Action Alerts

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Act Now: Stop Secret Spying Deal
Late Friday night, the ACLU caught wind of a dangerous backroom deal brewing. The “deal” would rush a House vote that would push through a dangerous sellout on government spying powers, possibly in the next few days.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Demand More Media Choices
The consolidation of TV, radio and newspaper ownership hinders vigorous public debate and poses a great threat to the First Amendment rights of all Americans. Tell your members of Congress to support S.J. Res 28, and get the FCC to end media consolidation.

Born Free USA / The Animal Protection Institute (API): Help Us Keep Animals Like Indy from Being Caught in Cruel Traps
Work with us to protect dogs, cats, and other animal victims from suffering in traps. Most state agencies do not track incidents like Indy’s death, but we do, and we need your help.

CREDO Action: Tell the Senate: Stop Big Media
Sign the petition at right to Majority Leader Harry Reid and your senators in support of Senator Dorgan’s resolution of disapproval of the new media ownership rules.

Defenders of Wildlife: Fighting For Your “Rights” in Congress
Ship strikes are taking their toll on the North Atlantic right whale as these gentle giants migrate through busy shipping lanes on the eastern seaboard. But the Bush/Cheney Administration refuses to intervene — choosing instead to do nothing as these marine mammals continue to move toward extinction.

Farm Sanctuary: Winning Update on the Trader Joe’s Campaign
After investigative footage obtained by Farm Sanctuary and the most recent undercover investigation by Mercy for Animals that exposed abhorrent and inexcusable cruelty administered by the egg farm Gemperle, Trader Joe’s has finally decided to end the sale of eggs produced by this company…lease thank Trader Joe’s for their recent decision to end purchases from Gemperle, and urge them to end all sales of eggs produced from battery caged hens.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Tell Senators to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Pacific Coastline
Some Senate Republicans have filed an amendment to the Flood Insurance Bill (S. 2973) that would open up vast natural areas to the oil, coal, and logging industries, destroying many important animal habitats on land and at sea. We have little time to defeat this amendment, so please take action now to urge your Senators to vote against cloture for Amendment #4720 to S. 2973 and maintain the Democratic filibuster.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Tell Western Washington Fairgrounds to Ditch Cruel Circus
Circus Vazquez is scheduled to appear at the Western Washington Fairgrounds in Puyallup May 16 to 20. Last month, a tiger with the circus was attacked and killed by one or more of her cagemates after the circus left six tigers crammed together in one cage. Circus Vazquez is currently traveling with elephant handler Will Davenport. In the past year, the Davenport family has been repeatedly cited by the USDA for inhumane handling and failure to provide adequate care to three elephants, named Queenie, Tina and Jewel.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Thoroughbreds: Drugged, Whipped, and Run to Death–Join Our Call for Congressional Hearings
Please ask your member of Congress to take action to investigate the horse racing industry’s dark side by calling for hearings right now.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Michigan Man Accused of Routinely Torturing His Three Dogs–Speak Out Now!
Please thank Newaygo County Prosecuting Attorney Chrystal Roach and 27th Circuit Judge Anthony Monton for their hard work on this case. As animal abusers almost never strike only once, please also ask them to make sure that—if convicted and in addition to serving the maximum sentence allowed by law—Reed is prohibited from owning or harboring any animals for as long as possible. In addition, urge them to ensure that he receives psychological evaluation and counseling at his own expense.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Carriacou Island Officials to Stop Sea Turtle Torture!
Horrified visitors to the Island of Carriacou—off the coast of Grenada in the Caribbean—contacted PETA after witnessing the horrific manner in which locals torture sea turtles to death. Witnesses report seeing these beautiful animals pulled from their ocean home, flipped over onto their backs on dry land, and left to bake to death in the hot sun. A heartbreaking video provided by tourists shows a group of overturned and helpless turtles that flail their flippers in a futile attempt to save themselves.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Demand That Charges Be Filed Against Apparent Puppy Fighters!
PETA caseworkers couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw videos posted on MySpace depicting several young men who were apparently forcing puppies to fight. The videos show several pit bull puppies who were fighting each other. The puppies repeatedly attempt to “back off” from the fight—as is their instinct—but the young men continually bring the puppies face-to-face, shaking and jostling the animals to enrage them.

The Wilderness Society: America’s Serengeti
The Senate is expected to vote as early as May 13 on an energy package full of outdated ideas–especially targeting the Arctic Refuge for drilling–that would move America away from, not toward, a secure energy future.
