Corporate Accountability International: Contact your Mayor, Ask him/her to support Resolution 70
This month mayors from across the country joined together to spearhead a resolution calling for a phase out of bottled water in city hall. The American Beverage Association, the trade group representing Coke, Nestlé and Pepsi, hired a team of lobbyists to oppose the resolution, concerned that it might further tarnish the industry’s image. Ask your mayor to support city water and vote for Resolution No. 70.

CREDO Action: Save the Internet — Support Net Neutrality
What good is free speech if powerful corporations have the ability to shut off or slow down viewpoints they find objectionable? The bipartisan Internet Freedom Preservation Act (HR 5353), co-sponsored by Representatives Ed Markey (D-MA) and Chip Pickering (R-MS), was introduced into Congress on February 13th and represents a vital step in ensuring the Internet remains a level playing field for consumers and innovators.

DawnWatch: CBC airs shocking horse slaughter segment — June 10, 2008
Last night, June 10, the Canadian show “The National” did an extraordinary twenty minute piece on horse slaughter. It explained that while the US has a temporary ban on horse slaughter, US horses are being trucked to any of seven slaughterhouses in Canada to be killed, and that the horse slaughter business in Canada has grown 75 percent as a result.

DawnWatch: Vegan diet on CNN (Russell Simmons) and front page of Cleveland Plain Dealer 6/10/08
It is a good media day for the vegan diet. Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons is singing its praises on CNN, and a leading heart surgeon is expousing it on the front page of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF): Tell Congress “No Deal on Telecom Immunity!”
High-ranking members of Congress are hoping that a “compromise” FISA bill can be rushed through both the House and the Senate as early as next week. Tell Congress that we won’t accept false compromises on immunity for lawbreaking telecoms!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Levi’s to Stop Orangutan Abuse!
After PETA learned about Levi Strauss & Co.’s “viral video” featuring an orangutan, we immediately contacted the company to request that it pull the video and pledge never to use great apes in advertisements again. Levi’s has denied both those requests, and the company has refused even to meet with PETA to cooperatively discuss the issue.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): New Hampshire Grocery Store Is Shrink-Wrapping Live Lobsters!
When PETA caseworkers received a call from a concerned patron claiming that live lobsters were being shrink-wrapped and put on sale at the Lebanon Village Marketplace in Lebanon, New Hampshire, we could hardly believe our ears. The caller claims that the lobsters were wrapped up just like slabs of animal flesh—except that these lobsters were still alive and moving inside their packages! Just to be sure, PETA had several activists lawfully visit Lebanon Village Market Place on the evening of June 10, 2008, and they all confirmed that the lobsters were still alive, although most were dying.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Montauk, NY, to End the Star Island Shark Tournament
Every year, Montauk, New York, allows the barbaric slaughter of blue, mako, and thresher sharks at the Star Island Yacht Club’s shark-hunting tournament. These intelligent, graceful fish have complex and integrated sensory systems, can learn and remember, and display curiosity and sophisticated social behaviors. During shark tournaments, sharks are speared, hooked, suffocated, and strung up by their tails to be gawked at before they are cut open and dismembered.

The Pew Environment Group: NEPA proposed rule
Our oceans are in trouble. Fish stocks are being overfished to the point of collapse, runoff pollution is creating vast dead zones, and global warming is causing the death of corals. Now the Bush Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has proposed a rule that would gut the environmental review process for fishery management actions and limit the public’s right to participate in those decisions. Tell the NMFS to go back to the drawing board! Our oceans deserve better.

The Pew Environment Group: Tell NMFS: End Overfishing to Save Sharks and Shellfish
The dusky shark is just one of 48 federally-managed fish stocks that were damaged by overfishing in 2006. Reckless overfishing continues to put our fish, shellfish, birds, marine mammals, and all of ocean life at jeopardy. The National Marine Fisheries Service is taking public comments as it revises its rules for overfishing and environmental review.
