Alley Cat Allies: JFK Cats Threatened Again – Join Us to Help Protect Their Lives
In late November, 2007, we told you about The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s plan to catch and kill cats from John F. Kennedy International Airport’s property. Cat advocates came together, sending hundreds of letters to the officials at the Port Authority and with your help and local leaders’ pressure, trapping was halted. Unfortunately, this past Memorial Day, the Port Authority alerted animal advocates that the plan to catch and kill the cats at JFK airport would commence again, effective immediately.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Tell Your Representative to Reject Senator Bond’s Spying “Compromise”
Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) wants to bury lawsuits filed against telecom companies in a secret court. And, when they get there, he wants cases dismissed if the companies can show that the President gave them a note saying his request for customer information was legal.

Audubon: Senate to Vote on Historic Global Warming Bill
The climate crisis is the most urgent challenge of our time. The Senate is expected to vote very soon on a bill that will help us avoid the worst impacts of global warming. While the Climate Security Act makes great strides toward solving global warming, we need to strengthen the bill and make sure that it’s not weakened by including big giveaways to polluters. Please help us make sure that the Senate strengthens and passes the Climate Security Act.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Breeder Offers Healthy Greyhounds for Medical Research
Britain’s largest breeder of greyhounds for racing is offering to sell healthy but slow dogs for medical research because the dogs are a financial burden on his business. He already gives about 30 dogs to Liverpool University every year for use in dissection. The university claims such killing is “ethical” because they “only carry out research on tissues of dogs and cats that have died or been euthanised and with the full consent of the animal’s owner.” Please Take Action to urge the university to set an official policy forbidding researchers from accepting healthy greyhounds for dissection.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Ask your Senators to Approve Ban On Northern California Oil Drilling
The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation unanimously approved a proposed measure to ban oil drilling off the Northern California coast. The bill, which has already been passed by the House of Representatives, would permanently protect hundreds of square miles of fragile coastal ecosystems where millions of fish and marine mammals live. Please Take Action to urge your U.S. Senators to approve the proposed ban on oil drilling off the coast of California’s Sonoma and Marin Counties.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Ask Senate Committee to Pass California Healthy Pets Act [California Residents]
In July 2006, California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine introduced the California Healthy Pets Act (AB 1634), to require all dogs and cats over four months old adopted or purchased in California to be spayed or neutered. This would greatly reduce the number of animals suffering in and killed in our shelters due to a lack of homes. Please Take Action to urge members of the Senate Local Government Committee to approve AB 1634 and send it to the Senate floor for a vote.

National Organization of Women (NOW): Promote Diversity in Media Ownership
Thanks to your messages, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to reverse the new Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules that would allow even greater consolidation in media ownership. Next, we need the House of Representatives to pass its own resolution of disapproval.

National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA): The NRA Wants Loaded Guns in Parks. What do YOU Want?
That’s right, guns in parks. LOADED guns in parks. For some reason, the NRA thinks it’s a great idea to let anyone and everyone possess loaded weapons in our national parks. Allowing loaded guns in parks poses a threat to wildlife, park visitors, and puts our already over-burdened park rangers at even greater risk. The Bush Administration has opened up the regulations for comment. If they want comments, let’s not disappoint them. Submit your comments TODAY and tell them to keep the current regulations in place.

Oxfam: Tell the Senate: Help poor people deal with climate change
Ask your senators to ensure that the Lieberman-Warner bill requires a higher level of emission permits to be sold—rather than given away to polluting companies—and uses the money raised to help the poor adapt to the impacts of climate change.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge the European Union to Ban All Seal Products
This summer, European Commissioner Stavros Dimas will draft legislation that, if passed, will totally ban seal products in all 27 countries of the European Union (EU). This sweeping legislation would close European ports to peddlers of seal pelts, which could spare hundreds of thousands of baby seals the horrifying fate of being bludgeoned and skinned alive. Please join us in urging Commissioner Dimas to follow in the footsteps of the U.S. and draft legislation for a total EU ban on seal products.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Ask Cirque du Soleil to Use Alternative to Live Birds
After PETA heard rumors that Cirque du Soleil—renowned for its spectacular animal-free productions—would use birds in its new Las Vegas show, Criss Angel Believe, we immediately contacted Cirque du Soleil and MGM for confirmation. We received word from MGM Mirage Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Alan Feldman that “[b]irds will play a small, but artistically significant, role ….” Our request to meet with Feldman to discuss animatronic options was declined.

StopBigMedia.com: Take Action: Tell the House to Veto the FCC
The Senate voted in overwhelming numbers to reject an FCC ruling that would unleash a new wave of media consolidation across America. More than a quarter-million people took action and sent a powerful message to Washington: Big Media is big enough. The fight now moves to the House, where a bipartisan version of the Senate “resolution of disapproval” (H.J.Res.79) needs your support. Tell your representative to vote for H.J. Res. 79 and Stop Big Media.
