American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Tell Congress to Reject a Sham Spying “Compromise”
A sham spying “compromise” could be rammed through both the Senate and House this week. It’s moving that fast. If we don’t stop this, telecom companies that broke the law by supplying mountains of personal information to the government without a warrant will be let off the hook.

The Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC): people’s campaign for the constitution pledge
Support the goal of the People’s Campaign for the Constitution: To restore constitutional rights, checks and balances, and the rule of law, which have been violated under the guise of a permanent “War on Terror.” I pledge to join with others to hold elected representatives and candidates for public office to the oaths they have made or must make: to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution.

Center for Biological Diversity: Protect Polar Bear Habitat, Take Action Now
Support the “Polar Bear Seas Protection Act” and ensure that polar bears get the protection they need to survive. We can’t afford to leave polar bears unprotected against the ongoing threats of global warming and continued development in the Arctic. The Arctic sea ice is rapidly diminishing and scientists predict that the habitat crucial to the bears’ survival may be gone by mid-century. We must act now.

Common Cause: No Deal on Telecom Immunity
Congress is wheeling and dealing this week with the White House over whether to give a “get-out-of-jail-free” card to telecom companies that helped eavesdrop on Americans without legally-required warrants. Just a few weeks ago, the House stood strong and refused to give immunity to the phone companies that engaged in illegal wiretapping. But now, Congress is considering a “compromise” bill that could make it impossible for us to find out the details of the domestic spying program and hold accountable anyone who broke the law.

Greenpeace: Just Say NO to Offshore Drilling
McCain, Bush, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are pushing hard to open our national coastlines to oil drilling. In fact, Newt Gingrich has put together a petition like this that more than 750,000 people have signed! They’re using high gas prices and economic concerns to help their friends in the oil industry make even more money.

Greenpeace: Tell Supermarkets, No More Fishy Business!
You can help save the oceans every time you go grocery shopping. Consumers buy half their seafood at supermarkets, yet most supermarkets don’t consider where the seafood they sell comes from or how it was caught. Destructive fishing practices and overfishing are two of the gravest threats facing our oceans, and experts predict if current trends continue, global fisheries will collapse in 40 years.

Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): Urge your Congressperson to Keep Wildlife Safe in our National Parks
U.S. Representative Betty Sutton is circulating a sign-on letter for her congressional colleagues to join to voice their opposition to the proposal to allow loaded guns in national parks. We need you to urge your Representative to join on this group letter.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Iowa Floodwaters Threaten Animals; Volunteers needed to assist with statewide animal companion rescue efforts
You can assist with the rescue efforts by volunteering for the Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid Network. Click here to learn more about what duties volunteers are needed for and to sign up. Also contact the Kinship Circle if you or a loved one live in Iowa, and need resources for ensuring your animal companion’s safety because of the disaster.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge congressional leaders to put the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act up for a vote
Even though Congress has passed a temporary ban on horse slaughter in the U.S. and the country’s last horse slaughterhouses have been shut down, thousands of horses are still sent to Mexico and Canada every year to be killed for meat. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) can end the export of American horses for slaughter.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge your legislators to co-sponsor the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge Denver Coliseum to cancel Circus Vazquez
Circus Vasquez is coming to the Denver Coliseum June 18-26, 2008. This circus has a terrible record of animal handling and care, and has been cited numerous times by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture for failing to provide adequate space to tigers and for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. Please Take Action to tell the Executive Director of the Denver Coliseum that a circus act with a documented history of animal abuse has no place in the city of Denver.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge CITES to prevent capture and captivity of wild dolphins
Trafficking in live dolphins is on the upsurge worldwide, as dolphins are captured from the wild and put in popular “swim-with-dolphins” tanks in hotels and in aquariums. Many of these dolphins are taken in horrific drive fisheries in which only a few “show dolphins” are spared, but these few dolphins kept alive will be sold into a form of slavery, bringing the hunters thousands of dollars more than the butchered dolphin meat, helping to subsidize the inhumane drive hunts. Please Take Action to urge CITES to stop the trafficking of live dolphins.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Action Alert: Hundreds of wild horses at Sheldon Refuge desperately need your voice now!
The wild horses and burros at the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge are again in peril of being rounded up and removed! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is preparing a Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) for the Sheldon Refuge which will set new policies for how they manage the wildlife on more than a half a million acres of high desert habitat in northwestern Nevada.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Help Ban Rodeos and Other Cruel Animal Acts in Putnam County [New York]
Putnam County legislators are now considering a proposal to ban wild west-type shows featuring activities that are inherently cruel to animals. The ban would cover rodeos, circuses and wild animal carnivals.

Ocean Conservancy: Tell President Bush No to drilling for oil in our Ocean
We urgently need you today to make your voice heard: Tell President Bush how dangerous and short-sighted his plan is to start drilling in the ocean by lifting a 27 year ban. Our ocean drives the planet’s climate and is the first victim of global climate change — more drilling only guarantees its further destruction while doing nothing to solve our energy crisis.

Oceana: Protect Krill – the Heart of the Pacific Food Web!
Krill may not be the most famous marine creatures, but they are among the most important. Krill and other forage species like herring and sardines form the very foundation of the Pacific food web, and everything from blue whales to pink salmon and beyond needs enough krill to eat. [Tiny Violin Alert (tm) - Be sure to edit out all the pro-fisheries language should you choose to use Oceana's sample letter!]

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell eBay to Stop Allowing the Sale of Dog Fur, Live Dogs and Cats, in China
Please join PETA in asking eBay—the world’s largest online marketplace—to prohibit the cruel sale of cats and dogs—as well as items lined with dog fur, which are illegal in the U.S.—on its Chinese Web site.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Virginia Salon’s Medieval Beauty Gimmick Reportedly Kills 7,000 Fish
Yvonne Hair and Nails Salon in Alexandria, Virginia, is dumping thousands of tiny fish in a tub resembling a kiddy pool—which is filled with water heated to 94°F—for a bizarre skin treatment called the “Doctor Fish” massage. Clients are instructed to dangle their feet in the tub so that these little animals can munch away the dead skin…7,000 of these helpless animals were reportedly cooked to death recently after an Yvonne Salon staff member left the heat on in the animals’ tub.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Jurisdictional Squabbling Leaves Sick Kittens to Suffer at Alabama Pet Store
A number of Alabama residents have told PETA about the plight of several kittens at Wags to Riches pet store in Hoover, Alabama. Our callers claim that the kittens there are suffering from upper respiratory infections, and photos provided to our office appear to confirm these claims.

PETA2: Street Sweeper Kills Dog
Please write to Department of Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty through this online form kindly demanding that the Department of Sanitation’s operators drive more carefully. We need to ensure that a tragedy like this doesn’t happen again.

Sierra Club: Consumer-First Energy Act
There’s no denying that America faces an urgent energy challenge. We can continue to pursue expensive and unsustainable energy practices and policies that have left us addicted to oil — like drilling off our coasts or in America’s Arctic. Or we can make the changes and take the actions that will put us on the path to a smarter, cheaper and cleaner energy future.

Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): Urge Your Representative to Support Strong Climate Legislation
With your help, momentum is growing in Congress for strong national global warming legislation—just this month, the Senate had their first vote on major climate legislation. Now we need to turn to the House and educate lawmakers about key issues they must address in any final climate policy. Please urge your representative to commit to getting the details right by signing a climate principles letter, which will be sent to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
