Animals Australia: Help End Jumps Racing in Victoria
In jumps racing, horses are forced to jump a series of metre-high fences at fast speeds. This type of racing is 10 to 20 times more dangerous for horses than flat racing, and many of the injuries sustained during jumps races can be horrific. Victoria’s Racing Minister Rob Hulls announced last week that the government will be conducting a review of jumps racing after this season has finished. But that’s not soon enough. Now is our best chance of getting jumps racing banned.

Care: Tell Congress that More Must Be Done about Hunger!
Haiti … Somalia … Bangladesh … Afghanistan. Soaring prices and food shortages have resulted in deadly riots — and forced families to go hungry. As usual, women and children are the most vulnerable. [Include a note about promoting and supporting vegan and vegetarian diets.]

DawnWatch: Last minute Primetime Jungle Friends tip — Tuesday, July 1, 2008
Jungle Friends, besides doing beautiful work and attracting great media, have also sent out a terrific alert about that media, and have even included that vital information about getting in touch with ABC to send thanks for the coverage. Please do! Positive feedback for animal friendly coverage encourages more of it. Here is the Jungle Friends alert about the segment airing tonight, Tuesday July 1, on ABC’s Primetime at 10pm.

Ecological Internet / The Rainforest Portal: Brazil’s Xingu River Dam to Damn Amazonian Rainforests and Peoples
The Brazilian government is planning to build what would be the world´s third largest dam on the Xingu River in the Brazilian Amazon. The Xingu River in northeast Brazil is a tributary of the Amazon River. The Belo Monte Dam, meant principally to fuel the expansion of aluminum foundries and other industrial plants in the Amazon, would require diverting nearly the entire flow of the Xingu, drying up the “Big Bend” of the Xingu and its tributary, the Bacajá, home to hundreds of indigenous people. Native people upstream would also be affected by the dam´s impacts on fish stocks, their principal food source.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Dogs From Shelter Dumped In National Forest
Mayor James Valley of Helena-West Helena in Arkansas, has drawn serious fire from animal advocates for deliberately dumping 10 dogs from a municipal shelter in a national forest. The Humane Society of Southeastern Arkansas has brought charges of animal abandonment, mistreatment and neglect – all misdemeanors – against the Mayor. Circuit Judge David Henry issued an arrest warrant in response to the charges last week.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Ask SF Board of Supervisors to Support Zoo Reform
San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly has introduced an ordinance to turn the San Francisco Zoo into the nation’s first major rescue zoo that prioritizes animal welfare and offers a refuge to exotic and other animals in need. The proposed ordinance reflects the recommendations of the city’s Animal Control and Advisory Commission, which evaluated the zoo’s animal welfare record and identified serious deficiencies.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Tell Dallas Zoo: Send Surviving Elephant to a U.S. Sanctuary, Not Mexico
The Dallas Zoo recently announced its decision to send Jenny, the sole remaining elephant at the zoo, to the Africam Safari Park in Puebla, Mexico instead of the nearby Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee which offers hundreds of acres of naturalistic habitat and the highest quality care. Please Take Action to urge Dallas City Council to override the zoo’s decision to send Jenny to the Africam Safari Park and instead transfer her to The Elephant Sanctuary.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Tell Congress You Don’t Buy the Lie!
President Bush and Big Oil’s allies in Congress are trying to persuade the public that opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and America’s coastlines to oil drilling will lower gas prices. That’s a lie! This land grab will boost profits for the oil giants and despoil our natural heritage, but it will do nothing to ease our pain at the pump.

Pacific Environment: Save Lake Baikal!
For over 50 years, the Baikalsk Pulp and Paper Mill has been dumping chlorine and dioxin byproducts into Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal holds 20% of the world’s fresh water and is home to unique and fragile biodiversity. Join Pacific Environment and Baikal Environmental Wave in Irkutsk, Russia, in our efforts to close the mill!

Public Citizen: Have You Driven a Ford Lately?
Sign our petition to Ford CEO Alan Mulally, Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters and your Senators to demand more fuel-efficient vehicles. We will deliver the petition when we have 2,500 signatures, so please insure that we will have enough signatures by forwarding this message to your friends and family.

The Sierra Club: Urge Congress to Fight Global Warming
Our champions for action on global warming in Congress need your help to build support for a sound global warming policy that invests in clean energy and creates new economic opportunity here at home. Representatives Waxman, Markey, and Inslee are asking their fellow members of Congress to endorse principles calling for strong, fair legislation that will do what scientists tell us is necessary to fight global warming.
