Earthjustice: Keep America’s Largest Forest Off the Chopping Block
The Tongass National Forest in southeastern Alaska is the crown jewel of our nation’s wild forests. At 17 million acres, the Tongass is home to a stunning variety of wildlife, including wild salmon, bears, eagles, and wolves. This key piece of our natural heritage should be preserved for future generations to enjoy, yet the Bush administration wants to open up 2.3 million acres of Tongass backcountry for roads and clearcut logging.

Oceana: Protect Pacific Leatherback Sea Turtles
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the government agency responsible for fisheries management, is considering allowing hundreds of miles of fishing lines and baited hooks to be set inside the Pacific Leatherback Conservation Area off California and Oregon under what is known as an “Exempted Fishing Permit.” The permit would be for the catch of swordfish, but would also allow for the catch of up to five endangered leatherback sea turtles, a short-finned pilot whale and other marine life as well.

The Sierra Club: Urge Congress to Strengthen Global Warming Bill

Friends of Animals (FoA): Monk parakeets’ fate in judge’s hands
Animal lovers call them a colorful part of the urban ecology, but the United Illuminating Co. wants a state judge to declare Connecticut’s monk parakeet population a tenacious threat to public health and safety. The utility claims the company’s most-effective way to deal with the stick nests that some parrot colonies build on utility poles was the capture-and-slaughter program that sparked controversy, protests and worldwide interest in fall 2005.

Friends of World Heritage: China Earthquake: Protect Pandas and Restore World Heritage
Some of China’s most cherished World Heritage sites were also affected by the 7.9-magnitude earthquake. Sichuan and Wenchuan provinces — those most impacted by the earthquake — are home to several World Heritage sites, including two severely affected by the quake: Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, home to 30% of the world’s remaining endangered giant pandas, and Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (located only 50 km from the epicenter).
