In Defense of Animals (IDA): Santa Clara Board of Supervisors to Vote on AB 1634 Resolution Tuesday June 3rd at 9:30am – Please Join Us or Call & e-mail Now!
The Santa Clara Board of Supervisors is poised to join these hundreds of other elected officials by adopting a resolution of support for AB 1634 on Tuesday, June 3rd. But this vote is different than the others in one important way…the breeder groups opposing progress for our companion animals have decided that this is a big chance to try to make a public statement against spay & neuter before AB 1634 is heard in the Senate. They are sending out mass emails across California, trying to affect the vote in Santa Clara.
MoveOn.org: Record Prices, Record Profits?
As we all pay record-high gas prices, big oil companies are raking in record profits. It’s unfair: millions of us are sacrificing while a few thousand oil executives stuff their bank accounts. It’s time for Congress to pass a windfall profits tax. If big oil companies continue over-charging Americans, some of their ridiculous profits should be invested in green jobs and alternative energy research.
Pacific Environment: Protect Altai from a Gas Pipeline!
Altai’s remote and pristine Ukok Plateau is part of the Golden Mountains of Altai, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Currently, Altai’s environment and communities are being threatened by a proposed gas pipeline from Russia to China.
Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Tell Bunge to stop burning old growth forests and profiting from slave labor!
Agribusiness giant Bunge is illegally burning native old growth forests at the edge of the Amazon rainforest and profiting from the use of slave labor.
SaveOurEnvironment.org: Tell Your Senators: Strengthen and pass the Climate Security Act
For the first time, Congress is in position to pass legislation on climate change. But as any climate change bill would, it faces two obstacles: opposition from anti-environment legislators, and pressure from anti-environment interest groups. Make sure the bill is strong enough to make a difference by telling your senators to strengthen the Climate Security Act before the vote early next week!
Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): Tell Your Senators: No Space Weapons
For nearly a half-century, the peaceful use of space has yielded immense benefits to humans worldwide. Now, the Bush administration is requesting funding for a program that would, for the first time, set the United States on a path of placing weapons in space. This program is dangerous since it would encourage other countries to develop similar space weapons, which could be used to attack satellites. As soon as next week, the U.S. Senate could begin considering the annual defense bills that will determine whether to fund this program.
Wal-Mart Watch: Keep Wal-Mart out of Tupper Lake
The Village of Tupper Lake, New York is fighting for its wildlife. The mayor of this small Adirondack Mountain town has sent a letter to Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott asking the retail giant to build a massive supercenter there. We hear a lot of talk these days about Wal-Mart “going green.” But you and I both know that Wal-Mart has a terrible environmental record and a new supercenter would devastate Tupper Lake’s natural mountain surroundings. Local residents have spoken out against a new Wal-Mart — but now they need your help.
The Wilderness Society: Key Vote to Protect Forests and Communities
The Bush Administration wants to cut essential funding for our National Forests and for nearby rural communities. Adding insult to injury, the Administration has even proposed the sell-off of National Forest lands to make money. On June 3, the House of Representatives will vote on legislation to continue funding for National Forests and communities. Please use our letter below to tell your Representative to support H.R. 3058, the Public Land Communities Transition Act, so rural communities and National Forests will receive the funding they urgently need.

Dogs Deserve Better: Chain Off 2008: June 27 – July 7
Chain Off has been held annually around the 4th of July since 2003, highlighting the reality that while Americans are celebrating their own freedom, there are tens of thousands of Man’s Best Friends in every state who are still not free: America’s chained and penned dogs. These dogs are found in backyards stretching from Delaware to Alaska, from Maine to Hawaii, throughout the provinces of Canada, and in countries around the world.
Ecological Internet: VICTORY: Ecological Internet Welcomes ANZ Bank Withdrawal from Tasmanian Pulp Mill Disaster
Ecological Internet (EI) welcomes news that ANZ Bank of Australia will not fund the Gunns Tasmanian pulp mill [search]. In a statement ANZ announced it will not provide finance for the AU$ 2 billion project to pulp ancient forests for throw-away paper products, but did not provide a reason for withdrawing. International environmental protest spearheaded by Ecological Internet, in support of local protests, certainly played a major role.
Ecological Internet: WWF’s Rainforest Protection Goals Prolong Ecological Decline
15% protection of last large intact forest ecosystems, and promotion of continued ancient forest diminishment, are insufficient to maintain Earth’s ecosystems, climate, biosphere and human advancement.
Voiceless: The Fund for Animals: 2008 Grants Program
2008 marks the fifth year in the life of the Voiceless Grants Program, a year which we hope will see many more applications to fund inspiring and innovative projects that aim to improve the lives of animals in Australia.
