Action Alerts

CREDO Action: Oppose the McCain-Lieberman nuclear power grab
Senator McCain has made it known that he would support the “Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act” if specific nuclear subsidies were added. Now his friend and supporter Sen. Joe Lieberman has done just that — floated an amendment to the global warming bill that would take funds away from clean energy sources like wind and solar and earmark them for the nuclear power industry.

CREDO Action: Tell Citi: Stop Funding Coal, and Start funding Renewables
Citi, the leading funder of the coal industry, is backing the construction of a new $1.8 billion coal-fired powerplant in Wise County, Virginia. Coal is already the single biggest source of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

People for the American Way (PFAW): Tell State Officials – Protect My Voting Rights
Kansas is just one of the states in which People For and our allies worked to defeat bills that were designed to disenfranchise voters — we prevented these new barriers to voting from being erected in Missouri, Oklahoma, Mississippi and more states. In Colorado, we defeated nine such bills. These victories over bad policy and the worst kind of partisan politics wouldn’t have been won without the work of activists like you. If you want to keep the momentum going, you can join our petition urging state election officials to beat back bad voter ID bills in their states.

Save the Manatee Club: Ask Governor Crist to Veto CS/HB 7059
A bill that was recently passed by the Florida House and Senate (CS/HB 7059) will threaten protection for seagrass, which is an important food source for our endangered manatees. We need your immediate help to stop this bad bill in its tracks.

Campaign Updates, Press Releases, etc.

invisible voices: Kofa Mountain Lions EA scoping period – deadline extended to June 23
The formal scoping period for the Kofa Mountain Lions Environmental Assessment has been extended from May 24 to June 23, 2008. The reason for the extension is that some documents had been requested that pertained to the Lions, and were just released. One of these is a Categorical Exclusion that Ron tells me is important because it mentions the Mountain Lions but does not include them in an Action Alternative.

World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA): Urgent help needed for animals that cyclone survivors depend on
On May 2, Cyclone Nargis struck the southwest coast of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), causing devastation and loss of life on an extreme scale. Current reports estimate 78,000 people have lost their lives, with an estimated 56,000 missing. Many more are left homeless and have no access to food, medical supplies and shelter. An emergency veterinary team from the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) will enter Myanmar in the next few days. WSPA needs to provide animal welfare now so that those people who survived the cyclone do not lose the animals they depend upon for their livelihoods and for food.
