IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE CONTACT:

Our sanctuary — east of Willits in Mendocino County has a wildfire approaching that is only 5% contained. We have ~200 animals there.

The area shelters and rescue sites are already filling due to the amount of displaced livestock and pets — so we need to appeal to our friends, volunteers and foster homes in the Bay Area to help! I believe we have housing opportunities for our dogs in Sonoma and surrounding areas and can house our cats or many of them at our facility in Marin — though we will need volunteers to help care for the dogs — and the cats!

Action Alerts

Environmental Defense Fund: Thank Your Senators For Cleaning Up Shipping Pollution!
Thanks to you, the Senate passed the Marine Pollution Prevention Act late Thursday night! As soon as this bill is reconciled with the House version, the U.S. will be able to ratify an international treaty to clean up the toxic pollution from large cargo and cruise ships that are polluting our communities.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Fairfax Petland to Stop Freezing Baby Animals Alive
Petland is a national chain that sells puppies, kittens, birds, and small animals. It is reprehensible for pet stores to contribute to the overpopulation crisis, which affects all companion animals, and this indefensible and unscrupulous practice is a more than sufficient cause for action. But Petland has really outdone itself this time. PETA has obtained video footage of baby mice and rats being frozen alive so that they can be sold as snake food at at the Petland store located at 9404-A Main St. in Fairfax, Virginia.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge the USDA to Put Video Cameras in Slaughterhouses
PETA’s undercover investigators can’t be everywhere at once, and the USDA inspectors who are supposed to prevent the worst abuses of animals are not getting the job done. So we need your help—ask the USDA to install cameras in slaughterhouses.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Edward Jones to Celebrate Without Cruelty
After PETA learned that investment firm Edward Jones hired Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus for a private performance to celebrate the opening of its 10,000th branch, we immediately contacted the company to urge executives to cancel the show. Edward Jones Managing Partner James Weddle ignored our request and refused to return our calls to discuss the issue.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Mayor to Clean Up Horrific Conditions at ShanChong Animal Shelter
For several years, PETA has been monitoring the government-run ShanChong animal shelter near Taipei and working with government officials in the area to improve the lives of animals at the facility. But instead of improving, conditions have continued to deteriorate.

Kinship Circle: The Lucky Ones, Iowa Flood Pigs

When Kinship Circle began working with Iowa Dept. of Agriculture/Veterinary Response to coordinate volunteers for Iowa animal flood victims — we soon learned about the pig tragedy. Hog farms had filled with water, with pigs trapped in crates and others adrift over a wide swath of southeast Iowa. As many as 40,000 pigs were evacuated. An estimated 4,000 pigs died. Still others swam for their lives in rapid waters. Some managed to hoist their bodies atop levees, only to be shot dead by officials concerned they’d destroy sandbags. Residents and officials herded some on to barges, to ferry them back to owners. Many carcasses remain as waters recede.

But pigs are smart. And some escaped to dry ground. Reports came in daily: Pigs spotted by churches, in homes, near levees, on rooftops. Early during this operation, Kinship Circle called Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, to ask if their Emergency Rescue Team could come to Iowa. Within 24 hours, they were on the road from Watkins Glen, New York to Oakville, Iowa.

On conference call with state officials, we learned that pigs currently stranded, when found, could be taken to a temporary holding area… And once in Farm Sanctuary’s custody, receive immediate care and transport to sanctuary. That’s right: sanctuary.

Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid Network volunteers have assisted Farm Sanctuary rescuers. See below, to donate to FS Emergency Rescue Fund.

Farm Sanctuary: Disaster strikes for farm animals; Stranded Pigs Need Urgent Help

Kinship Circle - 2008-06-24 - Emergency Sheltering Volunteers Needed In Iowa 01

EMERGENCY RESCUE FUND
Stranded Pigs Need Urgent Help!

Flood waters have ravaged the Midwest, and farm animals need immediate rescue! The recent flooding has hit largely agricultural areas, leaving pigs, cattle and other animals stranded.

Hundreds of factory farm pigs have been left trapped and drowning in crates, or freed only to be swept away by rapid currents … trying desperately to survive on area levees.

Farm Sanctuary dispatched a rescue team with our large animal rescue trailer last week and we are currently on the ground in Iowa and Illinois to save drowning and stranded pigs.

Please, give to the Emergency Rescue Fund right now to help our lifesaving efforts and rescue these stranded, suffering animals:

secure2.vegsource.com/farmsanc/fs/donate_erf_pigs08_alert.html

This rescue is urgent and every moment counts. We, and the pigs, need your help right now.

Many pigs swam for their lives to the closest land or levee. Many are stranded without food or water. They are desperately clinging to life and waiting for rescuers to arrive.

Farm Sanctuary is working with other organizations to transport surviving pigs to a temporary holding area, and once pigs are in our custody, Farm Sanctuary will be ensuring their immediate care and transport to sanctuary.

Action Alerts

Common Cause: Recapture The Flag
It’s been a tough few years for “we the people.” We’ve endured repeated abuses of power by the Executive Branch of our government. Time after time, we’ve watched Congress fail to stand up for what’s right. We’ve seen the very symbols of our democracy tarnished, as our nation’s reputation suffers at home and abroad because of these abuses. So today, Common Cause is launching a campaign to Recapture the Flag and unite us around the promise and hope of America.

Defenders of Wildlife: Neotropical Birds Need Your Help
The Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation provides vital conservation funding for cerulean warblers and other migratory songbirds. To date, the Act has supported vital conservation projects in 44 U.S. states and territories, 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries, and 12 Canadian provinces, benefitting roughly 3 million acres of migratory bird habitat. Fill out the form below to urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (H.R. 5756), which provides vital funding to protect some of the world’s most beloved — and imperiled — birds.

Environmental Defense Fund: Clean Up Shipping Pollution!
Cruise and cargo ships are a major source of toxic pollution in port and coastal communities across the U.S. The U.S. Government has proposed protective measures for international adoption that would reduce the the ships’ harmful pollution. However, the U.S. is lagging behind in ratifying the treaty that is the overall framework for these international discussions despite broad bipartisan support for action. Email your Senators today! Urge them to adopt H.R. 802 to protect air quality and the health of our communities.

Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): Exposed: Meat and Dairy Industries’ Third Round of Abuses to Cows
Our third investigation shows farm animals suffering at auctions and stockyards. Downed animals, those too ill or injured to walk, can suffer unaided for hours at all stages of the farm-to-slaughter process. Animals too frail to walk may be dragged to their death or left suffering for hours—and consumers could unknowingly consume the meat from sick and injured animals if these animals are slaughtered. The USDA must act today to stop this abuse.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Help Save Hundreds of Wild Horses at Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada
The wild horses and burros at the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Nevada are again in peril of being rounded up and removed! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is preparing a Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Sheldon Refuge which will set new policies for how they manage the wildlife on more than a half a million acres of high desert habitat. Please Take Action before the June 30 comment deadline to tell agency officials that the horses at Sheldon Refuge should remain wild.

Baked Tofu Recipes: Sweet Potato Medley & Cheesy Butternut Squash

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Normally I hate cooking, but I lurve to make dinner for my doggehs. They’re not exactly the fussiest of eaters, you see. (They eat poo, yo!) In addition to an enthusiastic audience, I also enjoy the chance to experiment and try out new concoctions without fear of wasting food.

Last Saturday, I came up with two yummy baked tofu recipes, made mostly with old cans of “stuff” that have been hanging out in my cabinets for years. (Literally. The Jellied Cranberry was Wegmans brand; Wegmans is a grocery chain in NY, and I moved to the Kansas City area in 2002. You do teh maths!)

2008-06-21 - Baked Tofu for Dogs - 0024

The dogs loved each recipe, and even I liked the Sweet Potato version. Alas, I used real cheese in the Cheesy Butternut Squash recipe, so I couldn’t try it out. Looked damn yummy though.

Suitable for peoples as well as their doggehs.

If you know of an animal shelter or rescue organization that has been affected by destructive weather throughout the Midwest, please contact NAVS or call 1-800-888-6287.

Thank you for helping the most innocent victims of these storms.
