Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF): High School Curriculum to Include Chicken Slaughter?
(Ontario County, NY) Due to vocal supporters of the high school’s previously banned hands-on chicken slaughter project, the Canadaigua Academy is now considering reversing its earlier decision to eliminate the project. The project, which had been part of the school’s curriculum for the last 3 years, was canceled earlier this spring following a public outpouring of objections. The ecology class project had students raising chicks in pens and ultimately slaughtering, plucking, gutting, and barbecuing them. While the supervising teacher argued that the class serves to “educate people to the true cost of today’s diet,” the inherent violence of the meat industry does not justify its reenactment in our classrooms.
Earthjustice: Tell Congress to Pass the Clean Water Protection Act!
It’s time for Congress to stand up for what’s right and put a stop to the devastation of our rivers, streams and headwaters. Sign this petition to support the Clean Water Protection Act, which would protect our waters from being filled with millions of tons of waste from mountaintop removal mining.
Pacific Environment: Be Part of Today’s National Day of Action for the Arctic!
Today, concerned citizens across the country will call their Representatives urging them protect the Arctic’s offshore waters and other special places from drilling. Together, we will inundate offices with calls and emails to demand that Congress stand up to Big Oil and protect these areas for future generations. As calls and emails flood these offices, staff people from environmental and community organizations will head up to Capitol Hill to meet with key members of Congress.
PETA2: Save Hot Dogs!
Every year, countless dogs die from being overheated inside locked cars. On a 78-degree day, the inside of a car can reach 160 degrees in just minutes. That’s faster than you can run inside the store, buy yourself a cold drink, and run out. Dogs stuck in hot cars can suffer from brain damage or heatstroke or can even die. This is why we need your help with this mission—are you ready for it?
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Ask the Military to End Live Animal Use in Medical Student Courses
We need your help to end the use of live animals for medical student training at U.S. military facilities. Live animals are used and killed in medical student courses at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Md., and Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Campaign Updates
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Senate Passes Unconstitutional Spying Bill And Grants Sweeping Immunity To Phone Companies
Today, in a blatant assault upon civil liberties and the right to privacy, the Senate passed an unconstitutional domestic spying bill that violates the Fourth Amendment and eliminates any meaningful role for judicial oversight of government surveillance. The FISA Amendments Act of 2008 was approved by a vote of 69 to 28 and is expected to be signed into law by President Bush shortly. This bill essentially legalizes the president’s unlawful warrantless wiretapping program revealed in December 2005 by the New York Times.
Dogs Deserve Better (DDB): Chain Off 2008 • Unchain our World! - Freedom for Chained Dogs the World Over - Wrap-up of the 2008 Campaign
Updates are pouring in, and we are working all week to get them up, along with photos and articles from our participates. In the meantime, please watch our video from Chicago’s Main Event, and read the poem, written by chainee Gordon Bakalar, which had Tammy crying as she read it in the Chain Off Opening Ceremonies.
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF): Senate Joins House in Caving to White House Immunity Demands
Telecoms Let Off the Hook for Illegal Spying - For Now; The U.S. Senate this afternoon passed the FISA Amendments Act, broadly expanding the president’s warrantless surveillance authority and unconstitutionally granting retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that participated in the president’s illegal domestic wiretapping program. The House of Representatives passed the same bill last month, and President Bush is expected to sign the legislation into law shortly.
Contests
National Wildlife Federation (NWF): 2008 Contest: Write it! Wear it! Snap it! Boast it!
We need your help in coming up with a slogan for NWF’s campaign to protect our country’s public lands. We’re looking for a simple slogan that expresses the importance of public lands and inspires others to visit or help protect public lands. The winning idea could be featured on a T-shirt, displayed in a magazine advertisement and headline.
