DawnWatch: May/June catch up — Oprah, Ellen, Access Hollywood, The Simpsons and more! 6/3/08
I have spent the last few days catching up on thousands of emails and news articles. In ways, I disappeared at the worst possible time — the animal coverage in the last month has been phenomenal.

Defenders of Wildlife: Changing Climate on Capitol Hill
Senate debate on the first truly comprehensive global warming bill — known as the Climate Security Act (S. 3036) — is underway. Lawmakers are poised to take an important step to protect polar bears and other wildlife threatened by global warming. But an amendment proposed by Senator Corker (R-TN) would eliminate the vitally important funding in the bill to help wildlife survive a changing climate. Urge your Senators to oppose the Corker amendment and strengthen and pass the Climate Security Act (S. 3036).

Environmental Defense: Help Pass a Climate Bill in 2008!
The Senate is debating the Climate Security Act right now. It is crucial that the bill gets passed this year! Each year we wait means extra effort in reducing emissions to avoid catastrophic global warming. Take action today and tell your Senators to vote for the Climate Security Act. [Note: the sample letter provided doesn't call for Senate to strengthen the bill, but pass it as-is.]

Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): Halt Wildlife Eradication Programs on National Refuges
Just recently, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Refuge Ecology Protection, Assistance, and Immediate Response (REPAIR) Act (H.R. 767) because it was promoted as an invasive plant eradication bill. In truth, the bill would allocate millions of dollars to fund expensive, unwarranted, and inhumane killing programs.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Biotech Company to Offer Dog Cloning at Auction
BioArts International, a California-based biotech firm, has announced it will hold a series of online auctions to offer five people the opportunity to have their dogs cloned, with bidding starting at $100,000. Cloning is a relatively new and flawed technology that carries with it a very low survival rate, as well as a host of other animal welfare problems, and the cloning industry currently operates with absolutely no regulatory oversight. Please Take Action to urge Congress to pass legislation to regulate the commercial companion animal cloning industry.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Encourage Nobel Foundation to offer a prize for developing alternatives to animal experimentation
World-renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall has proposed the creation of a new Nobel Prize category for scientists who advance medical knowledge through the development of working alternatives to animal experimentation. Please Take Action to encourage the Nobel Foundation to consider Dr. Goodall’s suggestion to create a prize for the development of alternatives to animal experimentation.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge Kalamazoo School to Cancel Students’ Attendance at a Cruel Bullfight
Hackett Catholic Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan is taking a school trip to Spain June 17th-30th with bullfighting on the itinerary. Please Take Action to ask school officials to remove animal cruelty from its agenda and replace it with a humane education program.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge the Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle City Council to stop the Zoo’s reckless elephant breeding pro
Last year, six-year-old Hansa succumbed to a gruesome elephant virus that primarily afflicts Asian elephants and is fatal in nearly all cases. Yet, full knowing there is a high risk that another elephant will contract and die from the deadly virus, Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle is actively attempting to artificially inseminate Hansa’s mother, Chai. Woodland Park Zoo’s own veterinarian has claimed there is a greater than 1 in 5 chance that another elephant at the Zoo will get the disease. Please Take Action on Friday, June 6th between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. PST to urge the Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle City Council to put the elephants’ welfare first and stop the Zoo’s elephant breeding program.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Urgent: Major Climate Change Vote in Senate
U.S. activists: Urge your senators to vote for the Climate Security Act, major legislation that would help slow climate change, and for a key amendment expected to be offered today (June 4).

Campaign Updates, Press Releases, etc.

Levees.org: America Needs the 8/29 Investigation
Please go to YouTube and watch our latest Public Service Announcement! If enough people watch the video, it will earn a place on the homepage of YouTube where it may be viewed by millions! The video shows why we all need the 8/29 Investigation – a truly independent and complete analysis of the Katrina levee failures on August 29, 2005.

Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Grassy Narrows Wins. For Real.
It was a regular day at RAN today, full of meetings and discussions with my ever so talented colleagues. Until about 3pm when David Sone, my fellow Old Growth campaigner, interrupted a meeting that I was in to tell me that AbitibiBowater had just announced that they will pull their logging operations out of Grassy Narrows Territory.
