DawnWatch: Dallas’s lone elephant needs our help — 7/5/08
The urgent plight of Jenny, the lone elephant at the Dallas zoo, has been in the news this last week. Jenny has had a rough life, including years of solitary confinement. Her plight improved somewhat an elephant named Keke came to live with her, but Keke died over a month ago. The good news is that rather than replace Keke, the Dallas Zoo has decided to close its elephant exhibit.

Defenders of Wildlife: Take Action for Real Solutions
Please join thousands of other sensible people from across the country today, as we call on Congress to declare INDEPENDENCE FROM BIG OIL. Contact your Representative and Senators using the information below.

Earthjustice: Protect our oceans and fisheries
Fisheries are collapsing, runoff pollution is creating vast dead zones, and global warming is causing the death of corals. Yet NMFS, the very federal agency charged with managing and protecting our oceans, is proposing a new approach to fisheries management that would allow increased depletion of ocean resources without adequate analysis of the consequences.

Forest Ethics: Take Action – Join the Do Not Mail campaign
Junk Mail does more than waste our time and invade our privacy; it also contributes to global warming and causes the destruction of Endangered Forests. With your help, we can take back our mailboxes. Sign up to spread the word about our petition, educate your friends and neighbors about the environmental impacts of junk mail, lobby your state representatives for a Do Not Mail Registry, or pressure the biggest corporate junk mailers to stop destroying the climate and Endangered Forests.

International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW): Urge your member of Congress to cosponsor the Bear Protection Act H.R. 5534
Please contact your member of Congress and urge him or her to cosponsor the Bear Protection Act H.R. 5534, a bill that would help create a national prohibition on trade in bear parts.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Arden Group to Stop Selling Foie Gras
Despite repeated behind-the-scenes attempts to urge Arden Group—which owns the Mayfair Market and Gelson’s—to stop selling foie gras, the company continues to sell this cruel product. Foie gras is made by force-feeding ducks and geese such enormous amounts of grain and fat that their livers become diseased and painfully engorged.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Endangered Green Turtles Exploited and Cruelly Confined on Grand Cayman Turtle Farm
Angry tourists who visited the Cayman Turtle Farm on Grand Cayman Island have contacted PETA for years about the conditions in which the green turtles who are raised at the facility are forced to exist. One visitor said, “The poor turtles are kept in very small, crowded, filthy, smelly tanks. They are so crowded in that they can not swim without running into each other and many have sores on their necks from being scratched by the others. The conditions were so terrible that I cried when I left.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Carriacou Island Officials to Stop Sea Turtle Torture!
Horrified visitors to the Island of Carriacou—off the coast of Grenada in the Caribbean—contacted PETA after witnessing the horrific manner in which locals torture sea turtles to death. Witnesses report seeing these beautiful animals pulled from their ocean home, flipped over onto their backs on dry land, and left to bake to death in the hot sun. A heartbreaking video provided by tourists shows a group of overturned and helpless turtles that flail their flippers in a futile attempt to save themselves.

Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Take action on August 13 with our Stickering Day of Action!
On August 13, put pressure on companies that sell products containing rainforest destruction in the form of palm oil, and get them to join us in putting pressure on agribusiness giants ADM, Bunge and Cargill, the ABCs of rainforest destruction. Fill out the form on the right to get your action toolkit, complete with “Warning: Product May Contain Rainforest Destruction” stickers.

The Sierra Club: Protect Our Coasts and Arctic Refuge from Drilling
This week, concerned citizens across the country will welcome Congress back from its July Fourth recess with calls urging their Representatives not to open the America’s special places to drilling, places like our beaches and the Arctic Refuge. The government’s own research shows that more drilling will do nothing to ease pain at the pump for hardworking Americans — it will only help Big Oil break more profit records.

The Sierra Club: Save America’s Rainforest
The Tongass is by far our country’s largest and wildest national forest. Comprising misty fjords and old-growth stands pre-dating Columbus’ journey to America, the Tongass is rightly considered the crown jewel of the national forest system. Unfortunately, the health of the Tongass is being threatened by a Bush administration proposal that would offer millions of acres of roadless areas and prime habitat to the timber industry.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Save the Polar Bear Seas
U.S. activists: Urge your representative to cosponsor the Polar Bear Seas Protection Act, which would halt oil and gas leases in the polar bear’s habitat until scientists can fully assess the environmental impacts.
