American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Congress & President Bush are giving away your rights!
Moments after President Bush signed the bill into law, the ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the unconstitutional FISA Amendments Act. Help us demonstrate to our leaders that we believe in freedom — not fear. We ran a full-page ad in The New York Times on July 17 that carries that simple message.
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): The Terrorist Watchlist is Out of Control
In September 2007, the Inspector General of the Justice Department reported that the Terrorist Screening Center (the FBI-administered organization that consolidates terrorist watch list information in the United States) had over 700,000 names in its database as of April 2007 - and that the list was growing by an average of over 20,000 records per month. Tell Congress: Small, focused watchlists are better for civil liberties and for security.
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Watchlist Complaint Form: Tell Your Story
If you believe you have been harmed due to a U.S. government watch list, while flying or anywhere else, use this form to share your story. The information you provide in this questionnaire will be kept confidential and only shared with ACLU staff, unless you specify in question 3 how we may share it with others.
Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): Help Support The Great Ape Protection Act
The Great Ape Protection Act (H.R. 5852) has been introduced to end invasive research on the 1200 chimpanzees remaining in laboratories, retire the approximately 600 federally-owned chimpanzees to permanent sanctuary, and make the recent decision by the National Center for Research Resources—part of NIH—to stop funding the breeding of federally-owned chimpanzees statutory.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Officials to Clean Up Horrific Conditions at ShanChong Animal Shelter
For several years, PETA Asia-Pacific has been monitoring the government-run ShanChong animal shelter outside Taipei and trying to work with government officials to improve the horrible conditions at the facility. But instead of improving, conditions have continued to deteriorate.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): URGENT: U.S. Army Shooting Live Pigs in Trauma Training on July 18
PETA has received shocking information from a whistleblower in the U.S. military, who says that the Army is planning to shoot live pigs with M16A2 and M4 rifles at the U.S. Army Garrison at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii on July 18. The Army’s stated purpose of this training exercise is to teach combat medics how to manage traumatic battlefield wounds and injuries—even though more effective non-animal simulators are readily available.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Glynda’s Goodys to Stop Using Rabbit Fur
When concerned customers contacted PETA about Glynda’s Goodys, an online store that sells animal figurines made of real rabbit fur, we repeatedly contacted the owner to explain that rabbits on fur farms suffer miserable lives and horrific deaths. Rabbits are often killed by having their necks broken or their skulls smashed before they are strung up by their hind legs and have their throats slit. Many rabbits are still alive and struggling desperately when they are hung up to be skinned. Despite this, Glynda’s Goodys continues to sell fur.
Progressive Democrats of America (PDA): Please Sign the Climate Principles Letter
After eight long years of denial and avoidance in dealing with climate change, Congress has no time to waste in passing meaningful legislation that will finally begin to address the most serious issue facing the human race—global warming and climate change. Bi-partisan support for the Climate Principles letter will help to ensure that legislation is guided by best practices rather than campaign donations from industry’s worst offenders. Please ask your member of Congress to sign onto the Climate Principles letter, which describes the basic principles that should be addressed in Global Warming legislation.
Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Adopt a Coal Financier Near You
Want to do something locally about global warming? Starting today, you can take the next step beyond just changing light bulbs. You can help shift global investment away from coal, the single biggest source of global warming, and toward a clean energy future by “adopting” a local Citi or Bank of America branch in your area! You can sign up online and download our complete Adopt-a-Branch toolkit that has everything you need to get started.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Save the Polar Bear Seas
U.S. activists: Urge your representative to cosponsor the Polar Bear Seas Protection Act, which would halt oil and gas leases in the polar bear’s habitat until scientists can fully assess the environmental impacts.
Campaign Updates
Friends of Animals (FoA): Judge Rules Gray Wolves Be Returned to Federal Protection
A federal judge in Montana has ruled that gray wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming be returned to federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.
