People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urgent: Eight Dogs in Mississippi Need Your Voice!
Unable to convince officials to take action to help eight emaciated dogs in Purvis, Forrest County, Mississippi, caring and desperate area residents contacted PETA for help. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urgent: Roosters Left Behind in Cockfighting Raid!
On February 24, deputies in Anderson County, South Carolina, raided an apparent cockfighting ring, arresting 88 people, according to local media. Deputies reportedly found four roosters who had been forced to fight to the death and 15 birds who were still alive. PETA caseworkers were horrified to learn that officials left the birds with the alleged operator of the cockfighting ring, Henry Dale Stargel! Stargel faces charges for operating the cockfighting ring, and we understand that the surviving birds remain on his property.

LCA: Puppy Thrown Off Cliff – Statement from Chris DeRose

Subject: Puppy Thrown Off Cliff – Statement from Chris DeRose 3.4.2008

LCA has been notified of a very disturbing video showing a smiling U.S. Marine in Iraq throwing a puppy off a cliff. LCA fully supports U.S. troops and believes this situation does not reflect on U.S. soldiers that are doing their best and putting their lives on the line. However, the act of a U.S. soldier committing animal cruelty is completely unacceptable under any circumstances.

“This video that everyone has seen is atrocious. U.S. Marine David Mortari and the unidentified Marine in the video are absolute cowards and a disgrace to the men and women of this country who valiantly defend the U.S. There is absolutely no excuse for this behavior. These two men shouldn’t be wearing the uniform. I demand that these individuals be held responsible for such a despicable and cowardly act.

When a U.S. soldier is representing America overseas and during war time, it is crucial for any heinous act to be fully investigated. LCA demands for elected officials to put pressure on the military to do a complete and thorough investigation. The correlation between cruelty to animals and cruelty to humans has been proven time and time again. These Marines must be punished.” states LCA President Chris DeRose.

CREDO Action: Missourians, Stop Monsanto’s Efforts to Dictate Milk Labeling

Kinship Circle - 2008-03-01 - Downer Ban, USDA Says We Don’t Need It

The Cost Of Cheap Meat: Utter Inhumanity
photo: Farm Sanctuary

From Brenda Shoss, Kinship Circle:

I try to keep my personal opinions out of letter-writing campaigns. So, I apologize for the intrusion. But I am livid.

I see videos, photos and cruelty reports daily, with the silent motto: I can cry later. The HSUS videos from Hallmark Meat Packing Co. are about the worse I’ve seen. Cows with huge, bewildered eyes as they’re rolled, clubbed, thrown down chutes, dragged on caved-in legs…

The first letter campaign Kinship Circle ever posted was to Congress, asking for humane euthanasia of downer animals. That was nearly a decade ago…and NO DOWNER LAW EXISTS.

So, you’d think the recall of 143,383,823 pounds of beef would finally prompt a downer law. Or that the government would be so embarrassed it took some animal guy with a video camera to bust their inept inspections, they’d…well…pass the downer law.

But you’d be wrong. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer, perhaps the most moronic individual currently promoting beef for the Bush admin, struck down calls from Democratic senators for a ban on the slaughter of downer cows (at Congressional hearings, 2/28/08).

Schafer feels downers can enter the food supply safely: “The rules say if one goes down, you call the veterinarian to make a judgment… Today I’m convinced the rules in place are such where we are protecting the food supply.” (In the meantime, the one who “went down” is in agonizing pain).

And so it goes. Torturing animals under the radar. AN ANIMAL WHO CAN’T WALK IS AN ANIMAL WHO CAN’T TURN A PROFIT. “GET ‘EM UP!”

I now believe it is a waste of time to lobby Sec. Schafer. But your Senators and Reps, especially Democrats (who called for the hearing), can support the Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act (H.R. 661/ S. 394) which bans slaughter of downer cows, pigs, sheep and all “livestock.”

If you already wrote to your Senators and Rep, please write again. As background, our original letter campaign is here:

2/23/08: USDA-Certified Cruel: Downers Dragged, Shocked, Rammed

Don’t let the downer law sit on a shelf for another 10 years.

THE AMAZING STORY…as told by rescuer Alissa Johnson:
REPLY TO: Alissa Johnson, alissacjohnson [at] gmail.com

I received an email (originally from Ruby) about a mother dog hanging around an abandoned grocery store (Com-Pak) in New Orleans East. I went to check on her immediately after work that day. She was just sitting in front of the store, obviously nursing. I couldn’t believe it. The grocery store is on Hayne. I brought her wet food everyday to gain her trust. On Wednesday I searched the outside of the building for the puppies, but I did not find them. Every time the mother would get scared she’d run across Hayne to cross the levee to reach Lake Pontchartrain.
