In Defense of Animals (IDA): Santa Clara Board of Supervisors to Vote on AB 1634 Resolution Tuesday June 3rd at 9:30am – Please Join Us or Call & e-mail Now!
The Santa Clara Board of Supervisors is poised to join these hundreds of other elected officials by adopting a resolution of support for AB 1634 on Tuesday, June 3rd. But this vote is different than the others in one important way…the breeder groups opposing progress for our companion animals have decided that this is a big chance to try to make a public statement against spay & neuter before AB 1634 is heard in the Senate. They are sending out mass emails across California, trying to affect the vote in Santa Clara.

MoveOn.org: Record Prices, Record Profits?
As we all pay record-high gas prices, big oil companies are raking in record profits. It’s unfair: millions of us are sacrificing while a few thousand oil executives stuff their bank accounts. It’s time for Congress to pass a windfall profits tax. If big oil companies continue over-charging Americans, some of their ridiculous profits should be invested in green jobs and alternative energy research.

Pacific Environment: Protect Altai from a Gas Pipeline!
Altai’s remote and pristine Ukok Plateau is part of the Golden Mountains of Altai, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Currently, Altai’s environment and communities are being threatened by a proposed gas pipeline from Russia to China.

Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Tell Bunge to stop burning old growth forests and profiting from slave labor!
Agribusiness giant Bunge is illegally burning native old growth forests at the edge of the Amazon rainforest and profiting from the use of slave labor.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Tell Your Senators: Strengthen and pass the Climate Security Act
For the first time, Congress is in position to pass legislation on climate change. But as any climate change bill would, it faces two obstacles: opposition from anti-environment legislators, and pressure from anti-environment interest groups. Make sure the bill is strong enough to make a difference by telling your senators to strengthen the Climate Security Act before the vote early next week!

AHA: Critical Anti-Dogfighting Language Included in Federal Farm Bill

Friday, May 30th, 2008

FYI…

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: American Humane Association – email [at] americanhumane.org
Date: Thu, May 22, 2008 at 5:38 PM
Subject: Action Alert legislative outcome

Critical Anti-Dogfighting Language Included in Federal Farm Bill

Dear advocate,

You may have taken action last year on the Federal Dog Protection Act (HR 3327, sponsored by Rep. Elton Gallegly) or the Dog Fighting Prohibition Act (HR 3219/S 1800, sponsored by Rep. Betty Sutton and Sens. John Kerry and Barbara Boxer). Most of the language from these bills has been included in the federal Farm Bill, which finally passed a House/Senate conference committee last week.

The committee omitted the provision in both bills that would have prohibited attending a dogfight as a spectator as well as the provision in Sen. Gallegly’s bill that would have allowed animal control agencies, humane societies and state societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals to file civil suits.

However, the Farm Bill now makes it a federal offense subject to five years’ imprisonment to sponsor or train dogs for dogfighting, use the U.S. Postal Service to mail dogfighting paraphernalia or otherwise promote dogfights.

The provisions included in the Farm Bill have strengthened the means of addressing our nation’s dogfighting crisis.

Thank you for supporting these important pieces of legislation!

This pretty much speaks to how I’ve been feeling this week, especially in light of the pending Democratic party implosion. Can’t we all just get along?

Alley Cat Allies: JFK Cats Threatened Again – Join Us to Help Protect Their Lives
In late November, 2007, we told you about The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s plan to catch and kill cats from John F. Kennedy International Airport’s property. Cat advocates came together, sending hundreds of letters to the officials at the Port Authority and with your help and local leaders’ pressure, trapping was halted. Unfortunately, this past Memorial Day, the Port Authority alerted animal advocates that the plan to catch and kill the cats at JFK airport would commence again, effective immediately.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Tell Your Representative to Reject Senator Bond’s Spying “Compromise”
Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) wants to bury lawsuits filed against telecom companies in a secret court. And, when they get there, he wants cases dismissed if the companies can show that the President gave them a note saying his request for customer information was legal.

Audubon: Senate to Vote on Historic Global Warming Bill
The climate crisis is the most urgent challenge of our time. The Senate is expected to vote very soon on a bill that will help us avoid the worst impacts of global warming. While the Climate Security Act makes great strides toward solving global warming, we need to strengthen the bill and make sure that it’s not weakened by including big giveaways to polluters. Please help us make sure that the Senate strengthens and passes the Climate Security Act.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Breeder Offers Healthy Greyhounds for Medical Research
Britain’s largest breeder of greyhounds for racing is offering to sell healthy but slow dogs for medical research because the dogs are a financial burden on his business. He already gives about 30 dogs to Liverpool University every year for use in dissection. The university claims such killing is “ethical” because they “only carry out research on tissues of dogs and cats that have died or been euthanised and with the full consent of the animal’s owner.” Please Take Action to urge the university to set an official policy forbidding researchers from accepting healthy greyhounds for dissection.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Ask your Senators to Approve Ban On Northern California Oil Drilling
The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation unanimously approved a proposed measure to ban oil drilling off the Northern California coast. The bill, which has already been passed by the House of Representatives, would permanently protect hundreds of square miles of fragile coastal ecosystems where millions of fish and marine mammals live. Please Take Action to urge your U.S. Senators to approve the proposed ban on oil drilling off the coast of California’s Sonoma and Marin Counties.

Earthjustice: Keep America’s Largest Forest Off the Chopping Block
The Tongass National Forest in southeastern Alaska is the crown jewel of our nation’s wild forests. At 17 million acres, the Tongass is home to a stunning variety of wildlife, including wild salmon, bears, eagles, and wolves. This key piece of our natural heritage should be preserved for future generations to enjoy, yet the Bush administration wants to open up 2.3 million acres of Tongass backcountry for roads and clearcut logging.

Ecological Internet / The Rainforest Portal: Action Alert: Cambodian Cardamom Mountain Wilderness to Be Dammed

Oceana: Protect Pacific Leatherback Sea Turtles
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the government agency responsible for fisheries management, is considering allowing hundreds of miles of fishing lines and baited hooks to be set inside the Pacific Leatherback Conservation Area off California and Oregon under what is known as an “Exempted Fishing Permit.” The permit would be for the catch of swordfish, but would also allow for the catch of up to five endangered leatherback sea turtles, a short-finned pilot whale and other marine life as well.

The Sierra Club: Urge Congress to Strengthen Global Warming Bill
We all know that global warming is real and that we need to act now. Congress is getting the message. The Senate is poised to take action in June when it considers the Climate Security Act. There is an urgent need to strengthen this global warming bill as it moves forward.

Action Alerts

CREDO Action: Oppose the McCain-Lieberman nuclear power grab
Senator McCain has made it known that he would support the “Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act” if specific nuclear subsidies were added. Now his friend and supporter Sen. Joe Lieberman has done just that — floated an amendment to the global warming bill that would take funds away from clean energy sources like wind and solar and earmark them for the nuclear power industry.

CREDO Action: Tell Citi: Stop Funding Coal, and Start funding Renewables
Citi, the leading funder of the coal industry, is backing the construction of a new $1.8 billion coal-fired powerplant in Wise County, Virginia. Coal is already the single biggest source of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

People for the American Way (PFAW): Tell State Officials – Protect My Voting Rights
Kansas is just one of the states in which People For and our allies worked to defeat bills that were designed to disenfranchise voters — we prevented these new barriers to voting from being erected in Missouri, Oklahoma, Mississippi and more states. In Colorado, we defeated nine such bills. These victories over bad policy and the worst kind of partisan politics wouldn’t have been won without the work of activists like you. If you want to keep the momentum going, you can join our petition urging state election officials to beat back bad voter ID bills in their states.

Save the Manatee Club: Ask Governor Crist to Veto CS/HB 7059
A bill that was recently passed by the Florida House and Senate (CS/HB 7059) will threaten protection for seagrass, which is an important food source for our endangered manatees. We need your immediate help to stop this bad bill in its tracks.

Not-So-Random Friday Activist Music: DOG loves “appeasers”

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Since Memorial Day is this weekend, for this week’s lineup, I’m posting a few classic anti-war songs: I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag by Country Joe McDonald; War by Edwin Starr; and Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols (Is this the m.p.l.a / Or is this the u.d.a / Or is this the i.r.a / I thought it was the u.k or just / Another country).

While you’re out there soaking up the sun and Boca Burgers, remember:

On Memorial Day we’ll hear about men who gave their lives for their country, but many lives were not given, they were taken, and taken stupidly and carelessly. And there has been great public piety about those men and their “sacrifice” on the part of politicians who blithely sacrificed them.

Enjoy your three-day weekend.

Wur n Piece lolz after teh jump:

Alley Cat Allies: Tell New Jersey Senators to Protect Cats from Antifreeze Poisoning! [For NJ residents only]

American Humane: Tips for Reporting Internet Animal Abuse
The Internet can be a powerful medium for connecting us to information to combat animal cruelty, but it also can be a haven for animal abusers who celebrate and actively advertise their shocking crimes. The best way to stop this type of abuse is to immediately report it to the proper authorities and to refrain from contacting, visiting or forwarding links to the offending sites.

Farm Sanctuary: Oprah Announces 21 Days Free of Animal Products
Oprah announced that she has embarked on a 21-day cleanse that includes removing all animal products from her diet in her quest to be a “conscious eater.” This is BIG. So BIG, in fact, that we need you to show your support of Oprah’s choice to try an animal-free diet.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Call On North Carolina Veterinarian to Stop Pushing Puppies
Vets for Pets Animal Hospital in Dunn, North Carolina, allegedly doubles as a puppy mill. The hospital’s owner, Dr. Guy Beretich, is said to breed puppies behind his clinic in order to sell them at his Dunn pet store, Pets N Such. When PETA cruelty caseworkers called Vets for Pets, they were told that they could “adopt” a dog for a fee and that puppies bred by Beretich were for sale in his store.
