This is a special time for Farm Sanctuary as we celebrate the release of our President and Co-Founder Gene Baur’s new book, “Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food.” The book is being published by Simon & Schuster in March 2008. The book places an urgently needed focus on farm animal issues – making a call to action and a call for compassion. It is certain to touch readers through its unique approach and inspiring personal stories of hope.

“Some of the stories Gene Baur tells will break your heart and others will speak to your deepest convictions. It’s a book about appalling cruelty and heroic kindness, and it points the way to a better world.” ~ Alicia Silverstone

“Filled with hope, this book is written for all who strive for a more compassionate world. I highly recommend it.” ~ Dr. Jane Goodall

As you know Jonathan Paul, a dedicated animal and environmental activist, is serving a 51 month sentence after pleading guilty to burning the Cavel West Slaughterhouse (a horse meat slaughterhouse) in Redmond, Oregon in 1997.

Jonathan is one of many animal rights activists now serving time on behalf of their dedication to the animal rights movement.

Jonathan was arrested with 10 other activists connected to the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front as part of the so-called Green Scare.

Jonathan has been in prison since October and has been too ill for recent visitors. His birthday was on January 31st and he needs support from activists around the country now.

Visit the new Support Jonathan website and read Jonathan’s blog and learn how you can assist and encourage Jonathan.

Please remember to write to Jonathan and the other animal activists who are serving time in prison (contact information is below). Your letters can provide a lifeline.

Contact NBC about abuse of “Whiplash” the Rodeo Monkey
Posted by: AnimalAdvocacy [at] yahoogroups.com

Contact NBC about abuse of “Whiplash” the Rodeo Monkey

On January 31st, both the early Today show and channel 4 showed video/photos of this poor capuchin monkey “riding” a border collie at a livestock show/rodeo in Colorado as their “funny” photo of the day. Obviously they don’t know or care that the monkey is not riding the dog voluntarily and is strapped onto the dog, unable to get off. The video showed Whiplash almost falling off, flopping to one side, obviously bound to the animal while he ran wildly around the rodeo yard. Channel 4 has posted the photos on its website at www.nbc4.com/entertainment/15178021/detail.html

Please contact channel 4 and NBC to let them know referencing “the January 3oth Whiplash the Rodeo Monkey segment.” Mention that this is not the upbeat event they seek to portray it as and perhaps they would do a serious story on how this monkey is kept, trained, and then forced to ride the dog.

Submit your comments online at: www.nbc.com/Footer/Contact_Us/ (click on “other” in the menu box in the middle of the page) or by phone at: 202-885-4000.

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY AND CONTACT NBC TODAY!

BUAV: Court Victory/Comment on The Guardian’s ‘Nothing to hide?’

Monday, February 4th, 2008

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Mary-Louise Clews
Date: Feb 1, 2008 10:09 AM
Subject: BUAV strikes another legal blow to Government attempts to cover-up animal experiments…

In a landmark ruling on Wednesday, the Information Tribunal paved the way for much of the secrecy surrounding animal experiments in this country to be swept away.

The Tribunal ruled that the Government’s interpretation of what information about animal experiments should be withheld as confidential was too restrictive and legally wrong. This a major victory in the BUAV’s (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) long campaign to get the Government to be more open and transparent about the animal experiments it licenses in the UK to allow proper and informed public debate

Yo! It’s time for another easyVegan Shout Out!

Colbert Report Shout-Out

This one’s to Mark Hawthorne, author of Striking at the Roots, who so graciously send me a copy to read and review. (Thanks, Mark!)

I’m a bit behind the curve on this one – seems like everyone and their dogs have already read it (there’s even a Wiki entry!) – but I’m working on it and hope to have a review soon. I just got the book yesterday, and have already given it a few skim-throughs. Looks like a good read. (And the cover is super-cute, too!)

In the meantime, go check out some of Mark’s other stuff. I recommend starting with Satya (rest in peace, my mostest favoritist animal lib magazine evah!) and then catching up on some of his more recent writings. (Ironically, there’s also a Mark Hawthorne who works as the Managing Director of McDonald’s. Unless Mark is going deep undercover, assume that they aren’t one in the same, and skip right through McD’s propagandtastic press releases.)

More info about Striking at the Roots after the jump.
