draft form, the plan has already been heavily criticized as inadequate, unscientific, and very likely illegal.

CREDO Action: Tell Your Senators: No Warrantless Wiretapping, No Retroactive Immunity
This may be our last chance to stop a bad wiretapping bill from becoming law.

SDAC: HELP: Animal cruelty favored by Miami-Dade Commissioners – WRITE

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

UPDATE, 2/5/08:

Here’s a more recent alert, with a sample letter, also from SDAC:

————–

ACT: Help abused dogs in Miami, Florida – WRITE
Posted by: SledDogAC [at] aol.com
Fri Feb 1, 2008 8:03 pm (PST)
Please write and forward widely

Sample letter and email block follow:

Chained dogs bake outside in the intense tropical heat and sun of Miami-Dade County. Imagine how painful it is for a dog when a scorching hot metal chain touches his paws, nose or genitals. Chained dogs are also subject to tropical storm and hurricane force winds. On Jan. 22, 2008, the Miami-Dade County Commission rejected a tethering ordinance that would have established humane conditions for tethering. The ordinance would have required people to be outside when their dogs are chained. Please help the chained dogs of Miami-Dade County by writing to the commissioners of Miami-Dade County.

Commissioner emails:

Speak Out Now To Protect the Integrity Of Our Democracy!
Pass The Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008

CREDO Action: Tell the Presidential Candidates: Get Back to D.C. and Protect our Civil Liberties
In upcoming days the Senators will once again be addressing domestic wiretapping legislation that gives President Bush all the tools he wants to infringe on Americans’ civil liberties and grants retroactive immunity to big telecom companies that helped him spy on Americans without warrants.

DawnWatch: Whaling in LA Times, Peter Singer UK Guardian Commentary, and Australian front page 19 January, 2008
“Whaling showdown strains partnerships.”

Impeach Bush: Don’t let the Bush administration take away the National Mall
The National Park Service (NPS) is undertaking an initiative similar to that launched to exclude protests from New York City’s Great Lawn. It will be used to further restrict or ban protest on the National Mall.

CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS TODAY AND HELP END HORSE SLAUGHTER FOREVER!

Today is the National Call-In Day for Horses! Together, we have closed all U.S. horse slaughter plants. Now we need to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the transport to slaughter of American horses to Mexico and Canada.

It is a new year and a crucial time to make your voices heard. Let’s light up the phones on Capitol Hill to send the message loud and clear that we want a permanent ban on horse slaughter now.

We are tracking the impact of your calls, so click here to let us know you called your legislators.

community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2008_horsecallinday/

Finally, please tell all of your friends and family to call their legislators today and throughout this week.

I knew there was something I liked about Mike Gravel, creepy campaign ads aside. Although, they really should add in a question on dietary restrictions, since our shared veganism certainly would have put my score more in line with Kucinich’s.
