Center for Biological Diversity: Save America’s Wildest National Forest
In a last-minute attack on one of America’s wildest and most ecologically valuable national forests, the Bush administration recently adopted a new management plan for the Tongass that leaves 2.3 million acres of pristine roadless areas open to logging, road building, and other development. If implemented, this plan will jeopardize many of the species the Center — and our e-activists — have worked to protect. This plan is only the last in a long series of attempts by the current administration to remove protection for the undeveloped roadless lands of the Tongass and across the country.
CREDO Action: Fix or ditch the global warming bill.
Senators who want real action on global warming should go on record with their votes on the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act. The bill as it currently stands is unacceptable unless amended to adopt the scientific standard of 80 percent reduction and strip massive handouts to polluters. Unless these faults can be fixed, senators serious about addressing climate change must reject this bill and focus on passing better legislation next year for a new president to sign.
Earth Day Network: Help our Nation’s K-12 Schools Go Green
It isn’t often that we have the opportunity to pass a truly great piece of legislation, but this week the House of Representatives will vote on a measure that will provide almost $7 billion in grants to help our nations’ K-12 schools go green. Called the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act (H.R. 3021), this bill, sponsored by Ben Chandler, will help schools to become more energy efficient and healthier.
Earthjustice: It’s Time for the Senate to Take Action on Global Warming
This week, the U.S. Senate is debating the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act. While far from being a complete solution, it’s a welcome sign that Congress is ready to take action. If strengthened, this bill has the potential to curb global warming and create a new clean energy economy for our future.
Ecological Internet / The Rainforest Network: Unilever Threatens Côte d’Ivoire’s Primary Rainforests, Showing Promises of “Sustainable” Palm Oil Meaningless
Leading global consumer products company poised to destroy Ivory Coast’s rainforests as both investor and customer, just after its commitment to rainforest protection and certified oil palm was much heralded by some.
Greenpeace: Take Action for More Marine Reserves
Take action >> We need more marine reserves in the ocean to restore biodiversity, help endangered species and provide a safe haven for marine life. And, we need to encourage President Bush to follow through and make this a reality!
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Urge your assemblymember to vote Yes for healthier, more efficient communities [California residents only]
Sprawling development trends will cause major increases in pollution from cars, which will overwhelm California’s landmark efforts to reduce global warming by providing cleaner cars and fuels. Tell your state assemblymember to vote Yes for a bill that would decrease pollution from driving.
Oil Change International: Follow the Oil Money
The next step to ending our collective addiction to oil is reducing oil’s influence over our Congress and demanding political independence from Big Oil. You can send the email below to your representative and senators at once, or personalize it by clicking here to find out how much your members of Congress are taking from the oil industry.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urgent: Allegedly Starving Horses in Knox County, Kentucky, Need Your Help!
Contacted by caring area residents desperate to get help for approximately 15 horses who are said to be starving, PETA sent several Knox County officials a memo asking them to intervene in behalf of these poor animals. Some of the horses are said to be so hungry that they are eating tree bark. Despite the reportedly desperate plight of the horses in question, our memo—as well as our follow-up calls and e-mails to the officials listed below—have gone unanswered.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urgent: Beaten Housecat Apparently Left in Custody of Teen Abuser!
PETA immediately contacted officials in Washington, North Carolina, after discovering graphic video footage of animal abuse on MySpace. This video depicts a teenage male holding a cat by the tail and repeatedly and forcefully beating the animal as he attempts to trim the cat’s fur. Throughout the horrifying attack, the cat’s terrified screams elicit laughter from onlookers in the room.
The Sierra Club: Tell Detroit to Speed Up
The biggest single step we can take to cut global warming pollution is to improve the fuel economy of our cars — and to do it on a much faster timeline than the Bush Administration wants.
Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): Urge Your Senators to Support Landmark Climate Bill
The Senate bill currently under consideration includes a strong framework for reducing the pollution that causes global warming. However, the bill needs improvements to ensure it will reduce our oil dependence, promote clean energy, and avoid the worst consequences of climate change. Please urge your senators to support amendments that strengthen the bill and oppose attempts to weaken it.
The Wilderness Society: Tell Congress to Strengthen and Pass Historic Climate Legislation
Congress is on the threshold of one of the great debates of our generation – a debate that will shape the world future generations will inherit. On June 2, the Senate begins a week-long debate on landmark climate legislation, called the Climate Security Act of 2007. This legislation holds real promise for significantly reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases while helping some of America’s most environmentally sensitive, much-loved public lands adapt to global warming.
