DawnWatch: ABC San Fran — cruelty-free products discussed by Karen Dawn 7/1/08
On Tuesday, July 1, the San Francisco ABC talk show “View from the Bay” did a segment on cruelty free products. I was featured talking about soy milk, Earth Balance, Vegenaise and cosmetics not tested on animals, which one can buy at Whole Foods.

Democracy for America (DFA): Sign the Senate Petition to Stop Telecom Immunity
Senator Feingold needs our help to stop the FISA “compromise” bill. Russ sent me this message to pass on to you directly. Please read it and then sign our Senate Petition to Stop Telecom Immunity. We will deliver the petitions to every Senator on Tuesday morning, right before the expected vote.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF): Tell Your Senators: “Don’t Shred the Constitution this July 4th — Reject Telecom Immunity!”
After the Fourth of July holiday, the Senate will vote on the FISA Amendments Act (FAA), a bill that would betray the spirit of 1776 by radically expanding the president’s spying powers and granting immunity to the companies that colluded in his illegal program. Now that the House has passed the FAA, the Senate is the last front left in the battle against immunity, and every vote — from cloture, to the amendments, to final passage — counts.

The National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS): Federal: Bill Would Liberate Great Apes from Laboratory Cages
The Great Ape Protection Act, HR 5852, would prohibit invasive research on great apes, including chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons. It would furthermore prohibit the use of federal funds to conduct invasive research on a great ape, the breeding of great apes for the purpose of use in research, and the transport of a great ape for the purpose of conducting invasive experiments.

National Wildlife Federation (NWF): Ask Congress to Reduce Future Flood Harm
People in the Central United States are not imagining things. The last few decades have brought more heavy summer rainfall events. And while no single storm or flood can be attributed directly to global warming, warmer air can hold more moisture bringing more and heavier precipitation in the years to come. Furthermore, the losses from major floods have been compounded by over-reliance on levees and other strategies for taming rivers that continue to encourage development in flood-prone areas.

Oceana: Protect Sharks
Every year, fishermen around the world pull tens of millions of sharks on deck and crudely slice off their fins. They throw the sharks overboard, now finless, to sink to the ocean floor where they drown or bleed to death. The House of Representatives is voting on the Shark Conservation Act of 2008, which includes an amendment that would require sharks to be landed with their fins attached in all U.S. waters. Sharks are in grave danger worldwide, so please tell your Representative to vote yes on the Shark Conservation Act of 2008.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Arizona Condo Manager to Stop Poisoning Birds
PETA caseworkers recently contacted Susan Meyer—the manager of Biltmore Square Condominiums in Phoenix, Arizona—after residents informed PETA that “poisoned corn,” which is actually a substance called Avitrol, is being used to kill unwanted pigeons. Meyer asked us to speak instead with the company hired to conduct Biltmore Square’s pigeon-control program. This company confirmed that Avitrol is being used at Biltmore Square because trapping and deterrent methods did not control the pigeon population well enough.

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA): Please Sign the Climate Principles Letter
PDA has endorsed a science-based global warming bill now in the House of Representatives, The Safe Climate Act (H.R. 1590, Henry Waxman, D-CA-30). Now three House leaders, including Rep. Waxman, are circulating a climate principles letter among their colleagues which clearly defines the goals and elements a final law must contain to be successful. Speaker Pelosi supports the letter, and a large number of signatures from House members will help her to press for the best possible global warming bill.

Save Our Environment.org: Tell Congress to Resist Calls for Drilling
Anti-environmentalists in Congress are adding amendments to every bill they can get their hands on, calling for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, many offshore areas, and other sensitive regions—even to bills that aren’t remotely related to energy! Drilling is NOT the answer to our energy crisis. Tell your members of Congress that we must pursue clean, renewable energy alternatives. Drilling in the Arctic and off our beaches will only perpetuate our dependence on dirty fossil fuels and slow progress towards a clean energy future.

World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA): Tell Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart to offer more humane food choices.
Do you want to know how well your favorite grocery stores stack up when it comes to offering animal friendly foods on their shelves? WSPA surveyed about 200 individual stores throughout the US and recorded the availability of humanely labeled dairy, eggs, meat and poultry products. The results were used to rank the 23 largest US grocery corporations according to both the quantity and quality of their humane food selection. Both Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart ranked far lower than their chief competitors and we need your help in urging them to offer more humane food choices in their stores.

Our signature ad, “A Declaration for Our Times,” is in today’s New York Times on page A-17.

Stop White Coat Welfare – www.whitecoatwelfare.org
At a time when people are suffering and dying because of budget cuts to healthcare, education, and social services, it is imperative that we look at how our money is being spent. Despite the alleged shortage of funds to subsidize healthcare and other life saving social services, every year we waste billions of dollars nationally on animal research that is not helping people. Animal experimenters are receiving more and more white coat welfare without having to produce useful results and justify the cost.
