Animal Welfare Institute (AWI): URGENT: Please Ask Your Representative and Senators to Support the 2008 Whaling Resolution
On May 14, 2008, House Natural Resources Committee Chair Nick Rahall (D-WV) and eight of his colleagues introduced a whaling resolution in the House of Representatives. H. Con. Res. 350 proclaims that the United States should use all appropriate measures to uphold the moratorium on commercial whaling – such as ending special permit and continued commercial whaling, closing loopholes that have allowed tens of thousands of whales to be killed in the past two decades, and opposing the creation of any new categories of whaling.

Campaign for America’s Wilderness: Urge your representative to support pending wilderness bills
Although the recent designation of the Wild Sky Wilderness was a great success, being the first new wilderness since 2006, we hope it will usher in a wave of further victories. Several bills pending in the House represent particularly strong opportunities to expand our nation’s wilderness legacy for future generations. Tell your representative to support wilderness legislation pending in the House.

Greenpeace: Congress must lead on global warming legislation
The Climate Security Act (S. 3036) was too weak to effectively combat global warming, but it was still disappointing to watch as the debate over the bill devolved into a carnival of procedural tricks. We must now look to the House for leadership on strong global warming legislation. Take action now to tell your Member of Congress that we expect a serious debate that will result in the strongest possible science-based global warming legislation.

National Wildlife Federation (NWF): Hold Your Senators Accountable
On June 6, the Climate Security Act fell short of the votes needed to keep it alive in the U.S. Senate, pushing debate on climate action to next year for a new Congress and president. The Climate Security Act was poised to make great strides in addressing the threat of global warming and helping to protect wildlife and America’s natural resources.

Oceana: Tell the UN to officially declare June 8 as “World Ocean Day!”
World Ocean Day was created in 1992 at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, put on by the United Nations. Ever since, thousands have celebrated the oceans’ importance and their personal connections with them. But unfortunately, for the past 16 years this honorary day has remained an unofficial celebration because the UN has failed to formally designate June 8 as World Ocean Day every year.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Kentucky’s Commonwealth Attorney Shirks Responsibility
PETA called on Kentucky’s Commonwealth Attorney to investigate criminal charges under the state’s cruelty-to-animals statute, which prohibits “cruel or injurious mistreatment” of animals, but Dave Stengel denied jurisdiction. Please contact Gov. Steve Beshear to remind him that the commonwealth attorney does have jurisdiction, and urge him to support cruelty investigations.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Is Georgia District Attorney Ignoring Cruelty at Tyson Slaughterhouse?
In January 2008, PETA filed a formal complaint with Forsyth County, Georgia, District Attorney Penny Penn calling for vigorous prosecution of the perpetrators and the company for cruelty to animals. Nearly five months later, Penn has yet to reply to numerous attempts by PETA and others to discuss the evidence and what her office has done or intends to do.

The Wilderness Society: Climate Legislation Needed
The Senate debate over one of the most comprehensive plans to tackle global climate change ended up in a partisan stall. This was the first major attempt by the Congress to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions—and it won’t be the last. This debate is an important glimpse into the politics of climate change legislation, and how steep a hill we have to climb this year and next to adopt real solutions. Some in the House think that the temporary success of the Senate obstructionists mean that the issue can be ignored for the rest of the year. Now is the time to remind them that the Laws of Nature have not been repealed. Help keep the pressure on Congress.
